A frank, mature discussion about doll-vaginas. (nudity)

Oct 24, 2010

    1. Firstly, let me say that I applaud both the usage of a Frank Zappa quote in this thread (done by Jonquil) and the usage of an MST 3000 image in Xanadu's signature (I'm a fan of both Frank Zappa and MST 3K). That being said, I consider myself lucky when I see or find a doll that has a slit down there! So many dolls don't even have that! I prefer to just leave my doll with a slit and use my imagination for the rest (I don't make a habit of thinking about what people's genitalia look like in general, as I tend to find both penises and vulvas relatively unattractive).

    2. Well, this conversation will never beat "Barbie" - She had a baby without a genital slit! BJD's have genitals, of a sort, and still no baby! "Barbie - 1, BJD's - 0
I just had to have a chuckle at this conversation. Since I photograph my BJD's clothed, I don't see the need to have perfectly correct genitals on them.

    3. I think of dolls as stylised, rather than hyper realistic. None of my boys have super realistic penises... They're just as stylised at the rest of their bodies. I expect girl dolls to be just a stylised. *shrug*

    4. Agreed! My poor RS girls have NOTHING. I don't need extreme detail but just a hint would make me happy. The slit is all she needs for realism to me.

    5. Personally, I'd rather just have a tiny little slit than some some weird ultrarealisic flaps and stuff. Just grosses me out. I'm not immature about it all, but I just don't need to see it. They're just dolls. But yes, I'd prefer a slit over nothing.

    6. when i had boy dolls, i would have liked it better if they didnt have their equipment.
Likewise on the girl, i dont like the slit either.

Id rather have unisex bodies all around. The torso is enough of a gender look for me. lol

    7. To be honest, the amount of people who have responded to this saying they prefer their dolls with no genitalia or that they don't find genitalia beautiful make me a bit sad! Even though I was very sheltered until I was 13/14, I grew up with a VERY open minded family. When I was young and I began learning about my body, I'm thankful that one of the first websites I found was very open about the female body and described many things as "natural" and "beautiful." I really think it had a huge impact on my sexuality and my opinions on sexes, or at least the natural aestheticism of them. It probably also helps that I am also bisexual and that I prefer the female body to the male body.

Honestly, I had never given the idea of vulvae [ thank you Google Chrome for correcting that pluralization! ] on my dolls any in-depth thought. Although I can say that I was a bit disappointed with Elodae's vulva when I received her: I noticed almost immediately that despite the level of detail and care put in to the rest of her form, her vulva was almost overly simplistic. Because of the quality put in to Dream of Doll's dolls, I was rather surprised to see the tiny, hardly-carved slit between her legs. It was almost comical, actually. However, it wasn't (and isn't) a top priority for me, so beyond the initial disappointment, I didn't give it much more thought.

Now that I am thinking about it, though... There's a very good point made in this thread. While it's true that many male doll's penises are "stylized," doll vulvae are neglected almost to the point of shame. I don't necessarily believe that dolls should have tangible hair on their genitalia, but painted hair or blushing is fine. Beyond that, it'd be nice if they at least had sculpted lips... And it would be even nicer if doll vulvae contained the same fascinating variety that vulvae in real life have. I'd love to get a doll with a clit, or a small pudge between her lips hinting that she had one. Even though it's a small detail, it adds to the realism and beauty of the doll, I think.

I also think that that level of realism in doll vulvae could really add a lot to artistically erotic and/or nude photographs. Often, it's difficult to take beautiful photos of doll bodies in a realistic way because they are so stylized. There have only been a few "naked" photo shoots that have truly impressed me, and in most of them, the dolls genitalia were hidden because they didn't fit in with the realistic aesthetic of the shoot.

... I guess what I'm getting at is that I hadn't thought about it, but it would be really nice if female dolls were a little more realistic. You've bought up a very good point with this thread!

    8. Someone might have said this already, but Doll Chateau Bella's have a somewhat detailed vagina. You can see what looks like a labia. :)

I honestly don't mind either way. My dolls are clothed most of the time, so no one usually see's my DC Bella's vagina. But I do think that a someone detailed vagina is more realistic than a slit, especially for dolls that are meant to be mature women.

    9. I kinda thought that it was reasonable to think that way, my rational part. But my irrational part is I like sculpted nipples but not detailed genitals. For some reason, without any influence from anything, I really dislike my genitals as puberty started. I like realism for my dolls (pleasantly plump) but genitals feels not exactly needed. Something, a suggestion of genitals for both male and female dolls is fine given their realism but not too realistic since the doll isn't a perfect miniature copy of humans either. I really detest pubic hair on myself and won't dream of having any on my dolls.

