Name story:

Madeleine is the name of a titular opera character whom, despite having many admirers and lovers, finds it difficult to find someone to accompany them on New Year's. In the end, she remains alone with a portrait of her mother; this bittersweet opera conveys the same type of loneliness Maddie gives me.

Another member in the boarding house, Maddie is among the few tenants that have lived in the boarding house for years on end. While pretty and good-natured, Maddie is often standoffish to most guests. She prefers the company of the younger children, and wishes one day to open up a daycare and nursery.

She often babysits Ellie and reads her bedtime stories. While she loves Ellie dearly, Maddie is more worried about Ellie's mother's whereabouts and often wonders when will Ellie finally leave the boarding house. Maddie also finds it concerning that Ellie still has an imaginary friend.
