He was appropriate for the character and Impldoll's dark tan is gorgeous.

Born in Zanzibar, Tendaiji's adventures as a young man took him along the Swahili Coast, and eventually he joined a ship in Zheng He's fleet. Through various means, he found himself adopted by a family in Japan. When he proved himself calm and capable in battle, they gave him a major task: keeping the cursed sword Yugikiri under control. This worked, right up until Tendaiji was killed in battle and Yugikiri refused to let him go. Since then, Tendaiji has been wandering the country as an onryo, an angry ghost... or so Yugikiri would have it. Mostly, Tendaiji fishes and is everyone's cool older brother. Yugikiri spends his time complaining.

By a technicality, he's an onryo. Just a really weird one, since it's his sword's vengeful spirit that keeps him around, not his own.

Name story:

Tendaiji is a Japanese corruption of his birth name, Tendaji, a Swahili name that means "makes things happen." It's written with the kanji 天臺寺 ("heaven" + "tower" + "temple"); the surname of his adoptive family is 神詩田 ("god" + "poem" + "field.") They had high hopes for themselves, and I wanted something cool.

He's my "I love cursed swords! The Indian Ocean trade routes are cool too!" character. Personality-wise he's unusual in my group because he's very calm and tries to resolve conflicts without fighting, but is also quick to defend anyone in danger, even if he doesn't know them. He's not actually based off Yasuke, even though you'd think he would be.

He's kind of a nightmare to research, but I'm managing.
