1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Your preferred collection: Few dolls/lots of stuff, or many dolls/few things for them

Jan 24, 2015

    1. Almost every one of us have limited doll funds and we all have to decide on how to best use them to maximum our enjoyments in this hobby and to build up our collections.

So, would you prefer to have very few dolls but with lots of stuff for them (wigs, eyes, clothes, etc) or would you prefer to spend your funds on more dolls and not so much on their stuff? Did your plans and preferences change as time goes on?

I'm fairly new to this and I'm just wondering how others in this hobby build and enjoy their collections :)

    2. I do plan how that works, I have doll wish list, After buying two I work on finishing them, like buying the right eyes, wigs and sew their clothes, then I buy another two and work on them and so on, but after a while I find my self want to change things at my completed dolls so sometimes I get distracted specially if one of my wish list dolls appears at the market place as I really hate waiting for it to be one by the company

    3. I try to make sure that each doll is "finished" before I buy another, and I don't go looking at new dolls unless someone points me to one in my aesthetic range. I'm comfortable with my collection's size, but I feel that it was easier to sew for them when I only had two. My collection has grown sometimes slowly, sometimes more quickly, over almost 10 years so it's been gradual, and I have amassed clothing, shoes, furniture, and accessories as I find them. That's the fun part for me.

Some day I hope to be able to dedicate a portion of my bedroom or study to built in SD/MSD scaled Doll House. I have more props in MSD size since they are easier to find, but I would like a livingroom and bedroom in SD scale, even if everything else is scaled smaller.

More on topic, my preference is to focus on one doll at a time, and get the right eyes, wigs, clothes, shoes, etc sorted for them before I even think about bringing another doll home. Sometimes dolls happen though (event heads anyone?) and those I have tucked away in a box until I decide what to do with them (either sell them, or find bodies etc).

    4. Although I haven't received my first BJD yet, I plan to (hopefully) get him finished first before thinking of getting another. But I know that won't happen! There's so many lovely sculpts and I'm kind of impatient :XD:

    5. I've only had bjd for a couple of years - I had lots of money initially so bought lots of dolls, clothes and wigs - spoilt brat ^_^

but I found it overwhelming to have a sea of faces - so I started selling them (the big cull!) If I don't really love a doll, I sell it - I don't like clutter and these days I have zero money for new dolls or clothes or wigs - and it's not much fun if you can't either buy or make things for your dolls, in my opinion (we all have dolls for different reasons, so that might not bother someone else).

Ideally I'd like about 5 dolls max - having had nearly 30 at one time. A small collection is easier to display and keep clean, and it's easier to shop for just a few dolls instead of many. If I see another doll I really want, then someone from my existing collection has to go - I can't afford it otherwise! Usually the craving for a new doll passes - and if it doesn't then I'll save up, sell some things on ebay, sell some existing dolls, wait for birthday money, etc. I wouldn't go in debt or get layaway as I don't have enough disposable income for emergencies then. It's much cheaper and just as fun to restyle an existing doll, or even just buy a new head for an existing doll you're not crazy about! ^_^

    6. I just want a few dolls, with one outfit each, and nothing extra. Yeah, that has not happened yet. :doh
I'm still struggling to get them all dressed, especially with shoes. So right now, I am focusing on finishing what I have and no new additions. I still wish and dream for the new releases, but just can't deal with any more right now.

    7. Ideally I'd like a few dolls with tons of things for each of them... But this doesn't quote work out... I have 16 dolls and just as many heads and waiting on 6 dolls and 6 heads. Most of my floaters are event heads or limited dolls I couldn't afford otherwise at the time or were planning to hybrid (I like variety in bodies when that's possible). I also have a wishlist of like 15 dolls long... And I'll also be needing bodies for the floaters, so... @_@ //Sigh... Lots and lots of dolls! But I also want a lot of stuff... Which I've been trying to accumulate slowly... I think part of the fun is playing and styling the dolls so I love having a lot of things around. Sometimes it never feels quite enough and is overwhelming...

    8. I have a large collection, but I like for all of them to have one good wig and set of eyes, and several outfits and shoes. I make a lot of their clothes, so that's not really too costly for me, though I do like to spoil them. I'm currently downsizing my collection, so I'm really hoping in the future to mostly just spoil the ones I keep. I hate having a blank doll, or one with only one or two outfit options.

