1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Your Surprise/Sudden/Unplanned Acquisition Stories...

Oct 21, 2007

1. If this thread already exsists please merge. I searched but probably didn't think of the most obvious ideas. I have had two unexpected, unplanned, dolls come into my collection, never mind my Cyndy who was a dream doll I scooped up implusively without planning anything... I am curious about the circumstances of others.... How common are unplanned dolls in the hobby, and how long do those unexpected dolls remain in the collection?

I'll chip in mine. What inspired this thread was a billing invoice I recieved from my auction deputy service that was about $700 more then it should be. Turns out, instead of bidding on one doll I asked them about, they put my bid on two dolls, same mold... Whoops. I don't think I am likely going to keep that one. Never been interested in twins, but who knows...

This summer I was in the Shinjuku sumika and looking at their mini's. In my terrible Japanese, I was talking to the manager there about minis and I mentioned that I've kinda always wanted a Mary/Marie since we share the same name and I think the doll and I have the same face. He told me he was sorry, that they had been sold out of that doll for awhile, and that he had to go back to work in the back but could I please wait for him to come back out. Well, I suspected he was calling the other stores for me to find my Marie and was incredibly thankful. So, I am browsing through the store, time is passing, and about an hour later he comes up from the elevator (when did he leave???). He is SOAKED (it was raining hard) and carrying a big bag. AWWWW!!! He had borrowed an employee's scooter, gone to another sumika, personally picked up a Marie for me, and brought it back!!! Who does that??? Well, I really didn't have the money for it at the time, but I'm pretty sure I would have gone to hell if I said "no thanks!"

And you?

2. wow! thats customer service!! There are many in the Haven Way gang with that kind of story. Ringo being number 1 as i never expected to win him from Brightfires kind offer for adoption for nothing more then a name in the hat to be pulled kind of game.

theres Oranda the goldfish, who i had seen many times for sale and never bought till one day i had to save her from her wandering from home to home (guess she was never happy being a boy)

Kanda the doll i bumped the owners thread for ever and a half and no one ever came to look at her...or no one ever expressed interest at all. I love her. she turned out to be a great impulse buy.

theres more but id swamp the thread with em.

3. The Recall twins. I had no interest in buying a 70, way to big. Entering the Dollzone contest was half fluke and half fate. Barely had my mini and I was taking all sorts of pics. Finally my sister and I headed for a local Victorian house and garden but it was closed! The sun was setting so we took a few shots in the grounds outside. For the magic one I held Xavier and my sister snapped a few frames. Had we not been finalists and won heads there would be no Bowie twins, nor their Labrynth video.

Dad also came around as a fluke. My sister and I went to the Volks tea party and got gift certificates. I was hoping to win a doll but numbers were on my side and Xavier had to be #13 no SD for me :(. So a few days later I made my only visit to the store in LA got Dad his body and some shoes.

4. My best friend and I made a large order to Dollmore, and I owed her for my half of it still. So the next day, she suddenly sits me down in front of the computer, and says: "I know you've been looking at Tinies. Pick out the one you want, I'm paying for it for your half of the Dollmore order, it's your birthday present." And then she opened up Cherishdoll, and says: "I know I said pick the one you want, but I'm paying. Jodie or Chubby?"

I never expected to get a mini. But I get to open his box tomorrow.

5. I broke three of my personal BJD resolutions with a single doll:

1. Never buy an LE doll
2. Never buy a doll smaller than SD-13
3. Never buy more than three complete dolls

. . . and now I am waiting on my DZ Xi Aleister.

6. My Unidoll Jace Kazimir was completely unplanned, I had just ordered a Unoa Lusis and was quite content waiting for her. Then one day this gorgeous boy came up on the marketplace. I took one look at him and that was it, I pm'ed the owner and bought him right there and then! I love him to bits and would never part with him.

7. My last 4 were completely unplanned (very impulse buys):

I had ordered my 2nd big girl (that i had waited over a year since my 1st one) and was patiently waiting on her when i discovered the Cherishdoll site and fell in love with Chubby. He arrived a week after my big girl arrived. he was to be the end of it but then Tinybear put her Kid Delf Woori up for adoption and i had fallen inlove with the Woori head mold due to my friend Asato's little Tsukasa so i fell in love with him. I got evil stares from my family on that. Not another child to clothe. So he was to be the end. Then last month I saw an auction on ebay for a little Angel Fantasy Koli. now i liked Ari and was planning to get her next year but i couldn't resist this. she has wings and elf ears and she was just so gosh darn cute. i emailed her and she had already sold Koli but she told me she could get another one soon and check back with her. in the meantime Cherishdoll decided to run their sale so i couldn't resist being able to get the Jodie girl i had wanted since i bought Chubby. I got the 2 of them within 2 days of each other. There was to be one more but our order fell through which ended up being for the best. No more impulse dolls for me for a while.

