Al is a mage, he works for the capital's school-turned-military and agrees to do some illegal work for a superior in order to pay off some debts and hopefully leave his job faster. He is tasked with 'rescuing' (see: abducting) a girl named Kaede as she unknowingly has some memories about a missing person that could prove vital to locating them. Alvere and Kaede become good friends enough for Alvere to get invested in the illegal work and continue it more than he has to, consequently getting arrested for it. He doesn't die but things worsen for him from that point on.
