Rowan is a warlock/sorcerer who created the forest that everyone is currently living in. While he was casting the spell, he was interrupted, causing the spell to go awry, and he wound up in a strange feedback loop from the spell. Now he's part of the forest and the forest is part of him. The forest is able to use his magic (for the purpose of protection shifting, season changing, etc.) and, in turn, the forest's life is Rowan's, granting him essentially eternal life. So long as the forest is alive, Rowan is alive. If either dies, the other goes with it.

Rowan is also very much in love with Eugenia but he stops himself from saying anything because he knows it's a doomed love. Though they'd have a long life together, he knows that Eugenia would eventually pass on and he will be left alone without her.
