A frank, mature discussion about doll-vaginas. (nudity)

Oct 24, 2010

    1. I think something a little more realistic would be interesting. They just look too simple as slits.

    2. My BBB Mei came with a delicate slit, but Sprite came with a crude, wound looking cut that made me whince and feel sorry for her. I decided right away that I'd sand her pelvic area down to get more of a shape to the hips rather than a smooth chunk, and while I did so I also made her a crotch slit and a hint of labia minora peeking from underneath. I still haven't finished blushing either of the girl's private parts, but I'm planning to give them a slight dorsal stripe (they're fae) and a little tuft at the tailbone, so adding a tuft or bush in the front will be easy at the same time. I think that the least we can do is give women of all ages a hint of accuracy concerning how they can look, how they could mature to look and how others can look. In many parts of the world, girls have no idea of what's normal - especially when they start to change and aren't allowed to talk about it, read about it, hear about it or ask about it. Boys of all ages learn that it's okay to show bulge - at least from media and surroundings if not spoken of - when girls are taught to avoid "camel toe" from an early age, and cover up properly so nothing can be guessed of something else than a smooth, plain Barbie pelvic area. I'm not saying that we should show off our Map of Tasmania and Down Under, but pretending like it's nothing there and everything else is a sin is harmful and stupid. The least we can do is stop being appalled by age-appropriate (even if simplified) vulvas. Rant over.

    3. I'm fine with a reasonable slit. Definitely over the smooth nothingness some dolls have. But realistic genitalia would kind of weird me out. I'm all for details but I've never seen a doll with an anus either....well, resin anyways. I've seen plenty of silicone ones.

But frankly I just wouldn't want people to ask me "Why is she anatomically correct?" down there and the rest of her is stylized. It draws a certain amount of awkward attention to itself that isn't needed. Unless everything on the doll is hyper realistic just focusing on one aspect just doesn't feel right.

    4. I prefer Barbie-esque detail down there. I think anything more would be... awkward if family members saw >_<

    5. My Dollstown Mari has a pretty realistic vulva. On the other hand, my Lusis has one of those afterthought-looking vulvas.

I'm not sure if this is the case, but I'm a sculpting major and I found that a lot of artists in my class and older are uncomfortable putting so much detail into it, which is a shame when breasts and other parts of the body are so well done!

    6. I'm all for realism on dolls on every detail! I don't understand why penis are realistic on BJDs, with little veins and all and vaginas are just the slit.
I own those 1/6 seamless Phicen girls (made of silicon) and its amazing that they are so anatomically correct, I wish resin BJD were too.

    7. I think that realistic genitalia would be awesome specially if painted well. The art behind it would be what impress me the most.

    8. I kind of feel the same! I want my dolls to not look like people.

    9. I don't find genitals, male or female, to be particularly attractive nor do I have a burning desire to own something with highly detailed junk sculpting just because. That being said, I do dislike the discrepancy of having a near realistic doll everywhere except one spot. It's just bad artistically speaking. If the doll is highly detailed than that should extend to the whole doll, including to naughty bits.

    10. I agree with some of whats been posted here. I do think the option to have something more realistic could be quite fun, depending on how realistic maybe they could add a small fee?
Those people who doesn't care about a proper vulva or penis could just order regular. Then again- to add price for something like that seem a bit weird.. Maybe just a general option then.
I don't know- either way I don't think it would be a bad idea, it would make it (the doll) more personal :)

    11. My preference would really depend on the specific doll and their age and personality. On some dolls, having anything too realistic would feel very awkward to me. But on others, I think it could be very beautiful to have a realistically detailed vulva.

I have seen a few very nicely done, and even cute mods of doll vulvas.

I don't really think it would be that much of a stretch to see a company create such a doll mold... if it was seen as in demand or something to make a profit on, I'm sure they would be making all varieties of artistically, realistically, and even unrealistically detailed vulvas!

    12. I must be old fashioned. I don't want more detailing on my male or female dolls' genitalia. I saw some bjd girls while doing a random search, which had open slits, with exposed clitoris and pubes, with the details painted realistically. It embarrassed me to see them and I quickly moved on. It was akin to suddenly coming upon some unexpected porn.

I don't really project any sexuality onto my dolls, actually. They are all sort of innocent in my eyes. I'm far from innocent myself, so it's not that I'm a prude. I just don't see my dolls as sexual objects.
Besides, my dolls rarely sit around nude unless being fitted for a new outfit, so what's the point?

    13. Personally I don't really care about my own dolls' genitalia. Vaginas are just slits and penises are just sticks, I don't have an opinion towards them.

Though I do think it would be interesting to see more correct dolls, maybe having the option to have less or more realistic parts when ordering? I myself probably wouldn't order the more realistic type but for those who want it, it's there. These dolls are supposed to be more correct than barbies after all, not to mention bjds even in the simplest form are a type of art.

ParlourGoddess um it's not porn and genitalia is not sexuality. It's part of every human body including yours. Human children have genitalia, are you saying they aren't innocent just because they have private parts that every other human on earth has? Or that the beautiful statues and paintings of Leonardo and Michelangelo's times were porn? Just want some clarification on why you view a simple body part that way.

