A frank, mature discussion about doll-vaginas. (nudity)

Oct 24, 2010

    1. The trouble is finding companies that offer detailed genital scuplts, as many don't advertise how detailed their doll's nether regions are. There's also issues of price, if the sculpt of the rest of the body is to one's liking, posability, and so on. It also does not change that the female dolls I currently have barely have vulvas to speak of.

    2. Well, there are quite a few male dolls who have boy bits that don't ... actually look the way boy bits are supposed to look, so I guess a female doll gets the same treatment. I honestly don't mind either way, most of my ladies won't be going around naked that often and when they do their vaginas will be covered one way or another.

    3. The slits kind of bother me because I can't tell if the sculptor accidently made her but crack too long

    4. While I know its a free topic to discuss and everyone has their own opinion, I feel very awkward even thinking about my girls' genitalia. I mean, while it is a beautiful thing, to be comfortable in our own bodies and such, I get uncomfortable even going to the doctors office. XD. I guess its just different for everyone, but to me I don't look down there to see if anything is sculpted nicely or not. The only time I've really thought about this topic at all is when my little boy came in and he was very... very 'largely' sculpted. haha

    5. I wanted to chime in because this is an issue with which I am personally extremely concerned. For the record a quick sample of my participation in the hobby: I love my dolls for their faces. . . I enjoy doing face-ups and photographing portraits of them. I enjoy putting together cute stylish outfits for them -- so on and so forth. Very seldom do I photograph my dolls nude for any sort of concept, usually just to be informative to other people doing research about different bodies.

Comments like these on the topic of doll genitals are what concerns me.

And another quote from the thread: "Seriously who cares. It's there to show the idea of genitalia that's it. It's a doll not a real personnso no more detail is needed in my opinion."

There are plenty of quotes here that I find refreshing. However, I think that sentiments like those I have quoted are an embrace of the gender gap which still exists in the modern era. The significance of these doll genitals is symbolically extremely important and speaks volumes on the societal views of male vs. female sexuality.

If male dolls have penises that look like they took even the slightest amount of forethought, effort, or care to render, female dolls deserve the same. And I'm not even talking labia minora. If the crudely carved slit we see in many female dolls were instead a carefully rendered and smoothed cloven mound (much more true to form than a resin cast knife incision) I wouldn't be offended! I feel that many women still suffer undue shame about their sexuality and men suffer undue ignorance about female sexuality and if issues like the quite obviously different treatments of male vs. female doll genitals is so easily overlooked then we are going to be hard pressed to make progress on the issue of sexual and gender equality.

I was really happy to see that many people here expressed the sentiment of not really caring about their female dolls' genitals until they started to read and think about it -- and then -- some of you were made uncomfortable by the unequal treatment and what that perhaps implies about the female form, sexuality, beauty standards, etc. Personally, if a doll is clothed I am not concerned about what lies underneath too much. I just feel it is the right of women to be acknowledged to the same extent which we see the male form being attended to in these dolls. And that is why I care very much, personally about our female dolls' groins.

    6. Quite the contrary: if anything, this proves that a great number of people have mentally matured to the point that they now realize physical gender does not define who or what a person is, hence closing the so-called gender gap you refer to. On the other hand, placing undue emphasis on one's genitals (in this case, using them as a defining attribute of gender) is, in fact, rather damaging towards the progress of gender equality in society today.

Granted, that places this more in the "debate" forum, but I feel it needed to be said because to be honest, your viewpoint genuinely worries me.

More on topic, there really isn't much I can say that hasn't already been mentioned. Plenty of women in real-life have an "innie" when unaroused and our dolls reflect that; to say that this is somehow "insulting" is kind of... hurtful to women that fall under this description.

Besides, no one is stopping you from modding to your heart's content. That's part of the beauty of these dolls, isn't it? ;)

    7. That's an interesting question which have to be discussed, but in fact I never thought about that before, just because I don't think it is that important.

Penis is something that can be used in photos because it's external so it is used to show emotions or one day I saw a pic of a doll waking up in the morning and you could see that this doll was a male, like, clearly.

