Isolde named Icarus after the Greek myth of the boy who flew too close to the sun and fell to his death when his wings melted.

The Richter-Bryson Observatory (or the RBO) was a genetic engineering and experimentation lab both funded and hidden by numerous government entities during the 1800s. They specialized in splicing human DNA with insect and animal DNA to create, or attempt to create, super human creatures. Many of their experiments failed and were eventually aborted but Icarus was one of the lucky ones, so they say.

Icarus has no idea how old he is, as he's not sure when he was sold to the RBO. He assumes he's in his early twenties but Isolde seems to think he's much older and experiencing a similar issue to herself, where they are stuck at a certain age. Isolde holds to this belief because Icarus has not aged a day in the decade since he was rescued.

He’s clearly not human, that much is obvious. He sports a set of pink wings resembling those of a dragonfly and rather prominent antennae on his forehead. He’s unsure of what exactly his DNA was spliced with but given his appearance, it’s assumed by the other members of the circus that the additional DNA was provided by a number of insects, to create an appearance similar to a faerie.

He actively tries to block out much of what was done to him while he was in the RBO.

After a failed surgery to implant additional eyes into his forehead, he was rendered blind. His implanted eyes work to a certain extent but their vision is poor, limited to just blurry shapes and muted colors. He wears cotton fabric around his damaged eyes to protect them from dirt and debris.

Icarus escaped, with Alphonse, from the Richter-Bryson Observatory in 1856 and they were subsequently rescued from the streets by Isolde in 1858. He now performs as a trapeze artist in the circus and the audience believes that his wings are just props, rather than functioning appendages of his body.

He and Margeaux despise each other. Their bickering became such a problem that Isolde has them sleep on opposite sides of the circus grounds. This became especially important after Margeaux tried to decapitate Icarus in his sleep, to which he responded by flying her a two miles into the sky...and proceeded to drop her. He caught her about ten feet from hitting the ground but only because Isolde had been yelling that he would be kicked out of the circus if she died.

While he uses masculine pronouns, and is a boy through and through, he enjoys wearing pastels, lacy dresses, and other things that are generally considered to be "feminine". This causes serious confusion for a great many patrons of the circus.
