The son of a Welsh dragonherd, young Raffael was convicted in 1787 by an English court for the theft of two sheep (to feed his mother and brother, who'd contracted smallpox), and was initially sentenced to death. A clerical error saved his life: instead of the noose, he was shipped to the penal colony of New South Wales. Travelling on the First Fleet, Raffael found the wildness and vast space of his new home quite suited him, and upon his release set out with the explorers to find what other secrets this new land held.
On the whole, Raffael is easygoing, but this is underlined by strength and assurance and the occasional bout of wanderlust. At heart, he has a pioneer's spirit; the entire family has at some point had to rely on Raffael's sharp survival skills, attuned to the vagaries of the Australian landscape. He enjoys ruffling Gwen's feathers on a regular basis, his stoic resolve is the perfect counterbalance for her fiery spontaneity. A natural born leader, he is always the first to dive headlong into a project. When at home however, he prefers to sit in a comfy chair and do the crossword or play Squatter with his kids.
