A frank, mature discussion about doll-vaginas. (nudity)

Oct 24, 2010

    1. I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but Doll Chateau girls (the Kids at least) have slightly more detailed genitals. It's not enough to make a difference with clothes on or anything, but i'm pretty sure (it's been a while since i looked) that they at least have labia.

Personally, i don't care about my doll's genitals. It's fine that they have them, but i wouldn't mind if they didn't have them either. Of course, i'm not someone who takes a lot of nude dolly pics or keeps my dolls nude for any real length of time. I suppose if you were just really into keeping and photographing your dolls nude, then more detail would be the way to go, but... Yeah, not for me/

    2. I do think that slits are okay but just okay. The OP did add criteria about what they thought was the amount of detail that they were looking for and it was fairly flexible "additions would be stylized and not hyper-detailed". But that got lost along the line. I think the deeper part of the question is the thought of knowing it's there (the vulva on the doll) and the relationship of that knowledge to our perspective on the human body. That seemed to be the initial concern. What's come out is interesting. While the OP is looking for a doll to initiate a dialogue beyond representation, many definitely want the doll to hew to line of a less involved relationship. Thereby speaking directly to Dragocorn's point.

I think that people's relationships to dolls, like vulvae, come in a vast variety of shapes and sizes. Some people want realism, some fantasy and everything in-between. Personally I would prefer that my doll came with more than a slit, not some sort of pubic hair representation (which could be added via blushing) but something with a little more realism. What bothers me more is the lack of nipples on her breasts. That looks more very strange to me. Which can be helped with blushing as well but it's not the same. I don't think all dolls should come with explicit genitalia but it would be nice if more manufacturers offered a little more as an option. In any event, with blushing I can accomplish a semblance of my goals. And even with clothes on, I'll know it's there.

    3. I get what you mean. When I think about it, it does actually make me feel a bit weird, because these dolls are meant to be beautiful and perfect and its kinda like telling us that that part just isnt beautiful or perfect enough to put on the doll. I have though about it though, how male dolls have detail but females dont and I DO think that they should, at least some of them because having sexless dolls is a good thing too if you want to change its gender later. For smaller dolls its alright because there isnt much room to work with but there should be SOMETHING, and bigger dolls Ide expect to see more detail. That is a good point too, if you dont like it you can just take it off (sand it or whatever).

    4. When I first read the question, my initial answer was, "Eww, gross no way!" But I absolutely love looking at my dolls' bodies while I change them. While my current doll is just a mini, and very childish at that, I did have a bigger doll at one point. The body she was on was lacking in so many details and it just wasn't attractive. I didn't particularly like looking at her sculpting details because there really wasn't anything to look at.

I've never had anything but 'slits' for my dolls but after reading through, I thought about it some more. With mature dolls, and beautiful sculpting, I think I could appreciate something more detailed than just a thin line as long as it wasn't over the top I suppose. I think that if companies with realistic male dolls have more definition in the boy bit department, the same level of attention should be paid to the female parts as well. I think there are ways to sculpt a vulva that don't make it look unnatural or take away from the doll as a whole.

On the other hand, I'm totally against pubic hair on my dolls: I don't want it sculpted on or glued on. As far as I'm concerned they don't really need it. I've also never seen it done in a way that looked attractive. Ultimately though, I would never buy a doll based on its genitals.

    5. I know it's been a while since someone talked on here but I just feel the need to put in my thoughts. While I see nothing wrong with a simple slit I wish it was placed in a more accurate manner. Looking at pictures of so many beautiful girl bjd's it seems sad that while these talented artists can make wonderful fingers, ears, veins, and even adorable belly-buttons they can't make a well placed soft slit. Some just seem so harsh and sharp, while that is not true for all dolls. I just wish it looked more feminine.

I have no wish for anything crazy or complicated, just for all parts of the doll to get the detail they deserve. I know that these dolls can not be an exact replica of the human form, but what got my into bjd's in how close they come to being a scale model of a human, and I believe even the privates male or female need at least equal amounts of care when being sculpted. I would agree to keep it simple because as many people have said they don't care if the doll has pretty "lady parts" but a little more care would be nice.

