Chini is an artificially-created human being; she is given life by a mysterious magical power source at the heart of the Smiley City Multiversity, a research center for the arcane arts, and cannot leave the bounds of the City without losing her connection to this source (which would involve dying.) She hopes to find a way to leave Smiley and travel the world one day, but makes do in the meantime by reading travelogues, chatting with the bustling City's numerous immigrants, and befriending weird animals. In the meantime, Chini runs errands and makes deliveries for a grumpy witch-doctor-turned-apothecary, and is vaguely expected to take over his business at some point -- except she doesn't seem to be getting any older or taller, which could be a problem...
