1 limited doll vs several dolls?

Mar 11, 2012

    1. I feel that it's all a matter of which you want first. If you don't really want the limited sculpt that much, why are you thinking about getting the limited?

I usually put my limiteds on layaway so that I can afford other stuff in the meantime, I know bad me lol but seriously that's really all it boils down to.

If you want them all, go for the limited first because it's limited. Limiteds on the secondhand are sometimes ridiculously priced and/or hard to find depending on how many people bought them versus how many people want them now that they've seen owner pics.

There's nothing wrong with spending your check on one big purchase as long as you'll be happy with it without regret.

    2. I don't buy limited dolls just to have limited dolls. I have to be totally in love with a sculpt to want to buy it. I've ever only wanted one limited and have wanted him for 5 years, but other than him. Nope, I don't have any LEs and don't want them.

    3. I think it really depends on how much you love the doll in question. I own plenty of standard dolls or ones that I got relatively cheap secondhand, but I also own some expensive limiteds or have paid the obscene aftermarket markup for out of production or limited dolls.

For me it really depends on what I think I'll get the most enjoyment out of. If I love a limited to death, I consider it worth the extra cost to get that instead of multiple less expensive dolls. But if I'm just so-so on the limited and am only tempted because I think I might lose my window of opportunity, then I usually go for the less expensive things.

    4. it depends on the doll i like!!!!i browse doll links and if i find a doll or doll accessories that i like i buy them no matter if its limited or not cuz lets face it if u dont buy the doll u like u always wonder and feel a strong desire to obtain it!!!!

    5. It depends if you can't live without it. In that case get the limited, but if you can't live without the body and other doll then get it. :D Hope you can understand this lol.

    6. I've never done layaway. If I haven't had the cash for a doll, I've busted out a credit card. XD

I tend to gravitate toward limited dolls, probably because they're more unique than others. And if I had a choice between a limited I really wanted and one or more regular dolls, I'd go for the limited, because I'm finding out how very difficult it is to try and find a limited later when they're not longer being produced. -_-; So now if I find a limited I really want, I'm just going for it. (*pets Frankenstein*)

    7. I'd rather have a doll i like then 3 dolls i don't *like* as much, so it depends on how much I like the limited sculpt.

If not, I rather get regular dolls.

    8. Do you save up and buy a limited doll?
No, usually if I buy a limited doll the money has to be on hand as it's limited. Either you buy now or not. I do keep an eye out for a limited that I want if it's second hand.

Do you put them on layway?
Yes, if it's limited and I don't want to throw off the household budget to get something now than later. Also layaway isn't a danger as putting it on credit card bill you can't pay at the end of the month.

Or do you skip the limited doll and buy several dolls for the same price?
This is generally bad practice as you could end up several dolls that do not make you really happy. I'd rather buy a doll I like now. I now buy what I like 2 is not always better than one. Also sometimes the doll I want is cheap why buy two if you only want the one.

How did you come to that answer?
After much trial and error and much buying. Buy the doll that you really like or not at all. If it's really beyond budget keep looking til something you like is affordable. Its what keeps te hobby long term vs just into now ;)

    9. Do you save up and buy a limited doll?
If I have the time I might try and get some money together. Thing is, they're limited so chances are you don't have long enough, which is why I always like to keep some money aside to put put down as a first payment or something because I just don't tend to have a spare $900 to hand when a company suddenly releases a limited.

Do you put them on layway?
Always. I can't afford them any other way at the moment unless I've just sold a load of dolls and my current family isn't going anywhere.

Or do you skip the limited doll and buy several dolls for the same price?
I've thought about it but I find if I really want the limited then I should get that over a few dolls that I don't REALLY like. My collection is all limiteds but one at the moment, they do tend to be pretty damn special.

How did you come to that answer?
I've come to learn that if you really want a doll, no other doll will be a good substitute. It'll end up sold and you've missed a limited you desperately wanted. Thing is with limiteds, you might as well go for it because even if it turns out to not be the doll for you, you're almost guaranteed a sale on the mp afterwards.