Hope i don't get in trouble for bringing this back after no one has said anything in so long, I just think this topic is so interesting. I have been pondering it all day and I might have to go look for how different people have modded their dolls to fit what they want.

    6. OMG Peacelovedreamer and I were JUST talking about this the other day, about how I wished my dolls had more of a vagina than just a teeny slit. I'm SO happy I'm not the only one, I feel like much less of a weirdo XD

      For me, like amayabambi said, its more about placement and how they're made. I don't think I'd want a fully sculpted vagina, but just something more than just... a tiny slit that looks like it was carved into my doll with an xactor knife x_x;

    7. I just have to pop here and say : GUYS, the vagina is the HOLE! the whole outter thing is called vulva.
if you guys actually want a vagina on your dolls I'm a little worried and perhaps tempted to redirect you toward "real dolls". lol.

personnaly, I still do not care about my dolls genitalias. I don't buy them to make naked pictures, I buy them to wear pretty outfits and nice hair :) even if they had a super detailed one I'd go "woow, that sculptor had time to waste. look at all those little details it's incredible" as I unbox it, and never look at it again. *shrug*

    8. My, what an interesting topic! Reading it has certainly been enlightening with regards to the range of opinions on a subject I thought might have been straightforward.

Personally, I like it when my dolls' parts are all of a fairly similar level of detail and attention. To me, that speaks of an eye for detail on the part of the artist - which is part of what I'm paying for in the first place. Granted parts such as hands and feet are going to have a greater amount of detail than, say, knees, but that doesn't mean that knees are unimportant. I guess that rather than detail I'm looking for a doll that has an *overall* level of detail I find appealing. That goes for elbows, knees, musculature, and yeah, genitals.

    9. Seriously who cares. It's there to show the idea of genitalia that's it. It's a doll not a real personnso no more detail is needed in my opinion.

    10. Obviously someone cares; hence why this thread was made;)

I've been reading through this thread and am a little disturbed at this particular opinion, "it's a doll not a real person". How exactly is this valid? If that's your standpoint, you may as well have one of those French fashion dolls with the bean bag portion in the middle.

I never understood why it is acceptable to so many people for a doll have attention to detail in certain areas but not all. Her breasts can be meticulously sculpted, with a distinct areola and nipple, but a vulva, that is going way too far? Why is it acceptable that certain parts of the body are glossed over? Just because it's likely going to be covered up in clothing doesn't mean it should be ignored. My dolls generally don't show their rears in clothing, but that doesn't mean I don't want to see those graceful curves and those enticing dimples. Most of my dolls don't show their midsection in clothing, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the fact that she's hiding that gorgeous fit belly underneath.

I love doll nudity, one peek at my Flickr would make that pretty obvious. It's because I very much admire the female form. And I mean in its entirety; not just certain areas. I would consider it hypocritical otherwise.

Putting all of this aside, I have accepted the fact that BJD companies typically don't put any effort into a sculpted vulva, so it's not something I seek. But when I do find one, it's something to be admired, not offended by or embarrassed about. If that's the case, you may as well be ashamed of the anatomy of your own body, and if that's the case I sincerely pity you.

    11. I wouldn't mind either way, I know what vaginas look like, and they don't scare me.
Obviously not too detailed, but I would like the slit to at least be rounded out instead of just looking like a slip of the hand.
I wouldn't mind a clitoris either, as many male dolls do have the head of the penis carved out.
On the other hand, they are pretty much always hidden by clothing, so there is no real need, which is why a lot of dolls don't have nipples or detailed butts either.
However, my doll will be naked from time to time, and during that time I would like to enjoy an anatomically correct doll.
The only thing that would bother me a little would be people who do not understand too much about the doll hobby, and accuse me of having a sex doll or something of that sort. :shudder

    12. I don't really care if that particular area is detailed or not. Though I would not say the boys do not have any more detail than the girls.

