Laire and Ferennen exist in two completely separate AUs, and while their origin story is pretty much the same between the two, there are some slight differences, which is why I can't really give either of them a definitive gender. In Chronicles of Tirion, both of them are wholly male and have a slightly older brother, who is also their cousin, named Ellorne. Ellorne is the only son of Silrin's sister Annundil, and her husband Cianar (who is not a very good person). Silrin (their father), who is also known as Arnaedh the Ravager, fell in love with Cianar, who never returned his feelings, but strung him along for a good many years, before marrying his twin sister, Annundil, and then continuing to be a general prick about the entire thing. Silrin eventually grew tired of the teasing and had sex with his sister in response, impregnating her with twins: Ferennen and Lairelosse. When Cianar found out about it, he attempted to kill them twins and their mother, but only managed murdering Annundil, before Silrin arrived. He killed Cianar, took his kids and adopted Ellorne, raising them all as his own children, within the Cult of Melkor.

Ellorne became invested in poisons and biology, using "healer" as a cover, while Laire and Ferennen became assassins and spies, among other things. Nobody knows that they're part of the Cult of Melkor, as they've done a fabulous job of hiding it for thousands of years. In the modern age, Ellorne works as a doctor, and Laire and Ferennen are more or less very pretty mobsters, though they don't quite run in the same circles as Falathren does.

In Iron and Symphonies, Laire and Ferennen are... basically aliens. Silrin has a brother, named Redhril, instead of a sister, and the two of them are the result of a union between the Vala, Nienna, and a prince who escaped to Arda through a path in the Void. Silrin and Redhril had consensual sex, and Redhril gave birth to Ferennen and Laire. Laire, Ferennen, Redhril, and Ferennen's child, Helin, are all intersex, thus both sexes and capable of having children. Silrin and Laire's children are all one sex, though Laire's children are half balrog.

Silrin took his children and escaped from his twin to Angband, where he told Mairon that Redhril went mad and became abusive to both him and his children, though those accusations have never been proven one way or another. Ferennen and Laire were raised in Angband, alongside orcs and balrogs, and all manners of Melkor's army, and are thus, not afraid of them. Ferennen is a very good hunter, but he honestly spends most of his time partying and sleeping around; Laire is a linguist and ends up marrying Lungorthin, Melkor's right hand, and have two children: a boy and a girl.
