A Change in Character

Jul 8, 2012

    1. My first doll (an MSD) was meant to be a character I'd created for him and for a long time, he was that character. However I eventually decided I wanted an SD and I wanted to make that one the character, since he was going to be the father of my MSD. I then changed the MSD into a different character. I didn't end up keeping that doll, though.

    2. This happens to me every so often, and it doesn't bother me too much. It takes me longer sometimes to find a new place for the doll in question, and to find a sculpt to replace it, but it's kind of fun for me.

      To give an example, I got an Another Secret Mr. Rabbit for my March Hare character and an Oasisdoll Alejandro for my White Rabbit. When they arrived, seeing them next to each other, it just didn't fit. I love love love my Mr. Rabbit, he was perfect for what I was going for, but my Alejandro just looked out of place. Next to Mr. Rabbit, his face looked so wide and masculine to me when I wanted a softer, more delicate, androgynous look. It was a bit disappointing, because I so love both sculpts by themselves. It took me a while of painting and repainting to decide that, yeah, Alejandro wasn't right for it... but I still love the sculpt so I found a spot for him in one of my other stories. I'm a lot happier this way, to tell the truth, and I'm glad I didn't try to force a fit or sell him in disappointment. :3

    3. I bought Lilith completely with the intention of changing her character often. I figured with so many clothing styles and wigs and eye colours available, it'd be natural. Same thing will apply if I get a boy.

      IF I can ever get enough money together (and find the right sculpts) for my two main characters though, they won't change.

    4. I actually think a lot before my first doll came. I thought i can let him be a cute boy but in the end i realize.. he don't suit the 'cute' character. So i think i should be more fashionable and change his clothes style and hair xD

    5. My original intention with Icarus was to make him into a Steam Punk styled version of the original Greek myth. ... He ended up being more like Honey from Ouran High School Host Club. Just wants to sit there in his cute clothes with bright colors and cuddle his stuffed bunny. He just... won't be Steam Punk... little brat. LOL I've got a few dolls with set personalities (hopefully they won't fight me on it) but I also have dolls that I don't have anything really in mind for. I'm hoping they'll tell me what they want.

    6. My DZ Joe Max's character is constantly evolving and changing (sometimes wildly), but as a "star system" character from the very beginning this is all pretty much expected.

      My DS W Quasar was originally supposed to be a super-sweet guy who loves stuffed animals and stuff, but when he came he ended up turning into Yuri's wise-cracking chicken-themed robot assistant. :sweat

      Aeka, my DD, probably has had the most amusing changes of them all. She's based on Aeka Shiraki from Yume Miru Kusuri so I meant for her to be really meek and shy, but in the end she turned out kind of boisterous and overly ambitious. She's still sweet and kind, but she thinks she's a gangster (Oh, Saint's Row...) and is a little bit vain and selfish. I am perfectly okay with this and am currently looking for pieces to build her "urban style." :lol:

    7. I've never had "set" characters or personalities for any of my dolls before I've gotten them, preferring to let their identities emerge as I figure out their best looks. The only exception was my DT Bei Rue, who was based off of the character from Hunger Games.

      That's not to say it doesn't take a bit of time before their personalities settle, though. My BBB Isabella Viola went through about three different hair, wardrobe and name changes before I finally figured out what a sophisticated girl she was. It was a similar story with my RS Ni Primrose, except it was just her wigs that kept changing.

    8. Absolutely!!! I end up changing things here and there as my life changes. It's really fun to reinvent doll characters and see them becoming something thats really special to you.

    9. Yep. I got my souldoll Kanguk some months ago. I had planned for him to avoid long hair, black hair and blue eyes.. But I ended up with a complete change and got him long black hair and blue eyes.. xD Though I still need to find a him a style.. He has none right now and he doesn't look like the one I planned for him

    10. i had a completely different idea about my first bjd in creating a character but as soon as i changed his outfit i felt his personality changed with it :)

    11. It happened to me today! Ever since I got Sahara's heads back from the face-up artist her sleeping face had been bothering me. It looks exactly the way I requested and the way I wanted it to look, and it's the most gorgeous you've ever seen, but somehow there was something amiss. Today it hit me: the head doesn't look like Sahara's sleeping face, it looks like a completely different character. So I guess I'll be looking for another Minifee body in the future, or she might work as the sleeping face for the Minifee Chloe I have planned in the very distant future (just because my wish list is so long and I'm flat broke, otherwise I would get her, like, yesterday ;) ). She looks so similar to her, maybe by subconscious has already started creating her...

