Clyde Applerye ("Shonokin" to his friends in Paragon City-) is the resin version of one of my favorite City of Heroes MMO characters; a soft-spoken gentleman-monster from the Appalachian mountains who commandeered the powers of Darkness to serve the cause of Light. His character design was loosely based on a species of human-like but inhuman creatures created by fantasy author Manly Wade Wellman in the 1940's. Madison, the shape-shifting shadow spirit, is his Familiar.

"The Shonokins were, or believed they were, a people who had been fortuitously displaced as the rightful rulers of the Americas by the arrival of the Indians. A legend that they insisted upon was that ordinary human evolution was one thing and Shonokin evolution entirely another. They hinted here and there at tokens of a long-vanished culture and power, and at a day soon to come when their birthright would return to them."