      Well.

I wouldn't want my pure and virginal female doll to have a really detailed vaginas because I don't want her to be that real, she is a piece of my imagination so she doesn't have to look real.
For me, it would really be a waste of time.
And as these dolls are made in Asia, which has less "porn" medias than Europe or America (just watch any music clip and compare) in my opinion it is just that sexuality is still something private and secret and everything... And women's sex is still something hidden and mysterious, so doesn't have to be detailed on dolls.

And finally, it would be really really insane to sculp detailed vaginas on immature dolls, honestly Y.Y (let's make hentai stopmotions o/)

    8. Hm, well honestly, your well phrased response does not make your ideas at all worrisome to me! I feel my view on this is valid, and I feel that one like yours is as well. I am only bothered when people remark carelessly that it's in no way important without seeming to have given the idea of this anatomy any thought.

Obviously, yes, it is quite mature in a way to be able to see the gendered bits of the dolls being unimportant. And for me -- it's not as though I lose any sleep over what my doll's privates look like! I see them nude so little sometimes it's hard to really remember.

I'd also like to point out for the record that I did not mean to imply that female dolls needed to have detailed genitalia or anything other than an "innie" as you described. I would just appreciate it if this "innie" didn't look like it was literally cut into her crotch as the quick and final gesture of finishing the doll! Literally all I would like to be seeing on dolls is just a crack that looks like it was actually sculpted instead of just drawn on with a knife!

So what I would like to ask you is why are you worried that I am concerned when people don't stop and look at the differences in male and female dolls and just consider what this might imply? That lack of contemplation is what worries me. In the end I don't care at all whether people want a doll's bits to look one way or another, I don't care if they mod or don't mod them. I just am bothered when people don't look at the greater picture. Does this make sense?

    9. ......WHAAAT? I'm sorry but this just isn't true. And let me tell you, I know because I am a hentai enthusiast. (Of course, "hentai" isn't the proper term, but it's the term people recognize.) I'm especially disturbed at the "music clip" comment, as if that has any relevance. I truly hope you are not basing your assumption purely on this, but either way, yeah this isn't true.

Would it be going to far to encourage owners to post a photo of a doll's vulva that they are impressed with? I'm really interested to see some of the more "completely rendered" sculpts out there.

    10. Venetica, I'd be happy to take a picture of the Adult Doll Chateau girl's vulva -- it is the only one on a larger girl doll I have personally found to be more fully rendered looking so far. :)And I remember seeing that somebody had mentioned the DC ladies earlier in the thread.

    11. I don't have pictures, but Dollstown dolls have lovely vulvae- vulva's... whatever the plural is. They are not disturbingly detailed, but it is actually sculpted and so it has definition. One of their 13y girl body's company photo's shows what I mean (http://dollstown.com/13yrs-girl-body.html).
That's really all the detail that a doll needs, I think. Just a little definition, faking the idea that there is flesh and fat underneath the skin.

    12. The leeke art body actually has quite a nice, realistic looking vulva - it was the first thing that struck me when I opened her, since the nether regions on BJDs tend to be pretty nondescript. I don't have a picture, but you can vaguely see it in the company body photos here
It's not overly detailed, but it is sculpted, and it looks realistic, and that is more than you can say for most BJDs out there. It may also seem, from the company photos, like the bigger leeke girls has a sculpted, more realistic vag too, but I don't own any of them and couldn't guarantee it.

    13. Somehow, I feel like there's a misunderstanding as far as what the "genital area" consists of. When standing, it is true the inner labia and clitoris are hidden, but what about the pubic mound and visible outer workings? The female body isn't just flat from the waist down. I quite like how the 13yr girl body is sculpted. I don't need pubic hair and the internal workings, I would be satisfied if they just added the pubic mound.

It makes me sad to see the slit my girl has. It's so jarring. Nudity isn't sexual until you make it that way. I'd just like things to look normal down there, no matter the age of the doll.

