Scrambling through the woods, his fingers brittle and cold, too tired to swipe away the branches clawing at his face as he makes his way through the forest. The heavy snowfall erases all traces of his passing. He bursts through the undergrowth and out into the frozen field. Stopping in his track, he sinks down on his hands and knees, his breath smoking from his mouth in ragged gasps, the snowfall muffling all sound except his heart beating, the last rays of sunlight that brushes against his face makes the snow caught in his eyelashes glitter. He blinks, and the sun is gone, darkness creeping forth, swallowing the field of frozen grass. Slowly he rises and staggers out onto the open expanse, continuing his journey.
