It's a variation of Heilyn. I was looking for a Welsh name and I liked the sound of that one.

Heilan is one of the Guardians of the West. He grew up on Terra, a magical land which exists parallel to Earth. He was orphaned young but ran away from the orphanage because he feared he would be chosen as a sacrifice to the dragon. Instead he lived rough, stealing to survive, until a woman named Mags took him in. She was a mother for motherless children, she called them her little magpies. She taught Heilan to steal more skillfully, what valuables were worth taking and she rewarded those her brought her the best things. She would move her children on once they became too big to dodge the arm of the law or escape adult punishment - most of the boys would go into the factories but some would be sent with the girls to her friend's house to work. But she had a soft spot for Heilan. Maybe it was because she knew she was growing old and wanted someone to take over from her. In any case, she kept Heilan around and they continued to fence the fruits of petty thievery until one day there was a chance for a final Big Job which would allow Mags to retire. A simple kidnapping.

The princess was being taken from her home to the neighbouring country where she was to reside with her fiance, the prince, until they married once he was 18. Mags hired some muscle and Heilan helped them ambush the convoy and kidnap the princess. The plan went smoothly until it became apparent someone else was already putting money in the thugs' pockets and they had no intention of waiting for a ransom. They attacked the Princess and tried to kill her. Heilan intervened and fled with the Princess.

No word from Mags meant he had to hole up in an inn, pretending the Princess was his wife. He tried to reassure her that he would keep her safe, that all he wanted was the ransom and once it was paid he'd let her go. And it did seem she grew to fear him less. With nothing to do but wait, they talked. They told each other their story and she was not the spoiled rich girl he had assumed her to be. She was intelligent, kind and always so serious that he counted it a personal victory every time he made her smile or even laugh. And then one night she kissed him and suddenly nothing else mattered, not the ransom, not Mags, not her prince, nothing but her.

The following morning brought clarity. He could see that she was horrified by what they had done and he could not bear the thought of hurting her further. He took her to the nearest Watch and let her go.

He returned home. It seemed neither side had been willing to pay the ransom when they could blame the other instead. But that didn't matter. Heilan had betrayed the Magpies by letting her go. Mags had already chosen someone to replace him and she warned Heilan that while she couldn't find it in her heart to kill him there were others who might not be so forgiving. Heilan left the city but the Magpies had eyes everywhere. It seemed his replacement feared Mags may yet forgive the traitor and he wanted to make sure she'd be issuing a pardon at a grave. Luckily those were not the only eyes watching him. The Guardian of the West planned to retire and was looking for someone to take his place. Because the ability to open a door anywhere and be able to escape was incredibly appealing, Heilan agreed to take the job. The prestige of his new role meant the Magpies backed down, choosing not to rock the boat, especially since it seemed unlikely the prodigal son would return.

It wasn't long before Heilan abused his power and sneaked into the palace to see Princess Sereniel. Her heart seemed heavy but his sudden appearance did not soothe it. She told him she had only submitted to him to manipulate him into letting her go, and that she never wanted to see him again. He should have known that. What had he expected? That he was in her thoughts as often as she was in his? Well, perhaps he was, but with disgust not longing. He apologised, knowing that would never be enough, and took his leave. He threw himself into his work as a Guardian but he knew he would never forget her, his memories turning sad and regretful.

Even though his situation is a lot more secure and comfortable now, old habits die hard. He quite frequently hangs on to objects that aren't strictly his, and often his partner has to remind him to put things back. Despite this few can stay mad at him as he is very sweet natured, kind and generous. He follows his partner around like an over-sized puppy, taking her lead, only offering an opinion when asked for it. As he does not talk much some think this is because he's not smart enough to think of something to say. But in truth he considers carefully before he speaks. He has already made enough mistakes for one lifetime.
