1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

A Male Dominated Dollfie World?

Jul 6, 2010

    1. I find this discussion very interesting, as I only have female sculpts, two of which are fantasy w/extra parts and differently colored resin). I have never really noticed a shortage of female sculpts, but I do feel that most of the sculpts I see released in a dark skin tend to be male. In anime, you see a lot of men collecting female figurines, and very few men collecting male figurines (even of characters that are usually popular with the male fanbase). I think the majority (though definitely not all) of all collectors are female, and therefore, it's natural that there may be a larger amount of people collecting male dolls. And the doll hobby adjusted to that. However, I believe that female dolls have a much wider variation in clothing and accessory options.

    2. I think the OP is wrong. It's not male-dominated. Everyone always grouses when a dolls is released that they are not interested in. Just get over it, I say!

I happen to like male dolls. I also like female dolls. So I don't notice these things at all. There are a TON of different dolls being made. Just because they do not all cater to one person's desire doesn't mean something is dominated!

It is human nature to notice the dolls that DON'T cater to you... For instance, I like male dolls slightly more than female dolls and it sometimes feels to me that there are WAY too many female dolls and fluffy dresses and all that. But I know that it is just my emotions, not reality.

The doll world has had 99.9% female dolls for EVER. BJDs is one of the very few places where people can actually get a decent amount of male dolls and things for male dolls. And it is by no means DOMINATED by male dolls.

Anyway--it is up to the market. That means BUYERS. If the buyers stopped buying male dolls, then there would be few made. Obviously there's a market for male bjds. But lets get real. There are plenty of female bjds! I know of many buyers who prefer girls and they seem to find enough to happily buy. Most complain about not being able to find the right males for them, rather than the other way around, so I don't think this can be a big problem...!

And if it IS a problem for some people, too bad! :D I like male bjds!!! I'm buying a lot of 'em and I'd totally encourage doll companies to keep making them! And I've never had a problem finding female bjds I've wanted, so it's never seemed to be an issue for me.

    3. The only thing I get disappointed about is the fact that a lot of the amazing fantasy parts are all made for male dolls (not saying that there aren't interesting fantasy females out there of course). I think that a few companies do a great job with incorporating this into both genders though, Withdoll being a prime example. I looooove armor for my dolls, and it's a breath of a fresh air to see a company that makes detailed, full armor for their female sculpts instead of just their male.

Other than that it's not too much of a problem for me. I very rarely see a male doll that captures my heart anyway (the ones that do are all from one company, so that's not a problem!) and I don't have a problem finding females that I like. I think it all just depends on the buyer and the company. I think some companies prefer making males because it may be easier for them, and some prefer making females, it just depends on the sculptor/designer!

    4. In terms of clothes, It can be extremely hard to find outfits for males which aren't modern/urban styled. XD I honestly can't count how many months I've followed my favorite companies waiting for them to release anything other than dresses! Many of those dresses are fantastic and would be soooo perfect if they had male counterparts too. I cry deep inside every time. Every single time. ;___; And don't even get me started on Etsy or the MP, lol.... :P

As for sculpts, I honestly haven't really noticed a male dominated world. I see genders being distributed pretty equally amongst the hobby in all sorts of styles. It's mostly with accessories and articles of clothing where it may get harder to shop for one gender over the other depending on what you are looking for.

    5. If BJDs as a hobby are "dominated" by anything, it's Yaoi Fangirls.

    6. I see more females, really. I perfer the males, and it's harder for me to find a female that is a MUST HAVE. Soom's Beauty was one, but I had to miss her. But I got Agate, and hoping she can be made just as pretty. I have roughly 10-15 females with 60ish or so males. Even the genderless ones, if they're presented as males or females, I can't see them as the other sex! Some females can be made into males, but for me, I can't do it.

    7. Honestly I find most of the male dolls prettier than the female dolls, but I must say I agree with you. There are so many more male dolls released than female. I'm pretty new to this hobby, but I look around at dolls that I wish I could add to my family. In all my endless nights of painful yearning, I see the cutest boys but never that many women.

"Iplehouse" is the worst I have ever seen though. When I look through the E.I.D section there is such an overload of chiseled men but no women. I think a few new female dolls need to be released.

      @Rosslyn
Oh my goodness. I have to agree. I remember a couple of girls in high school that I can almost guarantee are into this hobby.

    8. I actually think female dolls are far more popular than male dolls. so I think a lot of companies might try attract more people to buy their male dolls by offering other extra things with them that female dolls don't have.