8. *heh*
DZ is just eeevil for creating that boy, aren't they. XD

Xi-Aleister is my 'impulse buy' too...I really shouldn't have bought him, since I just bought a DZ Mo last weekend, and am in the middle of paying off the layaway for another limited doll...and I had to take money out of my savings account to pay for him....^^;
I figured out who he is within the context my storyline almost instantaneously though...and a day later figured out who he used to be, which sealed it even more, so I had to buy him.
Not to mention the fact that I have always had an odd soft spot for his namesake Aleister Crowley...not that I would probably have liked him if I could have ever met him, but you have to admit the guy did his own thing and did it with serious flair. X3

9. Heh, in my case it was something like: "Oh look, Luts is releasing new dolls again. Well, I already have a mini and I don't want any more, but I'll just take a quick look... OMGBoryisadorableIhavetobuyhimNOW!"

First time that happened to me too. I'm more the type to agonize about if I reeeeeeaaaally should buy that doll or if I should wait and see if something more tempting shows up. Unfortunately that usually leads to me missing out on stuff, so maybe I should learn to be a bit more spontanious.

As for my Bory being unplanned making him less likely to stick around... No way! He integrated himself just fine before I even placed the order for him (and I did that damn fast).

10. If I had the money to spend, there would be atleast, 2 complete SDs, one that's limited. A Baha, a couple of other tinies, including a Domadoll centaur(Still debating on head...). And a Artist-made doll.

I am insane. I hope I marry rich xD -knock on wood-

11. When I went to Dollectable with my mother last year, we bought two Elfdoll dolls. Funny thing was, we had talked about it for much of the con, but I went off on Sunday to check out an exhibit at an art museum and ended up getting back after the dealer's room closed. We had asked one of the dealers to hold onto a Wu for us and planned on buying it when I got back. When I called my mother on the phone to ask if she had picked up the doll, she scolded me saying I shouldn't have been late and when she went back to the room, the lady had already gone, etc. etc.

So I get back and go up to our hotel room and start looking around for something, I don't remember what, in the room. Then I notice these two large suspicious looking doll-shaped packages. It turns out my mom had not only bought me the Wu but also a Ruru, which I had been kind of eyeing. She likes playing these sorts of tricks on me so I should have known, but I was quite amused by how convincing she had been that time.

I also ended up getting an MSD Rock at a Dolpa Kyoushitsu that I tried to participate in on a whim for my thesis.

12. When I was at the 2006 Austin convention I had no intention of buying a doll but during the room sales, the very first room I went into, I spotted an Iplehouse Lion that someone was selling. I knew he'd be the perfect doll for my Loge character so I bought him immediately and have never regretted it.

13. Unidoll 06 was unplanned--I followed a link to the Unidoll site from DoA (it was when it had first gone up), and saw the 06. I knew immediatly that I had to have him. He was perfect for one of my characters, though it was a minor character that I had never planned to get a body for. I ended up with him (though I probably shouldn't have spent the money), and have never regretted it. He's beautiful and Unidoll is one of my favorite companies now.

14. ALL of my dolls are "Surprise/Sudden/Unplanned Acquisition Stories..." xD

My first doll, my DOC Too. Well DOD launched they're valentines event (which back then you couldnt get a Too with a long legged body without buying the head and body seperately) and i'd been saving really hard for a Camine. But my friend had been saving aswell so we both caved in and decided to split a valentines Too & Bee-A. So that's how my first guy came.

My second one was just after a week Bory had been launched it was almost my birthday and my friend and her sister (Shido and Taruhi~) both gave me £50 for my birthday, i didn't know whether to accept it at first but they sent the money in a little letter with a picture of Bory saying "please love me <3". So i couldn't say no really, not considering they were paying half the cost for him! So he was my birthday present (albiet he arrived over a month later xD but there goes the rest of my DOT fund)

My third doll, who i'm waiting for now x3 His actually a christmas present! Though i consider it a sort of layaway cause i do have to pay the money back eventually xD But i don't feel bad about that, i'd feel much worse if i didn't have to pay him back! I could never except so much money for nothing, even for christmas (we don't have much money as it is) so most of next year will be paying him back. But he'll be worth it *_* (least there's no intrest!)

So yes.. Impulse gifts xD God knows i feel incredibly lucky at the moment.