    12. I've had my characters switch around for my Bambicrony Emilys. I don't remember how long ago it was, 2010ish? But I got down to one doll and bought one to go with him. I couldn't decide if she would be his daughter Emie, or the reincarnation of his dead love Lorina. But she ended up as the daughter, so later I bought another girl of the same mold as the reincarnation, Mariana. I wasn't happy with just the three, though, so I got a younger version of the guy and she became Lorina instead. But I still had a sleeping head that came with Lorina, and just recently found a body for her. So finally, poor Mariana is a doll of her own. XD

    13. Somewhat. I have a doll that I'd planned to be 16 and asexual. After 6 years I feel the character needs to grow, she's been in a relationship for 5 years of the time she's been with me and I feel she wants to become more of a young adult, I plan to re-shell her.

    14. I think to a degree my dolls have all changed over time as my own tastes and interests have changed. Some changes may be more subtle than others though.

    15. I just had this happen for the second time, in both cases I bought a doll to be a particular character and tried to style them as I had planned, liking how they looked but not exactly loving it. Then on a sudden whim tried out a different look (hair/eye combo, style of dress etc.) and went "hold the phone, I think this is Y, not X!" and then fully made them over. Now I love how they look and am planning in one case to get a different mold for the originally planned character, in the other case I haven't found another shell and might just skip that character.

    16. Yes. Yes it has. XD;

      I ordered a sculpt from IllusionSpirit, intending to do something specific with him. And when I swapped the factory eyes out for the pair I had readily available? He wound up becoming Cloud. Before that, I ordered an HZ GuHu with the intent of making him one of my characters. Nope. Didn't work. Ultimately said GuHu sculpt wound up with a character all of his own. XD;

    17. only two of my characters have kept their original Characters. The other two switched. Emily (BBB Pandora) was going to be an old Role Playing character of mine, but the character didn't stick and I had to rename her. The newest one Shirou (IS Minos) was going to be my shrine spirit, all peaceful and cool headed, instead he's my resident punk.

    18. One of my dolls ended up different from how I planned. I got a minifee Marica, and I was going to have her look the way her default pics look. I gave her a face-up just like the default, had a pair of brown eyes for her... but I never ended up making her lolita clothes. She just didn't seem right. So, I gave her a completely different face-up, and she's been a sort of modern beatnick with more attitude than I intended! She ends up going nude half the time, it just really suits her attitude, ha ha.

    19. I'm going through it right now, lol.

      When I first discovered BJD, I wanted an Angelregion Diana, and a sister for her, which was Volks Elena. They were originally going to be Regency period sisters (Pride and Prejudice style), but I had this sudden idea to have doll forms of the characters from my all time favourite game: Final Fantasy VIII. Diana didn't fit in this plan, so away she went. Elena (2007, such a long time ago lol) was the first of the FF8 characters, then slowly the other characters appeared, and this year they've slowly been sold off because I realise I'll never be happy with them. They will never look "perfect" or exact to me, and it just doesn't feel good to just copy someone else's idea. I love the characters dearly, but I guess because they're not mine, it makes it hard to bond with them. I guess maybe I grew up a little as well?

      My new plan is to go back to my original idea... not necessarily Regency, but probably Victorian or Georgian. One of my greatest loves is Victorian england :D I also rather love the gothic style. I'm not really a goth myself though, but I adore the style. Dollheart :aheartbea

      I'll probably keep the FF8 dolls that I put the most work into, as they were my favourite of favourite characters, well at least until I feel like they no longer belong or I need the space... then they'll go... but the others have gone and in their place a gothic victorian family will arise :whee:

      It's exciting, it almost feels like I'm discovering the hobby again, but I'm more experienced this time around, lol.

    20. Two of my dolls have changed character a bit. My first doll's character was a very immature 15 or 16 year old. She was to be honest, more than a bit of a Mary-Sue. Every other character fell for her unintentional charm. As I matured as a writer though, she evolved. She's still immature and childish but she's older now. And that charm? Well she does have it for a magical reason and it causes her problems. She's more than a pretty face but that's not how people treat her. And she's still happy-go-lucky but partially because she avoids all discussion of anything negative. Basically, she's more rounded.

      The other doll whose character has changed is Alwyn. She started life as my sister's girly girl who wore Lolita, but that didn't seem to suit her. So I bought her and started dressing her as more of a tomboy. She instantly fit in better. Her character has gotten a more dry sense of humour now and a polite but blunt manner of speaking.

      The third doll's character has stayed the same and the fourth just got here, so who knows yet how he'll change!;)
