1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

your style vs your dolls

Jun 4, 2013

    1. (Sorry if someone already posted a question like this)

Im addicted to shopping especially shoes and bags, and while I was saving for my doll I missed sooo many great sales :(
So I started to wonder if other doll owners forgo their own style and appearance for the sake of making the perfect doll. Also how does your personal fashion sense compare or contrast with that of your bjd's ?

    2. I think all too often I'd rather spend money on new doll things than things for myself. :P

    3. I don't have any nice clothes for myself, but my dolls have frilly/fancy clothes-compared to how I dress anyway .

    4. I'd rather shop for my dolls. They look prettier than me, so I focus on them. lol Also, while I try not to look like a slob, I just rarely have interest in a ton of accessories or expensive clothes for myself.

As far as style, my dolls have more of the styles I'd LIKE to have, but can't pull off. I have almost all boys, and dressing as a guy doesn't work well for me. :P

    5. I don't feel that my style suffers so that my dolls can look good. I still buy nice clothes and accessories for myself more than I do for them. The nice thing about dolls is that they don't really -need- many clothes because they don't grow and don't wear them out, so to speak. I suppose the joints could rub but still.

    6. Basically me. lol.

Since I got back into BJD I have definitely stopped clothes shopping as much. I should probably save up though because I have almost nothing for summer :S

    7. Basically a combination of those two!

Annora gets put into whatever I find cool, interesting, or pretty--so far, mostly historical and fantasy stuff. I love it on her! My own style is much more specific and planned. I'm extremely picky and hunt bargains, so it isn't too hard to spend money on doll fabric and supplies instead of my own clothes when there's nothing I want anyway.

Right now Annora's usually in a green Victorian-style riding suit I made for her, but I have a few other things in progress. I'm still designing the clothes she wears in the sci-fi story I write about her, but once I figure that out, she'll definitely be getting those outfits. Her sculpt is gorgeous, so she looks great in literally everything.

There's just a lot more to take into consideration with my own wardrobe: comfort, durability, suitability for different settings and occasions, and flattering my not-as-perfect-as-a-BJD figure. I mostly go for structured pieces with long lines, vertical seams, and silhouettes that make me look taller (I'm 4'11"). Almost everything I own is black, gray, military green or white, and I accessorize to make the pieces stand out. I love chains, faux leather, lace, faux fur, buckles, boots, flowers, and spikes, but as personal touches, not the "main course" of an outfit.

...and I spend too much time on polyvore.

    8. I do not spend on me more than necessary, and i do not spend on my dolls more than necessary... in style, me and my dolls contrast very much, i choose what it looks best on them rather than mmm 'imposing' my style on my dolls.

    9. My clothing tends to be on the pricey side. It's not unusual for a dress to cost the same as an MSD! It's because of that that my doll has a small wardrobe, but since I can sew BJD clothes, it isn't as small as it otherwise would be.

My doll tends to wear more dark colours where I love to dress in pastels! Her clothing can be anything from modern to fantasy to Victorian influenced! I don't know if I could ever dress her in the same clothes as me. I have another doll too, but she dresses strictly in modern dresses or victorian inspired outfits. She wears mostly florals and jewel tones!

    10. In my case, it comes and goes... sometimes I just buy a lot of clothes for my dolls (and nothing for me)... but then... I stop buying for them, and I start to buy for me! hahaha
And... regarding to the other question... I have to admit that I dress them in the same style that I do... that is, the usual jeans, shirts, shorts, sneakers, boots.

    11. my dolls wear what I could never get away with ^^. Some items because of expense, some because well wearing some period related outfits is just not doable now, no place for Rococo on the streets. I adore theatre costume.... hate being ON stage, done it.... *cringe* not my thing. Some things because I would just look dumb in it LOL. My dolls style will be (only got the 1st boy so far) what mine can not be ^^.

    12. I'm still in waiting for my first BJD, but I'm sure he will be just as dashing as I am. I play on Second Life as well, and my avatar wears a LOT of clothing that I, myself, could never pull off. Either that, or I'm just too prudish to wear them. lol
p.s. My profile pic is my SL avatar. He's a lot beefier that I am. :|

    13. I'm not much of a fashion person and I don't go clothes shopping much ... I used to go every now and then with my best friend, but since I moved away I kinda stopped. Not that my closet was anything but stuffed anyway so I guess it doesn't matter much :sweat
I might bring home a new piece of clothing every once in a blue moon, but I usually can't be bothered to go look for new stuff unless I really need it.
That being said, I don't buy doll clothes either - I make them. And I've developed a habit of bringing home fabrics instead of clothes and just make my own, too ... so far only dresses and summer pants and the occasional skirt, but I've got both plans and fabrics for more.
As for style - I can't say I've got one style, I just wear whatever I like. My dolls have their own different styles reflecting their personalities. While I like pretty much everything they wear, some things aren't for me because of colours etc (I can't pull off green too well and I wouldn't be caught dead in anything pink) ... but some patterns were inspired by things I found in my own wardrobe, so there's a bit of an overlap there, too.

