    Paragraph Description:

Juniper was born in Polaris’ slums, and she was just a nobody. Easily overlooked and even when people did see her, they never saw anything of value or anything important. Just some dirty faced, mousy looking girl clutching onto her mother’s hand.

The pair never had enough to go around, whether that meant blankets or food. Both girls were far too thin, even with their bellies distended the way the were. June knew her mother tried her hardest, even resorted to pickpocketing when the ravenous hunger grew to be too much. The pair soon discovered that June had nimble little fingers, deft hands that were perfect for snatching wallets and food from stalls that weren’t closely watched.

Her mother worried constantly, she smoothed down June’s thin messy hair often and warned her of being careful, of never trying anything around a guard. June was only seven years old when her mom’s wrist was caught in a guard’s iron grip. Caught red-handed with the loaf of bread still in her grasp. June shrank into the shadows, hands clasped over her mouth to stop herself from crying out. Mom had always warned her to run if this happened, but she couldn’t move she was frozen watching in horror. Maybe mom would get lucky? Some of the guards were known to take advantage of pretty criminals, maybe this guy would too? Life in Polaris is never kind. Her mother was dragged away, begging for mercy, trying to plead her case about how hungry she was. June never saw her after that.

The girl was shuffled from friend of her mother's, to friend of a friend, to somebody who owes me a favor. It seemed like she lived her life a few months at a time. Nowhere was permanent, June was an inconvenience and after ten years of being just that, she’d had enough. She wouldn’t hear anymore, “I’m sorry June, I just can’t afford another mouth to feed any longer.” She wouldn’t be a burden any longer, and as she eyed the large empty house, she had no idea just how much her life would change that night.