    9. I prefer to use my funds to buy more dolls and have fewer accessories. Most of my dolls only have one outfit each, though there are a couple exceptions. I at least make sure they have a set of clothes, eyes, wig, and shoes before I buy another doll.

    10. I would rather have many dolls with a few things :). Usually I decide on a certain look for a character and I don't feel like changing it around all the time. So I might decide on an extra wig or dress but I will never a huge wardrobe for just one doll.

    11. In reality I have 'few dolls and few things'. I don't feel a need for my dolls to have lots and lots of clothes; generally I like them to have a winter outfit and a summer outfit. They also have set hairstyles/eye colour so have one wig and one set of eyes each.

If I had to choose, I'd probably go for 'lots of dolls and few things!'. I wouldn't want my doll ownership to get out of hand and I think it makes it more special not having a boatload of dolls, saving and planning them meticulously, but it is hard since there's so many I like and I'm not gonna lie, I'd have lots more if I could.

    12. If you've been collecting for a long time, you can have both. :) Start with the dolls. Accessories and clothes accumulate over the years, regardless of how much you spend on each item. Before you know it, all those dolls have many lovely things. My collection is almost 10 years old, so everyone has quite enough stuff at this point.

Some of my dolls really don't require many Things, so they were finished quickly. For example, my Soom merman never changes into his human form, and my Volks Rei-tenshi can't even wear clothes, so I save a fortune by not having to shop for them. ^^ Other dolls change their clothes/looks all the time, because I love to redesign and re-equip them every so often; those dolls end up with the lion's share of Things.

    13. I prefer a few dolls with a lot of stuff for all of them. The two planned dolls have quite a few things ordered that we are waiting on, but the unplanned YOSD only has a Barbie dress I bought her. ^^'

I don't plan on getting anymore unplanned dolls (unless by some miracle I win something again), so my next dolls will have stuff waiting for them. And my YOSD will have clothes next time I place an order.

I just like having multiple outfits/wigs and I want them to have furniture and accessories as well. I collect figures and I can't really change them out of their PVC outfits, so it's just nice to have something that I can change. The figures are also kind of the reason I want a small collection. If I get too many dolls, I'll have no room for me in here.

    14. I like the stuff that goes with the dolls about as much as the dolls themselves. Although I have a TON of dolls by now, it's not because I'm going for a TON of dolls! It's just that I've been buying for over 10 years. I'd prefer to have stuff for my dolls and fewer dolls... BUT, I sometimes have to go with the dolls first if they are limited and I don't want to risk not buying them...

    15. What I have are a few dolls, with a few accessories (wig and eyes), with lots of clothes and other stuff (furniture and props). All my BJDs are finished dolls, except for mt Lati yellow head that needs a body and face up. I always end up getting/making them lots of clothes but, typically only have one set of eyes and one wig for them.

    16. I have a floating head and I'm looking for a body for it but that's it. Unless my grail doll comes up, I'm not getting another so it's onwards towards props and clothes!

    17. Finishing off the dolls I have, mostly before or while others arrive, and then moving on to finish the others.

Tho i'd like MANY dolls with FEW stuff.
I plan to make a set for each doll anyway, with a few "bonus" things.

    18. Well I prefer both of course lol, but I must admit that I give priority to first getting the dolls, only if they are not standard, if they are, they can wait. None of the dolls I own are complete, they all need outfits, and I am still looking for the "perfect" wigs and eyes to complete their characters. I am not in a rush to get them all finished, there's a lot of work involved in each character and I know it will take me sometime to even gather all the materials I need for sewing and crafting the stuff I have in mind, but like I said, it can be taken easy because after I have the doll I can relax.

    19. I used to make sure each doll was finished with face-up,eyes,wig and a few sets of clothes before I bought a new one... but I now have a doll out for face-up (with no wardrobe) and three dolls incoming :sweat I got kinda bored with my collection how it was so I sold a lot of dolls and switched up my collection. But now I'm in this weird in-between stage where I have three complete dolls and a mess of incomplete ones :| I need to get the incomings finished before I buy anymore!

    20. I only have two dolls. I'm planning on expanding my family soon. But I would like to make sure they all have one out fit, wig, and eyes before I buy more accessories for them. But I ready have so many shoes for the two I have now, lol. :dance
