A desert village lies in ruins, its inhabitabts slaughtered under the burning sun. The only survivor is a five year old child, hidden in a wall cavity by his mother and told to keep quiet and stay still, no matter what...

A year later, a group of refugees fleeing into the desert find a boy who doesn’t speak. They name him Zero, and take him with them, but something about him unnerves them. As they journey through the ruins, strange things start happening.

The dead don’t stay dead and the only one who seems to know why isn’t talking.

The desert holds secrets, but this boy has secrets of his own...

The war is a distant memory, but a new batch of strange happenings begins. Into the chaos and confusion, a man appears from nowhere, beautiful and frightening. He has no interest in saving the world, but if saving the world gets him what he wants, where’s the harm?

And so a rag-tag group of loser superheroes and soldiers begin a fight to save us all, high up in a mountain city, and with them is a boy who might be a god, the devil or a bit of both...

Zero is essentially a deity, with the temperament of a child. Neither hero nor villain, he lives for whatever makes him happy for a while. If you cross him, he’ll kill you, but if you offer him something he wants, he’s not adverse to helping you out.

Always immaculately dressed, with silver jewellery, and always carrying the red handled screwdriver he’s had since childhood, Zero wanders the worlds of the living and dead, straddling the two. It’s all a game to him.

He’s emotionally childish: very focused on the self and on here & now. He often doesn’t think about the consequences, and makes mistakes as a result. He’ll then lie about it even if it’s obvious he’s lying. He’s illiterate, and very sensitive about it but again, like a child, he’ll just make things up rather than admit he can’t read.

Eventually makes an unlikely friend in the lonely, 80 year old Beatrice. She’s a grandmotherly figure, endlessly patient and doting on the strange boy who, despite his age, is more boy than man.
