Your thoughts on fur wigs?

Oct 1, 2013

    1. I looked for a thread like this but found none.

So I've heard more than once that some people won't use fur wigs on their dolls because they're "cheaper and don't look as good." This bothers me a little. So far, only two of my dolls wear wigs that aren't fur, and I actually find them harder to manage and style. All of my fur wigs, except for a super cute Shaggies wig, come from MonstroDesigns, and they're incredibly soft, beautiful, and fun/easy to style.

So what do you guys think? Yay or nay for the fur wigs?

    2. Any type of wig can vary in quality. There are cheap and nasty looking fibre wigs around, and some beautiful, high quality fur wigs to be found. Fur is definitely easier to style, but there are also certain styles that just can't be achieved with fur, so it's really a matter of what you need the wig to do.

Personally I'm more of a fibre wig person. My dolls typically wear fantasy or historical outfits, and I think fur wigs tend to suit modern and casual clothes more. I also really like longer styles. Only one of my dolls wears a fur wig, but it suits him perfectly and I get more compliments from others about his wig than all of my other dolls combined.

    3. At first I really didn't want to buy a fur wig since I didn't like the look of them at all. But I had commissioned one for my second doll anyways and I love it, it came out perfect and now I have a bunch of dolls that have fur wigs!

    4. I enjoy both fiber and fur wigs, but my husband doesn't like the look of fur wigs at all. I have a MonstroDesigns wig too, and a Shaggies, and some from Beach Girl Nikita. I know I have others, but can't remember the brands right now. I think there's a place for fur wigs, and a place for fiber wigs. They're are pros and cons to each, good brands and bad brands for both.

I'm not sure why my husband doesn't like fur wigs. Perhaps the stigma is because fur wigs seem like a hobby wig (lots of those on etsy!) and fiber wigs seem more professional (none of those on etsy?) I know fur wigs take skill and practice and hard work to make, but still, there are lots of people teaching themselves how to make fur wigs, but I don't know of any (I'm sure there are some...) trying to hand make fiber wigs.

    5. well im still experimenting but i haven't found myself all that drawn to fur wigs either. i've seen people cut and restyle them and that looks really, really nice but otherwise they always look the same to me. like either super emo/scene or indie look that i could not care less about. not to mention i dont like side swept bangs which almost always accompanies the fur wig look :v

    6. I don't think ALL fur wigs look emo/indie. :/

Here's Whisper sporting a new long in the front MD wig:

While not the best picture of the wig itself, I love how the fur wigs are soft and fluffy.

    7. I really used to be against fur wigs for my dolls. I'm not totally sure why, but I think it was because most of the dolls I ever saw in fur wigs were boys. And I didn't collect boys. But then I saw the most gorgeous wig I'd ever seen from A-S, and I knew I needed it. And it was a fur wig, lol.

I'm using it for my Luts Centaur Bory, and I can't imagine him in anything but fur. Now my Mystic Kids Cris wears a fur wig, and my Soom Flint wears her original default fur wig. I also have spare fur wigs that I got because they are beautiful, lol. And my incoming DikaDoll Amanda has a custom wig being made for her!

I'm totally into fur wigs now. I think they are fabulous and adorable. But of course I still mostly use fiber wigs. But I am definitely pro-fur now instead of anti-fur like I was. I'm also super in Mohair as well. As my tastes change in this hobby, I like trying new things and textures!

    8. I have a really crappy fur wig on my guy right now. I was super bored with the "nice" wig he was sporting. So I slapped the $4 clearance item on his head. Its going to stay for awhile, its kinda fun for now. The people he comes in contact with seem to like it better because it's more in keeping with his slacker personality.
      So I say, whatever works...[IMG]

    9. Depends upon the wig. Overall I prefer wigs that are mohair, saran, or mod acrylic to fur but I've seen a few that I thought were nice and that I liked. The Monstro Design wigs do look like they are nice and soft and I've often wondered about them but they're a bit out of my league unfortunately. Pax in the RS minis thread has a really great rainbow wig that is fur that I totally covet. It looks like a Monstro so I'm thinking maybe it came from there? Every time I see that I really want one but I just can't swing $25-30 for a fur wig. I have a hard enough time just getting enough cash together to buy dolls. I just have to make the rest usually or forget it, shrug. It's very rare that I buy anything for my dolls new actually except for really cheap sneakers and stuff. They usually are in clothes I make or had from collecting other dolls and most of their wigs so far have come with them, off old porcelains or I've made them from yarn.

    10. I think it depends on the wig and the doll... Two of my EIDs and one of my LittleFees only look good in their fur wigs. I've never found a fiber one that works half as well for Kestrel, Palrah or Pally. I did by them good quality fur wigs, though, and I style them pretty carefully, and that does make a difference.

    11. I think it depends on how it's styled, or if it's styled. Some that are just chunks of fake fur sewn into a cap look really trashy but there are others that have been brushed or styled or even just put together better that look fantastic. I could spend hours drooling over Spite & Malice's flickr and purchaser photos. (Like I just did this weekend. ^.^) But sometimes the wig is supposed to look trashy, and even if I don't like it, mebbe the owner does and it fits their doll's character and it's not for me to judge them no matter what I think of it.

Sometimes even saran wigs look like junk, with the wefting sparse or not sewn to the wig cap correctly. Or mohair. And sometimes even the best wig winds up looking crappy when an owner never cares for it properly and it goes all clumpy or frizzy. So I think really it depends on the owner and their care of and for the doll's hair more than what the wig itself is made of.

    12. Personally I don't think I would ever use one, but I often really admire fur wigs on other people's dolls. They don't usually come in the styles that I look for, but if they did I would be all for using them instead of fiber!

    13. I am not all together attracted to the fur wigs in general, but I have seen some that people have done miracles with. I think like anything you can't really generalize.

    14. I think there can be a big difference in the quality of different fur wigs, and of course what you do with them. I have two fur wigs for my boy so far, one is gorgeous, and the other, not so much. I really don't think I can achieve the look of my character's hair better than with a fur wig, so for me, they are fine if they're one of the nicer quality ones.

    15. I hate fur wigs on my dolls but when I see some other people with them I gasp and wonder why my dolls can't look as good in a fur wig T_T I guess some people just have the fur styling skills.

    16. Wow, Razzy, that's a fur wig? That looks great!

Me personally, I haven't had any experience with fur or fiber, but I think I'd be open to both kinds depending on how I want the hair to look and what is available.

    17. Unhemmed faux fur wigs drive me batty. Those are the ones I dislike the most.

I think fur sometimes can look too thick in proportion to a doll's head, but a properly tamed and sewn fur wig can look great. And well the electrified poofball look looks great on some dolls since it's like anime-hair.

    18. I only bought one. Its slightly smaller than it should be for the doll I got it for. I think its lovely, but it doesn't fit her character and I always feel like I'm putting it back into place. I wouldn't mind trying my hand at making one of my own one day, but other wise nah.. I think they look very pretty though on many dolls in pictures. I am keeping my wig in hopes that one day I will get a doll it fits more.

    19. I don't know where you're seeing Monstro wigs for that expensive. Mine have only ever been 10-12 dollars, plus shipping.

    20. I kind of like fur wigs, but so far it's one of those things I like "on other peoples dolls". None of my current dolls would look good in one. But I have seen a lot of pictures where the fur wig has absolutely been the right wig for the doll.
As with just about everything else it is all about how you do it. Some fur wigs looks a bit cheap and others are gorgeous.