    14. I think it's fine if people want more detailed 'bits.' Some boys even have veins down there, so why not?
Personally I would feel very uncomfortable with it, but I feel very uncomfortable when faced with any gender bits -- sculpted breasts, penises, nipples, vaginal markings, any of it. I used to not, but eh, things happen in life, and anything gender/sex related is now the kind of thing I like to stay away from. The more detailed the get, the farther I run off. So for me, absolutely no vulva detail. Not even the rough line.

    15. I never really thought about it until I read this thread, and now I do wonder why so much detail goes into a doll's breasts but not the genitals. I don't have a male doll yet,so I can't compare the details in the genitalia but it does bother me to think that a male doll's bits would be sculpted more realistically than the female's.
I personally don't want graphic genitals on any of my dolls, but I can't help being bothered that male parts are somehow more significant than female genitals. I think I understand what AlisonVonderland is trying to say about that.

    16. What say you? are slits okay, since they are just dolls? is it embarrassing that our perfect, beautiful resin children are smooth and sexless? Would a vulva be ugly, or offensive?

I think slits are fine, but they still are kind of weird to me. I don't think it's embarrassing. I think it might be ugly. I'm also not a fan of genitalia of any kind. The only genitalia that I like is my husband's. To clear that up...I don't like to look at lady or man bits. There's nothing super appealing for me, unless you are the person I love. Again, they are just dolls. Breasts might be paid attention more because it's the real way to tell a male doll from female. Who knows. I also like boobs more. lol

do you hold dolls as realistic or stylized? If so, how does that effect you, knowing they are based off the perceptions of our bodies.

I hold them to be stylized. It doesn't do anything to me at all. Even some male dolls penises aren't super detailed. They are perceptions of our bodies, they're not trying to be realistic if they were I'm sure they would be. I've seen...a male doll...who's penis is very detailed. He can even have an erection. To me this is weird. I do not want my dolls to be realistic. They are dolls. Things to play with in my eyes. It's not like they are a nude sculpture to be ooed and awed and to be put in a case. Hey, if that's what you do then it seems perfectly legit to have a doll more realistic. They aren't even used to be anatomically correct. I mean as in...how the lower portion even connects with the legs and how just the pubic area sticks out. I don't know if I can explain that very well. I feel like sculpting something such as genitalia can be a waste of time for companies. It's also like cartoons. There are some styles where clearly the males...could not have a penis. Females also usually have more focus on boobs and don't emphasize vulva's. Some illustrated styles are more realistic and do. It just matters what your taste is. I think it really is just up to preference.

Maybe doll companies are worried they might offend someone purchasing their dolls? Who knows. But if someone wants their dolls genitalia to be more realistic more power to them. If they like it or want it then go for it. It's just not my cup of tea. I'm also like this when it comes to dolls and muscle veins showing. It creeps me out. It's too realistic. Same with pubic hair. Actually...I don't like hair that much either. xD So...my real life preference kind of reflects what I like in dolls too. I just like my dolls to be dolls. Simple.

I've actually had this thought before. So it's nice to see a discussion I never noticed before. My husband saw me looking at bodies one day and he was creeped out that the male dolls had little penises. And I think why some people are freaked by it is the same basic way some people don't like 3D models of humans. The closer you get to making something more human-like the more freaked they get/more they want to reject. And I can not remember the proper name for the life of me! Anywho, cool topic.

    17. I think it's called uncanny-valley.

    18. I prefer barbie anyway, no nips or anything else. They just interfere with clothing haha. I'm not interested in realism, I just want them to look pretty in clothing.

    19. I could understand if this was done for SD & larger sized dolls.. especially the ones that have very voluptuous forms, but I think it should be an option.

I have MSD & YOSD sized dolls.. so I don't want them super detailed, but I don't want them to look like Barbies below the wait. Not from shame or anything, but for me I think I would opt not to buy a smaller sized doll like that.

My girls are fashion hogs & keep their panties on ;)

    20. That's what's called yes. I agree with the people who say my dolls are meant to be dolls nothing more. I don't mind weird anime like proportions or lack of details down there.
