    He looked like the character!

His sulky slouch and sad, pointed face.
    Worst Points:
No elf ears! But easily modded.
I’d been on the lookout for a sculpt for Zero since I joined the hobby. I’d done a lot of drawings of him over the years, so was pretty sure how he should look. Daydream sculpts were small, but without the chubby cheeks and big, full lips usually seen on child dolls. Ryan was perfect!

  • Name story:
Zero was found wandering alone in a war zone. He didn’t speak, and no one knew where he came from. Hence they nicknamed him Zero. Nothing. Later, as an adult, he sticks with this name.

From red earth a god has arisen,
And he does not smile benignly upon us.

Zero was found wandering in a destroyed village by a band of survivors. Despite him being half starved, filthy, barefoot, non-verbal and extremely aggressive they take the boy with them, and soon discover that all is not as it seems. In the desert, the dead don’t stay dead. The rebel army are the least of their worries now, and as they move from shelter to shelter, through burned out homes and abandoned barns, it becomes a battle for survival. And a quest for answers.

Zero is oblivious to the war. He shows no attachment to people around him. He wants only food, and has a curious fascination with the bodies that litter the roadside.

When one of the risen dead speaks, its words change everything:
“Kill it! Kill the boy! Don’t you understand? It’s not human. Kill it now, kill it while you still have the chance!”

    The boy holds secrets.
But the desert holds secrets of its own.

Zero is a peculiar thing. His favourite ‘toy’ is a red handled screwdriver - a reminder of his parents and useful for defending himself. He loves cured ham, but especially apricots. And the occasional spider.

Try to pick him up and he’ll spit and bite, or stab you with his screwdriver. He’s still in his denim shorts and t-shirt that his parents put on him. His hair is overgrown and matted. But there’s a curious, knowing look to him. He walks by himself, on sore blistered feet, until he finds the body of a little girl and steals her pink boots, too big for him but better than no shoes at all.

Although Zero doesn’t speak, he understands everything around him. His emotional scars may be worse than any physical ones, but he’s resilient, determined and stubborn. He’ll survive to spite everyone who tried to kill him.

    The boy ain’t right.
    But then, who is?

Zero features in a prequel to my Ridge novel series, “The Kid”.

Twenty years later, he turns up in the main series, all grown up and ready to unleash havoc. (Adult Zero will be an iplehouse Felix).