15. I guess the best ones are the ones you dream about and then get a chance to just go for it. Darn the consequents! First it was Howl saw real pics of him and just had to have him, then came Howl as a child, always wanted a YO-SD and I am very into the boys and darned if I didn't find one here so he'll be here by Mon and then saw a Limwha Mono and just knew he would be perfect as Howl as a Teen and bid on him and won, he should be here later this coming week. All pretty much unplanned, only one on a wish list and now I have until end of Nov to raise funds to cover the CC bill that will reflect all of them plus one other. But I am over the moon with my boys and I know if I am good it will all work out okay.

16. more my moms story XD three days ago I suggested to get souldoll hye toghether ( since now they have the free shipping till 31 dec and till then I could have saved up the half but not everything) she said she had to think about it... now yesterday she kinda said yes, and today she yelled at me how we had to pay to korea >.< so were getting her now! she just decided in three days... and she's paying the biggest part of her ( wich I have to pay back eventually) I would have never thought she would say ok so quick >.< so now I'm waiting till the money is on my acount and I can order her :D

17. I love that story SailorLimaBean!
Unplanned dolls come to my house alot, I call them "accidents". I think the last one was Batchix's Machina, which I am now on the waitlist for. I was at the BJD Artist's Retreat and I saw her holding her robot girl, and I kind of slid over and said, "can I hold her" and that was that. Then it was "can I buy her?" She is so beautifully made, so finely crafted, such a little adorable resin sculpture I couldn't believe she could someday be mine. Sigh.

18. SailorLimaBean- Now *thats* what you call customer service. The one thing I absolutely love about shopping in Japan is that they seriously treat customers like "god". Polite, patient, always smiling, and go out of their way to make what you want possible (within reasonable bounds that is~). :thumbup

Honestly besides my first doll Rain (DoT Sha), the rest of my dolls were all pretty much unplanned for.
Xiao-Lang (DoC T.Too) was part of a inpulse buy/split I did with a friend during DOD's Valentine special -the deal was too good to pass up~
Next came Ace (KD Bory) who I've sort of been eyeing since he first came out, but thought nah don't need another 45cm sized doll and forgot about him for awhile. Then couple weeks later at 7am the day after a cousin's wedding, up and bought him instead of the outfits I was eyeing for Rain... ^^;

At the moment there are one and a half incoming dolls: another Bory (on layaway, will be home next month!) and a Migidoll Miho. The instant I saw this second Bory in the marketplace, just couldn't see him going home with anyone else. <3 Twins really aren't part of my doll plan, EVER, but there you have it. :doh
Still trying to work out their relationship- doppolegangers or twins? (spell check plz) Ain't got a clue. *laugh*

19. My unplanned dolls make up at least half of my complete dolls, and two floating heads. ¬.¬

Mostly just head molds that I want and pine for, and then find for a "can't say no price" in the marketplace. Ricky Callas. Nanuri 07...

My best story is Daniel, my Soom Namu. I orginally bought him in the ufk thats Soom was selling last year for christmas, and with their free shipping, and I needed a body for a head that I already had. I picked Namu well, because I liked him and he's probably the most popular boy outta the soom SD's - fully intending to keep the body and sell the head.

Well, low and behold I got the Namu and the body didn't really suit the head it was intended for (too skinny) and the skintone match was horrific. I figured I'd get a cheap face up on the Namu head, and sell the complete doll once I'd sanded it as a completely strung doll. (for profit, I admit it.)

And then I managed to score a free face up on the boy and it was fantastic. Then I put eyes in him. And me mum went "I really like that one...can I put a wig on him?"

Now he's called Daniel and is staying, probably for ever. XD

Moral of the story? Never buy a mold you "like" and buy with a body cos "You need the body and the head will sell cos it's liked."

It *doesn't* work!

20. That is such a sweet story, SailorLimaBean. Thank you for sharing it. It's so nice to hear how much some people care. :)

I have quite a few dolls that weren't planned. My MSD Enn was a one off for the first NY Volks event. I hadn't planned on getting an MSD, didn't have a character in mine for him or anything. But I just fell in love with his sweet face and was lucky enough to bring him home with me. (My credit card has been my best friend in situations like those. XD)

My Elfdoll K-SS wasn't planned either. I had entered in the naming contest on a lark, but hadn't seen the finished headmold and didn't think I'd buy it if I didn't win. But then it was released and I was smitten and had to own him.

I wasn't expecting to bring home a rei-tenshi either. I'm very grateful to the people at Volks for their generosity!

And... currently I have a YoTenshi Yuki coming to me. My dream doll that just so happened to be re-released over my birthday. I was never expecting to get this doll, and certainly not so soon. ^^

I have yet to sell any of my unplanned dolls. Most of them I would have not been able to get unless I had been impulsive, so I find it very had to plan some of these things. XD