    10. Interesting topic! ^.^'

I'm sure it can look very nice and elegant if done right. Even just a teenie bit showing rather than simply a slit would look much more natural.
I also discovered yesterday that some companies make dolls with jointed penises now.
I guess it all comes down to how much you care about whats in your dolls underwear or how often you want to photograph them naked. I'm not against doll genitalia, I never thought it was indecent or perverted to care about at all. It ads to the realism but personally I was never worried about that stuff.
I just like doll faces and I admit I'm a bit obsessed with hands. ;)

    11. I don't own any female dolls at the moment, but I do own four boys and they all have very different genitals, from my Barbie-esque Soom Lami to my definitely not circumcized Resinsoul Mu. When I do get a female, I plan for her to be a succubus, and though I don't do nude photography, I will be a little disappointed if she doesn't have more than just a slit, just on the principle that a succubus would care about that!

    12. First of all to reply to this general... unrealistic idea that genitalia aren't beautiful or that people find them repulsive, or that... anything at all regarding that aspect of the discussion. I do speak from a rather 'professional' point of view. I'm an artist, I study in Fine Arts University and as a result have painted countless nudes of both men and women during the three years I've been here as exercise. That being said people draw nudes for a reason and that is the artistic depiction of the beauty of the human body, and I'd like to stress the fact that we don't draw people hiding their breasts, nipples or genitalia when doing that. If those parts of the human body where 'disgusting, repulsive or ugly' why include them in a portraiture of beauty in the first place. Those are my two cents.

Now, moving forward; I don't think it's unrealistic to wish that at least some artists/companies would stray from the 'norm' the slit is supposed to be and produce a different result. I've seen anything in regards to penises being done, even ones that have interchangeable parts and others with joints so they can 'move' realistically, why not improve the amount of realism on the female body? Personally I'm all for that idea and I do believe I would like a doll like that also, especially if she's meant to be a matured young lady. The amount of detail doesn't have to be excruciating or anything; just a little something to emphasize their femininity would be just fine without running the risks of being labelled as profane or being overly sexualized.

    13. What say you? are slits okay, since they are just dolls?
Um.. Yes? Perfectly okay. I honestly think it would be impractical to put time and effort into making a realistic vulva, especially since it will: A.) Nearly always be covered in clothing and B.) not be terribly visible even when the doll is naked, unless you are literally putting a camera between her legs.

is it embarrassing that our perfect, beautiful resin children are smooth and sexless? Would a vulva be ugly, or offensive?
      Not really... but uh o
n my own doll, there's really not a lot of SPACE for detail down there. She just has a very narrow piece between her legs. I don't know HOW you could put a realistic vulva on her and not ruin her mobility/shape, and what would be the point?

Another thing you have to keep in mind is that for the artists, this is a business. They need to focus their time and energy creating things that will appeal to the widest range of their customer base. Realistic vulvas that impair the mobility of the doll would make most BJD fans less likely to buy the doll and would appeal to a very limited audience.
I suppose a pear-shaped doll like the Doll Chateau girls would have more room for a detailed vulva, but most realistic sculpts wouldn't.

      ETA:
Well, my IH girl's glamour boobs look like she's supported too, but honestly I like that. I mean... 98% of the time, she's going to be wearing clothes and resin isn't exactly flexible. If her breasts hung "naturally," then 98% of the time, she'd look like she forgot to put on her bra that day, or just look weird in her rather revealing top that obviously is supporting her, and 2% of the time, she'd be looking great nude. I think giving them the supported look is intentional, so they can look right in clothing...

So they really are realistic, it's just, they're going for looking realistic while you have the doll clothed (as they expect you will most of the time) rather than realistic nude. The smaller bust sizes on iple dolls look realistic nude and can look good in clothes, though! I think the glamour boobs are intended to look very supported most of the time.

    14. I don't see why anyone would fret about the detailing of a doll's vulva when most of us don't even think much about our own. The majority of us don't buy bjds for private nude session being our never tiring model. Besides a very detailed vulva would make many of us feel uncomfortable for various reasons. Be it a transmittance of our self-conscious on privacy and/or hygiene, simply seeing our dolls sexualized more-so than needed, or for practical reasons a person's opinion is reasonable. I myself think that the only dolls that require detailed genitals are those for anatomy classes and sexual endeavors.