Maybe there are boys out there with more detail than mine, but of the boys I have, they are nowhere NEAR being realistic looking. I wouldn't say making something in the shape of a tube represents male genitalia any more than a simple line represents female genitalia. If the boys were more realistic, then I would want the girls to be more realistic too, but I just don't find either of them to be the most realistic parts of the doll.

Also, that part isn't so important to be detailed as much as something like the arms or chest, which may be visible when the doll is dressed.

    13. As someone who's attempting to sculpt a bjd, I'm trying to take a subtle approach to the genitals partly because I'm not very familiar with sculpting genitals, and tbh, it feels a bit awkward to me. I don't have anything against people who do like more detailed genitals, but I don't see a point for my dolls since I like to keep them clothed anyway. Imo there's a big difference between the genitals and the breasts. While the genitals are obviously sex organs, the breasts aren't, despite how sexualized they are in the media. I'm both more comfortable and more familiar with breasts, and actually find them really fun to sculpt and draw, haha. In any case, I'm trying not to take a barbie doll approach, as that just looks strange. I'm trying to make the area look as natural as possible, like in some old rennaisance paintings where they would deemphasize the area without it looking strange.

    14. Oh my, are there boys out there with more detail than yours. Soom, Bishonenhouse, Volks, Iplehouse, Spiritdoll, others... have a peek down those trousers. It is enough to make any girl-doll start agitating for equal resin genitalia representation. "Hey~yyy! My Mound of Venus got short-changed!!"

    15. What say you? are slits okay, since they are just dolls? is it embarrassing that our perfect, beautiful resin children are smooth and sexless?

I actually disagree I don't think a slit is sexless just like with different people and different body shapes, a slit works perfectly for me because I actually don't have genitalia that sticks out like some girls and to me the slit reminds me of the way I look.

Would a vulva be ugly, or offensive?
      No just would be different.

    16. I have seen some of those dolls and their parts and while I can't claim that I've seen EVERY doll and that this is true for all dolls, even the more detailed boys still...are not as detailed at the real thing. Though there may be a boy out there with very detailed parts.

My thing is though, when you take a look at the rest of their bodies on some of those companies dolls, they have bodies that look so detailed that it very well mimics the real thing. Its just a doll I'm not saying it needs to be more detailed...but even though they are more detailed than the girls I personally still don't find them very realistic looking.

So I guess for me, unless I felt like I wanted a boy doll that looked like he had real genitals ( which I don't ), I am not bothered by the girls being how they are.

Though I can see how you might feel like you want more details on your girl, I think its just that there's more protruding on the male dolls, so it is easier for the person making the doll to represent the parts and add detail to them.

    17. They are still both body parts. What difference does it make what is deemed "sexual" and what isn't? If you're going to sculpt a human body, sculpt the human body.

Also, breasts aren't primary sexual organs, yes, since they don't aid in reproduction. However I would consider them secondary sexual organs since their only purpose is to provide for after the fact.

I do understand when you say you simply aren't familiar with genitals, that's probably the only valid reason I've seen so far.

    18. I agree that they could be quite beautiful if done well. I would just be wary of over-sculpting her vulva. If you need a referance on color in real life (without having to look at porn or take a picture of yourself), take a look at a conch shell.

    19. What ever floats your boat horses for courses and all that, what i am trying to say each to their own. For me i wouldn't want my girls to look that sexual, to me they are beautiful the way they are...i understand the some collectors want total realism, but its not for me as i don't display them naked...even if i did display them naked i am just not into that kind of realism to that extent.....collectors want different things from their dolls so if you want the whole muff or meat and 2 veg then its a personal choice

    20. Hrm, I guess our culture does kind of have shame for the human body, and your posts have made me realize I'm not exempt from that. I would still argue that stylized genitals don't have to be a bad thing, since dolls often have stylized ears and noses etc., but I probably should try getting out of my comfort zone sometime and trying to get some anatomical precision with the vulva.
