Your take on wigs made from human hair

Aug 28, 2011

    1. First off, I apologise if a conversation similiar to this has already been started. I searched the forums and onlu found tips and how-to's. Please delete if there is one. Also, apologies for any spelling mistakes, as I am typing this all up on my phone.

I attended a panel on BJDs during an anime convention this summer, the woman hosting the panel made an interesting comment. She was talking about the benefits of using human hair, as is it is ideal for wigs. She then stated that a lot of people tend to freak out when you actually tell them your doll is wearing a wig made of the stuff. She said that sometimes it was best to just lie and say the wig is synthetic..

Now I am not asking if you think human hair is the better material, there is enough of that on this site. What I am asking is does it freak you out? Why or why not? Do you proudly tell others that your doll is wearing human hair? Or do you sweep that little detail under the rug? How do your friends and/or family view the idea? Personally, I am one of the people who view it as creepy. I just never liked seeing human hair on anything other than flesh and blood humans. Made into wigs for humans is fine too, I just don't think it belongs on dolls. It gets too real for me. Especially if the doll is wearing the hair of his/her owner. Then I think about the cleanliness of that wig. I wonder what that person went through in life; dirt, lice, sex, ect. I do not like lying, but I'd be fine with NOT being told what the wig is made out of.

    2. I'm mostly indifferent to the idea. It doesn't really creep me out but I wouldn't buy a human hair wig, mostly because I don't really need a super great ultra nice wig, synthetic or fur is fine as long as it does what I want.
I do agree that human hair wigs are better suited for humans... just because there are people out there who need a wig, but don't want to wear synthetic fiber, and a doll won't really care what gets put on it's head.

I guess it's kind of a to-each-their-own thing for me xD

    3. It's also a waste to spend hundreds of dollars on resin instead of donating it to charities, etc. It isn't really different than using human hair for wigs.

I could EASILY have made many wigs with my own hair as it sheds like my cats. o____o; I do think that synthetic wigs are better to use on dolls than humans though. It doesn't freak me out. What I get freaked out over is animal fur being used for wigs.... -here comes the PETA train XD- I would tell people proudly. Especially if I made it myself.

    4. It doesn't bother me at all to use human hair for wigs. I've never had any, so I can't say whether I like them better or worse than anything else. The deciding factor for me with wigs is getting the right style and color in the same wig (wigs are perpetually giving me trouble). If a human hair wig had the traits I wanted, then I would not be opposed to trying one.

    5. The only problem with human hair wigs, is they need ALOT of care, you have to regularly moisturize them or the hair will dry out.

    6. I really don't get why it freak poeple out. I've always found silly how when they find a hair that do not belong to them on their stuff they'd instantly shout "EWWWW" and brush it away. it's....hair. unless the person it used to belong to never washed his/her hair it's not gross xD
so personally, really don't mind wig made of human hair ^^ what I prefer about syntethic wig is that they look more shiny and soft :3

I don't see why this is waste either. it's certainly more eco-friendly than synthetic hair!

    7. Someone once told me that some of the human hair on the market is stolen from dead people. I know, I know it's just a stupid urban legend but ever since then the idea of a human hair wig grosses me out. Totally irrational, but it's why I'd never put a human hair wig on a doll.

    8. See for me, if I know who the hair came from, it's ok - most of the people I know have great personal hygiene. It's if it's a mystery hair that I can't pin to anyone, then I freak out - because then I don't know what kind of hair hygiene they have.

Because of this, I wouldn't buy a human hair wig, unless I knew the person making them was a proper wig maker with good sources. Even then, I'd assume they would be more expensive than synthetic fibre, and so I wouldn't buy it simply on a price basis since I'm stingy with my poor dolls :P

    9. If it's ethically sourced, then I have no problem with this whatsoever.

    10. I don't have any human-hair wigs, but one of my dolls does have human-hair eyelashes. Satoko Ohno used them on her repaints, because she liked the way they curled and styled. I severely doubt there are anything like lice or cooties in the hair that was sourced for these particular eyelashes; I just do. And they look fantastic, btw.

As for the sourcing, human-hair wigmakers usually pay some decent money to the person who's selling her/his hair... I've known some folks who were happy to have a nearby "we buy hair" place when they needed money. I would rather view it as helping hair-sellers in need, rather than exploitation. But, I suppose the same business could be viewed differently depending on your particular angle & politics.

My wig needs have been so far fulfilled by synthetics and animal-hair. But if I did find a human-hair wig that met my needs better than a synthetic one, sure, I'd buy it. I don't have that "ick factor" reaction that some people have-- what, as though the wig were made with filthy matted lice-ridden hair harvested from a pile of corpses, & then sold directly to you without being washed or sterilized? Reeeeally. -_-

    11. It doesn't bother me.

Maybe this is because my hair stylist's mother makes doll wigs and keeps begging me to send her my hair if I ever cut it since I dye it crazy colors and it's fairly long, but... it's probably not that. ;)

It doesn't really bother me. What the person did before they cut their hair? Not my problem, so long as it's properly cleaned and processed. Most hair used for hair weaves and such that is human hair is processed to be certain it's clean and disease-free; I would trust that above what I'd trust of my own hair if I ever used it, because I don't use chemicals any harsher than shampoo/hair dye on it, and the cleansing chemicals we heard about in a hair-related costume course were described as 'not to be used outside an industrial setting'. Also figure, if it's colored after it's wefted or cut to match a catalog color, it's very likely it's going to be hit with some bleaching chemicals if nothing else.