    14. Dragoncorn, your question and the resultant discussion are fascinating. I think that, globally, we've learned either to shame bodies or to pretend that genitalia does not exist. There are very few cultures that embrace (or, for that matter, remain indifferent) to the naked anatomy -- whether or not that anatomy is subjectively "perfect". What we find acceptable in representation is more a factor of how we were socialized. If we would rather pretend that we have no anatomy, then no anatomy on our dolls is fine. I agree that a great deal of shaming goes on. An award winning sport team has been shamed within the past year or two because their sport gear showed their "camel toes" -- and some misguided underwear company has made underwear with padding at the bottom -- so that the evil "camel toe" does not show. Collectively -- as a species -- isn't it well past time that we grew up and dealt with it? Females and males are different. Neither is better. We need those parts for a reason. No big deal!

When I want an object of art, I prefer the realism. Dollshe's 28m dolls are amazingly detailed, down to the veins on the penis. There isn't much of a scrotum, but the illusion is there. As a seamstress, I will also freely admit that the penis makes dressing the guys a challenge - since they trim neither to the right nor to the left! That having been said, I prefer my male dolls WITH genitalia, not without. (Poor Ken, eh?) Now I'll have to check my Amanda Beauty -- but although her breasts are realistic, I seem to remember that her vaginal area is not. My Bishonen House guys are on the more realistic side, although there is more of a sense that they are caricatures.

Your topic was thought provoking. Thank you!

    15. I think this topic is really interesting. When I started collecting BJDs it was often MSD-SD sized dolls, between the age of 15 to 30. I didn't mind these to have a genitals because it felt normal. Here the legal age to have sex is 15, so they were all of legal age so to speak.

But I have gone down in size because I found out I absolutely love tinies. They are so easy to bring with you and cute and fun. But the fact that some have genitalia does bother me. It doesn't give my story anything that my 6 year old character have a penis. I've tried to see it as normal, it's part of a human to have genitale and I don't see it as anything wrong in that way, but it still feels so unnecessary because they are in fact children.
I don't mind genitalia on realistic dolls, but I find that the dolls I have aren't always realistic and the genital is just unnecessary.

    16. I don't think a vulva would be ugly or offensive, I just think the makers may have gone for a more perfect look (a generalized ideal of perfection). I don't necessarily agree with it, but a simple slit may indicate perfection in both of the lips. It could also be that the part may easily be damaged given its location. I do love the ideal of dolls have them tho!

    17. Personally I dont care much for the genital details. It's appreciated considering barbies. Nice to see dolls with genitals. But I wouldn't have it be my deciding factor when purchasing a doll. However, They should give it as an option to those who would want it. But then I question if it's even possible. From what I've seen in most dolls. The legs take up a lot of space in the joints leading to the lower torso. Perhaps they cannot place such detail in that area from fear of it breaking? I'm no sculpter, but I would fear the... "wings" of the genitals breaking off during the casting process. But this is all speculation. I'd have to ask the actual artist to know. Could just be up to their opinion in the end.

    18. It would be interesting to see more variety and I imagine it would depend on the sculptor. Some of the penis/scrote parts are also pretty crudely done, as folks have said :sweat but definitely not to the degree that the vulvas are. Sometimes it almost seems like the artist just wanted to get that bit done as quickly as possible or it's just there because people expect it, as opposed to the more, err, lovingly-rendered ones. Like someone else mentioned up there, I'd also worry a bit about little delicate parts in that area breaking or chipping, there's a lot of potential wear and tear down there from moving the legs.

There's nothing inherently naughty about those parts, they can be framed that way of course but mostly they're just there. A big penis is just a big penis, big breasts are just big breasts, prominent outer labia are just that, people have parts that are wildly variant shapes and sizes, it makes sense that anatomically correct dolls from as many companies as there are now might have that kind of variety as well. The mystique that surrounds that sort of thing is kind of funny, if someone is just chilling somewhere while in the possession of genitals it's more about the perception of the beholder. With dolls, some are more into minimalist or stylized stuff and others are more into making things as realistic as possible, both have their place.

Ultimately I suppose if someone was uncomfortable with a higher level of detail they could just have the doll modded to be less so? It seems like a subtractive mod would be easier for a customizer than trying to add something more detailed if one didn't have the skills to do that.

    19. Miyazaki I think like you. For the "older" bjd I don't mind.
The realistic side could be great, sometimes it make me laugh because it's seem not right for the size or the "cheeto" side like Rive said haha.
But for the younger bjd it's a little odd for me... I understand that it's for realism but still I feel like it's unnecessary.

    20. As personal preference, I prefer more neuter dolls. I'm generally more fond of super stylized monster and anthro sculpts though, so that's likely a part of it. It does make me chuckle a bit when I see an anthro sculpt with genitals of any degree instead of just smooth resin (the part that makes me chuckle as that they are usually cats and my first thought is just "oh! a kitty choochie"). But overall I'm indifferent. It wouldn't really bother me much if I had a more detailed doll, I usually keep mine clothed anyway so I have no need to fear family questioning me.

I have noticed the fact that more detailed penises are more readily accepted and made so I do think that putting the effort into making the ratio more equal would be a nice endeavor. Of course as people have pointed out there are the logistics of making one of those super-realistic dolls since it is a small area to work with, but even if there was more of an effort to even stylistically render the vulva in a way that wasn't an afterthought would be a step in the right direction.
It's not my preferred aesthetic, it's more a matter of principle.