    14. 100%! I would much rather style my doll than myself! After all, I think she is beautiful and I don't think much of myself, why would I put my own fashion first when I can achieve so much more by buying things for her haha! I gave up on myself long ago, but she is beautiful in a way I will never bel

    15. I love fashion and clothes, and before being in the hobby, it was a bit too much on my budget to be honest, I bought new clothes constantly... so now I split my budget between me and the doll hobby.

I have more of an edgy style I think? I don't know how to describe it but I mix everything I find cute. I think each of my dolls will have a different style, but most of their wardrobe will be jeans and t-shirt... I'm planning a couple of more complex stuff for their main outfit because they are in the Shadowrun universe, which is a bit futuristic.

    16. i actually got into this hobby with the intention of making [what will hopefully be] beautiful clothing for my dolls:fangirl:
i like fashion and clothing a lot but i need to start saving money as i have decided to study for a degree and as many of you know...they aren't cheap. so as i won't be able to afford as many nice clothes for myself why not make them for my dolls? it's pretty inexpensive to buy the small amounts of fabric i will be using
for a little while i wore Lolita fashion but it was too impractical for me, i actually funded my first doll purchases [one of which i a still waiting on] by selling all my lolita dresses. but for a doll i can make the most elaborate impractical things i can think of

so in some ways yes i feel like my own personal style will suffer slightly, but as that would have been the case anyway i don't mind for my doll to become more stylish than me

    17. I buy a lot of clothes and stuff for myself and only when I have money to spare I shop for my BJDs. I certainly prefer to buy clothes, shoes, and accessories for me than buying stuff for the dolls, and I wouldn't sacrifice this to make them beautiful (they are already beautiful anyway). After all they don't need tons of clothes, shoes, wigs and etc., but I do (well not really, but I like shopping xD). I come first, the dolls come... after :p

"Their" style is certainly similar to my own, but I dress with less variety. After all, they have kimonos, for example ^^"

    18. I'm not that interested in shopping and styling for myself, but I want to make my dolls look good ^_^ I feel pretty limited to what clothes I can wear, because I'm self conscious and don't like to stand out much. I can't wear goth, punk, lolita, fantasy, etc. So my dolls do for me.

Money wise, I don't buy that much for my dolls--I make a lot of the their clothes myself. I end up spending my extra money on the dolls themselves and accessories like wigs and eyes. I don't like to spend a lot on clothes and things for myself.

    19. I like to look pretty (and show off my figure, eheh...), and my style has been changing over time, but now it's more or less evened out to jeans and corset-ish tops or just tighter sleeveless tops under big cardigans. I shop almost exclusively second hand because it's cheaper and I always spot great scores, but only one of my dolls dresses kinda like me, and she doesn't usually wear corset-ish tops... I try to get things for my dolls that they would buy, regardless of what I want to dress them up like. Even though I'd love to have a doll who wears vintage styles, none of them have that kind of taste in clothes. I only plan on having three male dolls. One of them dresses like an average guy, doesn't really care what he wears but likes to buy cool T shirts. One of them is a little more fashion-conscious, but he's also a part-time model, so yeah. The last is a gentleman from all eras, as he disregards the concept of time, but he wears very classy suits. Only one of my Yo's wears proper clothing! She likes to wear cute things. (The others wear animal pelts for the most part, or just go naked.) Then all my ladies will have a lovely range of styles, all of which I'm sure I'll end up spending a small fortune on. (It is QUITE a range, from sci-fi cosplay to semi-historical-fantasy, to modern day casual and modern fashion...) But yeah, I don't like to spend more than $10 on a shirt or pair of pants for myself, whereas I'd be willing to spend up to $30 for a nice pair of doll pants!

    20. I'd much rather spend money on things for Nadeko than on things for myself, it takes too much money and effort for me to look half as nice as she does so I don't even bother.
and I also hate buying myself clothes and shoes.

our "styles" are nothing alike, I don't even think that I have a "style", the only thing Nadeko and I have in common when it comes to our clothes are that neither of us wears jeans
she wears all the cute clothes that I can't wear