My main concern with human hair wigs is that a number of common sources for human hair result in hair that is somewhat coarse; having had extensions sewn-in once, it was too coarse to actually blend properly with my hair, and that would definitely make it too coarse to look natural on a doll, IMHO.

The private lifestyle of the person the hair comes from, quite frankly, isn't my business, and I can't be bothered to care. My only concern would be whether it was collected willingly or not; that's not exactly a huge problem in this day and age to the best of my understanding, but really, that would be my only concern about the source.

It is also important to note that hair for human being wigmaking, or groups like Locks of Love, require a certain length and certain types of hair. If the hair is not qualified for that program, I see no waste whatsoever involved -- in fact, I'd think making a doll wig with it would be considerably less wasteful than just throwing it out. http://www.locksoflove.org/donate.html -- has a list of the qualifications. Not everything qualifies -- and shorter lengths or bleached/bleach and colored/grey hair, for instance, could be entirely usable with dolls.

    12. I have many dolls (not BJD) that have human hair ~ so obviously it doesn't bother me. This topic came up a while back on another forum and garnered some interesting comments and fears. I know that commercial wig makers do NOT use hair from corpses; wigs are cleaned and dyed; lice cannot live on non-living items (since they require blood to live and reproduce).
As far as using one on a bjd ~ I would have to see that wig, first. Human hair is usually more coarse and, in my opinion, better suited for larger dolls simply for the way it would lay.

    13. I have a kneejerk ACK! reaction to human hair wigs. I don't assume they would be in any way dirty or worry about what the previous owner of the hair might have done. I think I might mentally associate it with mohair and wool wigs, which I'm 1. allergic to and 2. undecided on just how comfortable I am with them. Hair is kind of a personal thing, which might be what weirds me out. Another kneejerk reaction is that the wig wouldn't last as long or hold up as well, which I don't know if is true or not.

I've donated my own hair to a charity before, but surreality does make a good point in that not all hair would work for that purpose, so there could definitely be sources that wouldn't conflict with things like that. That's not a real concern for me either.

I don't know, so far the human hair ones I've seen for sale have not been very attractive to me, either. I may one day get a mohair wig, but for the most part I prefer the look of synthetic wigs on their equally synthetic hosts. While I seriously doubt I'd own a human hair wig, if I saw a nice one and the owner told me what it was made of, I wouldn't go "ew!" and run away. I'd just compliment them on it.

    14. I figure if it's something that looks good then that's what it is - something that looks good. Regardless of the source materials. Human hair isn't any more likely to carry disease than the wool shorn from a sheep, llama, goat or rabbit, after all!

Eh, a much shorter length of hair can be used for a doll-size wig than a human one, so that doesn't strike me as a particularly strong objection (and I suspect you don't object to doll clothes or synthetic wigs just because they could be used for humans in need, do you?).

    15. I doesn't bother me at all. In fact my Sayo who you see there <<< in my profile pic is wearing a human hair wig that I made. It styles like a dream.

The hair arrived at my home wefted and perfectly clean and beautiful.

    16. I am not quite sure...both consistency and realism matters to me. 'Natural' wigs can be a bit inconsistent. Human hair can vary very much. There's thick and thin, rough and smooth. Synthetic hair is probably more consistent, but not as realistic. But I am willing to try both:)!

    17. Actually that's not always true about human-hair wig makers paying decent money. ^^; If the hair is sourced in the US, then yeah but a lot of human hair for wigs is not.

A lot of human hair (used for wigs) is currently coming out of India (thank you documentary, Good Hair, a great documentary BTW) and is actually donated at temples or in some cases has actually been stolen from young women. o_O; (The film talks about young women having their hair cut without their permission while at the movies.) The people collecting the hair and selling it to the wig makers are making good money though.

      Going back to the topic on hand, I'm personally not bothered by human hair wigs for dolls. I have Orthodox relatives who wear human hair wigs over their own hair and the hair on some of these wigs looks stunning. I just would not pay the sort of money some of these wigs go for and I am not about to use my own hair to make a wig for a doll as mine is sort of frizzy >>;

    18. Apparently the Pacific Islands are another popular source -- that's apparently where mine came from for the extensions. (So not the same texture... and definitely too thick per strand for a doll.)

    19. While I don't find any problem with it if others use it, even if I come in contact with their doll, the idea of using them myself is a bit off-putting. I don't think I would like it, even though I donate my hair to be made into wigs when I get it cut. Although, perhaps it's simply the thought and if I did get one I would get over it and realize how silly my ick! reaction was.

    20. I'm not grossed out by them, strange considering I have huge OCD about not touching or being touched by other human beings, I just don't like them. All the human hair wigs I've seen for sale or in real life don't look appealing to me. I prefer the fur wigs. lol.

That doesn't mean that I'd criticize anyone for having them. It's all a personal choice and if I was ever to find a wig made of human hair that I liked I wouldn't let the material keep me from getting it.