    10. To be honest, if I wouldn't be getting that much money to spend again for a while, I'd buy lots of dolls, if it was something like a wage, I'd probably buy a LE doll and save the next pay check for other dolls =3

    11. I just fell in love with a Volks doll and of course, he's limited and super expensive!!! ~_~ I will save up money and buy him later on...if I don't end up buying other things for my current dolls, that is. ~_~

I can't save money, that's my problem and it's not always that I have $3000 on hand just to give it away at once. Plus, I'm always LATE to buy limited dolls directly from the Company and the marketplace abuses of the limited dolls' prices, they are always sold twice or even more than their original price. >.>

Something like that happen with one 21cm Azone doll...original price was $180 but the doll was the most wanted and hard to find and the seller put him on sale for $450...I bought him just because I love the mold (even though I'm buying a new body, I don't like pure neemo bodies) I could have bought a BJD with that money but I don't regret my decision, he was the last one on the market and I love him to bits!!!

It is worthy to get something you really want even at a high price!

    12. I have no limited, so I'm saving money for the doll in full. But if I fall in love with a limited not miss the chance to buy it, in the case would have to spread the value (because it takes me joining the money). It is a matter of how much he wanted this doll in particular. If you are unsure it is best to buy another two or three in place of that, because the doll is not special in your heart.

    13. How about this (it works better if you do the first two steps before reading the last part):
1.) Get a coin and decide whether the limited or the few dolls will be heads or tails
      2.) Flip the coin

which side did you hope it would be?

    14. Do you save up and buy a limited doll?
If the doll is limited, there's usually no time to save up, so the money either has to be there or the doll is not coming home, unless the ordering period is a long one.

Do you put them on layway?
I don't use layaway to buy dolls I don't have money for at the time of purchase. I just don't like committing to a purchase without being able to afford the whole sum right there and then. However, I do use layaway to control when a doll is shipped out, as I sometimes buy more than one doll within the same time period. I'm probably one of very few people who does this (usually, folks want their dolls asap, and most of the time I do too), but I don't like multiple dolls arriving at once, so I use layaway to postpone one of the dolls, while still buying her within the ordering period. In such cases, I have the money on hand, I just pay over a time period that's convenient for me.

Or do you skip the limited doll and buy several dolls for the same price?
Over the years in the hobby, I learned that I will always prefer 'quality' over 'quantity'. That is not to say that I will always like more expensive dolls over less expensive ones (in fact, that would be positively false, as I have dolls of various prices in my collection, whom I all love equally), but that I will always go with the doll I love the most over more of dolls I like least.

For example, I adore Custom House sculpts, and, their resin and casting quality has been very good as of late. During their last mega sale, I had the option of buying about 4-5 dolls from them for the same price as the Soom Limited that was released at the same time. Ultimately, I decided to go with the Soom limited, because all things considered, I would have regretted missing out on the Soom more so than on the CH dolls. Alternatively, during CH's last year's sale, I opted to go for 2 of their dolls vs. 1 more expensive limited for the same reason - I would have been sadder to have missed out on getting those particular cheaper molds from CH than the more expensive limited. Ultimately, it all depends on what you love more at any given time.

How did you come to that answer?
I ask myself, which would I regret more - passing up on doll(s) A or doll(s) B? Even when dolls are basic, there's still a chance that a company could discontinue them before I decide to purchase, so I ask myself this question whenever I am deciding among various dolls, even if some of them are basic.

Unfortunately, I did miss out on a basic doll that was discontinued suddenly and without warning. Oftentimes, companies give fair warning, but every once in a while no warning is given at all. I'm still sad over missing out on that basic, but it taught me a valuable lesson - never take availability of basic dolls for granted and always buy what you love most.

    15. I don't really have the cash to invest in more dolls right now.
I buy a doll every few years. But if I had a good chunk of cash it would come down to 'How bad do I want this doll?"
There was a lot of times where I looked at the price of a doll and said, well gee I could get 2 dolls for that price. I used to be all about quantity rather than rarity.
I wanted a group of dolls rather than 1 really special one.
But like I said, it all comes down to what you want!
If I saw a limited I just knew I loved and would be tough to get later I would go for it! :)
I could get standard dolls anytime.

    16. I buy dolls what I really like. And prefer one good many so-so.

    17. If I love this sculpt I buy it. But I don't understand people who buy dolls only because they are limited.

    18. In this situation, I would actually walk away and not buy any dolls. The very fact that the conflict exists means that I don't like any doll enough to have it take precedence over another doll. The real "price" I pay when buying any doll, basic or limited, is missed opportunity. If I can't deal with that prospect, then I'm not ready. If I force the purchase, I'll regret it, no matter which doll I choose.

    19. I would probably choose having multiple dolls over just one. While it is nice having a limited dolly, they would get lonely and need a friend! :D
