Saburo is a tanuki. He often takes the form of a teenage boy so that he can learn about humans. He is quiet and shy, but don't mistake his quietness for a lack of opinion. He says what he thinks when he feels it's important enough. He loves to have fun, and is very curious. He's an excellent transformer, and can change into almost anything. He is enrolled in school in Tokyo, but he visits his parents in Kyoto when he can.

His best friend is Tomi, a fox, who he found drunk and passed out in a Tokyo side street. Being the good boy he is, he brought her home so she didn't get run over. Even though he's quite, he never lets Tomi walk all over him. And he can dish out sass just as well as she can. Tomi is the only other creature in Tokyo that knows he's not human.