I, also an artist and have gone to FineArts, prefer doll genitals to be simplified. Like Soenatte, drawing nude is the norm, but it is in the students' hand what parts they wish to represent and/or ignore (cropping) unless the prof. gives specific instructions. I personally see the nude as an object, no longer a being but a form. Whether or not the genitals are there, it won't affect the overall beauty of the human body.

On the doll: It might be the convenience of fitting better in pants that the sculptors thought of having the penis removable (unlike on girls who's lack of bulge make dressing up a bit easier). I have a boy with a good sized stick for his size (goes further down than the balls). It poses a problem for dressing and sewing, and I am considering shortening his penis so the pants stops hitting a snag and making his skinny jeans look weird.

    15. My girl doll just has a small slit/indent showing where something would be if it was there, and that's enough for me. I think sculpting that is extremely detailed would make her seem almost too realistic, but nothing at all would be very barbie-ish. I'm glad she has an identifier that she is a girl (although the boobs serve that purpose too), but just a small line is enough to show that.

    16. It just seems like a harder thing to sculpt, and to be honest... Well, doll penises aren't too realistic either.
I think we just over look it, because most of us are girls...
We can look at a girl doll and be bothered by that unrealistic slit...
But, at least for me, when I look at my boys naked I'm just peachy that they have their man parts to begin with... I never even think about how detailed they are, and when I actually do... They aren't very detailed. Not at all.

I think it feels more obvious with the girls, though... It's like they finished sculpting, etched a line down there, and called it good... I'm not sure how one would sculpt a more realistic vulva, mainly because, as others have said... You're mostly just going to see a slit like that, when a woman is standing.

I think the problem with the dolls is just that the slit there looks awkward, somehow.
But some look much better than others.

    17. When I only owned yoSDs, I felt really saddened by the fact that my dolls weren't so detailed. Now I've got more MSDs than yoSDs and I really love the idea of my "adult characters" being sexual individuals. My MSDs are all over the age of 26, save for one -- he's 24 ^_^

That said, I wish my female dolls ALL had vaginal slits -- one of my dolls is FTM (female-to-male) so he's transgendered and I find myself really wanting to mod his penis off, carve him a vagina, and add a teeny tiny clitoris...Brooklyn is half-transitioned, so he's gotten his breast surgery but he still retains his vagina.

I'm FTM and the research on men's hormones has been vastly interested to me...the body does amazing things and I want to show that off in my FTM doll ^_^

Another doll of mine is kisgendered.... I was REALLY REALLY proud of the woman on the forum who got into the Gallery + last week...her Minifee El had women's breasts, and she added Muliput Clay onto her dolls' vagina to create a male's ****.

My Miha should look like that, too! I exploded with happiness over that :XD: I was worried that I'd be the only one with a hermaphrodite doll! :3

I think the BJD world is very diversified and I just love that.

I wouldn't mind having more "realistic women" BJDs at all ^_^

My MSD collection would all be very happy about that, actually! I only have 2 boys, my other Minifees are (mostly) girls ^_^

The last thing I'd like to add is I . Love. Ball-jointed Dolls...
...because they pose just like humans!

& the detail they have on their bodies!! Is so pretty!

& even the details the actual joint-hinges have are so mind-blowingly beautiful to me.
(one of my older dolls had an ankle-like joint on the ball near their foot! Limhwa, you rock!)

I think sometime in the future, BJDs can only become more beautiful...Our generation is full of artists. I'm excited about that.

Eventually, I think there will be more female BJDs with vaginal slits, yes. ^_^ Art grows.

    18. My own dolls are supposed to be what, 13 and 12 years old... So yeah, the lack of detail down here doesn't bother me personally.

But I think that detailing your doll's sex could be an awesome artistic experience. Just like with every other mod, you can express what you think is beautiful, which I think is nicer that having a factory-made genitals you might not be satisfied with.

And I can't help thinking about the dreaded "Does he have you-know-what" question that male dolls get asked so often... and how would a non-bjd person react if said doll had more realistic genitals.
Having them stylized&simplified is just a safer bet that's more comfortable with most people, I think. I would guess it's also easier to make.

    19. I prefer my dolls to not have much detail. I'm not going to go out and make nudes with them or anything. A little slit or a little sausage lump shape is perfectly fine for me :3 They stay clothed anyways. I also think it would just be a bit odd if they were too detailed since they are only dolls. If a doll is too detailed, I think they are usually classified as a sex toy. I mean, don't a lot of people that are unknown to the BJD hobby already think some BJDs are sex dolls?

    20. Out of personal taste, I wouldn't buy a doll with a detailed vagina, or, I'd buy it and probably sand it off. No disrespect meant, but I don't like that kind of stuff on a doll, just my opinion.
