Granuaile Willowmere was born to an Elven mother as the result of an ill-fated romance with a Human. This of itself was not uncommon, but woe to such children born with rounded ears...as was Granuaile. Her mother disappeared shortly after she was born (was threatened and forced to leave the village without her baby), and she was raised as barely more than a servant in an Elven family. Although in many ways more Elven than the "highborn" Elves, Granuaile soon became aware of invisible barriers of prejudice around her. Never chosen first, never awarded a prize, never allowed to become close friends with other Elven children--she gradually realized the village held only the most limited of futures for her. When she fell in love with the son of a prominent family, his parents were outraged--and despite his deep love for her he was bullied into ending the relationship and moving away to marry the suitably high-born, icy-cold daughter of an Elven politician in another village. His parents sent him away without permitting him any farewell to Granuaile, who merely awoke one morning to find all the warmth gone from her life. She makes the decision to leave without Blessing, although this will mark her as Outcast, and as she is packing her meager belongings she discovers a forgotten tatter of message from a place called "Worthington Castle, Alcott Doane". Desperate, friendless, and determined, Granuaile begins a long journey to find Worthington Castle and perhaps a bright future unlike anything she had known.
