A Male Dominated Dollfie World?

Jul 6, 2010

    1. I'm not really bothered buy it. Mostly I'm curious about it. True, I tend to gravitate more towards male dolls than female but maybe that's because I'm a girl or I'm just more into the male dolls. I can't really say for sure, but I guess male ones are easier to make or something like that. or it's a female based market and they make male dolls more so girls can swoon over them. It's just a theroy though.

    2. i collect both male and female dolls. there are some stunning female dolls on the market. i think the market is pretty well-balanced. i seem to find what i seek when i have a wad of cash in my pocket (how seldom that is!) male or female. i am an equal opportunity spender!!!

    3. You would be wrong. In fact, I could make her look tough just by putting her in different clothes and lighting her differently. You'd be surprised how different I can make a Yukino look. For example, Aoi (DDH-02) is the tsundere sculpt, pissed off, scowling. And Yukino looks like she's daydreaming. Or whatever. Here's my Yukino-type looking very ticked.

BTW my inspiration for this ad mashup was Natalie Portman's skit on SNL where she did a particularly foul-mouthed rap. For some reason that picture of Yumiko-tan just had that kind of attitude.

    4. Dollcumentary- for me, it's the tiny "o" mouth on Sasara which I think "sets" her expression to a very limited range. I've seen Dollfie Dreams that have all sorts of moods and looks, but when a mouth is sculpted into a very specific shape it limits what you can do with it.

    5. I wish companies would even out the products I definitely prefer girl dolls sometimes it's harder to get extra parts as many people have said, and sometimes clothing.

    6. I tend to like male dolls better, and here's why: many of them are gorgeous. Can we say I experience a bit of wishful thinking when it comes to this? Definitely.
However, I do experience a lot of frustration when I'm looking for a female model. I like to create stories with my dolls, and build an entire cast of characters, so when it comes time to look for a girl (because one-gender stories are no fun) I find it extremely difficult to find models that I like. However, I don't think the problem is so much that there aren't any girl models, just that they tend not to be as pretty as the boys. I would agree that in general perhaps more time or detail is put into the boys, resulting in truly lovely dolls, and that (in many cases) the girls just can't compare.
But this can be easily remedied by placing a boy's head on a girl's body, if you like a certain head and wish it was female.
So while I understand the issue, I think it's usually pretty easy to get around, and still enjoy the BJD world to the fullest! :)

    7. I honesty haven't noticed this. It may just be because I'm one of those who much prefers the boys (I've been know to say that a sculpt would be better as a boy) but to me it seems that companies prefer girls. Mostly in clothing, that companies have more girl clothes than boy clothes. But as many people have said, there's a higher demand for boys.

    8. As someone who loves LUTS dolls, they're definitely guilty of this. When I went looking for a sculpt to be the sister of one of my SSDFs, I had to get her much, much shorter than I wanted because there are no girls in that size yet and then had to choose from a much smaller pool of SDF girls because there just aren't that many. Then there's the fact that there are three boy bodies in that size, but only one girl body. Or none, in several of their other sizes.

I always assumed it was because there was more of a demand for boys, but I don't know. It's disappointing that a lot of my boys have more advanced bodies just because LUTS pays for them to be re-sculpted again and again while ignoring the girls.

    9. I don't know, one could argue that in different places at different times there were different physical characteristics that helped with survival. It is of course subject to social factors as well, which may shape ideals according to a culture. Of course it is a debatable theory as well (what isn't? :D).

It serves to note that while I only truly dig the male dolls, and most do represent the male ideal in that they're muscled, handsome, and proportionate. Yet, I long for a body for them with chest fuzz, facial hair, and a bit of weight on them, as that's my ideal. There is something to be said for personal preference as it may slide against the norm. XD

    10. I think that the main reason that I ordered two males as my first dolls is because I was really intrigued by the fact that someone actually put effort into making a male doll.

When people think of dolls, usually girls come to mind..so this is really new to me to see actual masculine male dolls. I mean, Ken is great when you're five but seriously. I am buying a girl next..I love girl BJDs because they are so beautiful.

I'm in it for the realism these dolls can have. I love the idea that I could make them look just like miniature people..instead of a lifeless plastic figurine.

So, back OT..I do know that the community is male dominated but I think a lot of it has to do with male dolls being so obsolete in stores, etc. At least..here.

    11. I just want to say I love the thoughts being discussed in this thread! But as for anything I really have to add, while I feel I can't comment on whether it's something the companies themselves think or do, I do notice that doll owners *themselves* sometimes don't appreciate the female sculpts. I've been windowshopping for a body for my floating Nanuri head, looking for CP girls on the secondhand market, and I have yet to find one that hasn't been kind of mutilated. :C I just feel like I see a lot of female-to-male mods, but I never feel like I see male bodies undergoing the same kind of, er, surgey... I am aware that is not the case by a long shot, because I've seen some really cool androgyny mods in my time, but I find the way female bodies get treated sometimes a little disturbing to be honest. xC

(If it's of any relevance, my doll family is mostly ladies, with two boys, one of whom oddly was originally going to be androgynous xD)

    12. 90% of my original characters are male... but I am a homosexual male, myself. Females usually make me uncomfortable. I recently bought a girl doll with the intent to mod her into a male... but when I saw her I fell in love with her and now I prefer her.

In terms of male dominated... I really don't see it. Most of the images and clothes I see are of/for female dolls.

    13. I'm a girl myself, and while I think many of the male dolls are great looking, I prefer having female dolls myself. I might get a male eventually, but my next couple of dolls, if I get more than one, will probably be female.

I'm not sure exactly why, it's not because I have to see myself in my dolls. I just like the female shape, and dressing them and making characters for them. In roleplay, I mainl play female characters as well, and I guess I see a doll a bit like making a character for roleplay.

It doesn't surprise me, that a hobby that seem dominated by females, have a lot of male dolls though. there is a certain aspect of fantasy in it, and I think people use them to create those fantasies. I'm not saying that it's about being attracted to your dolls in any way, but rather that it's about creating "perfect" characters, because you have no control over how people are irl.

    14. That's really disturbing, to have so much hatred for any representation of a female...

I'm frankly disappointed when a company only has male dolls. It kind of turns me off buying from them even when I'm looking for a male doll for a new character doll. I'm might still buy if the sculpt is close to the character's but they go to the bottom of my list- I will look at other companies first that have both gender dolls.

    15. I have noticed this. But it does not bother me as much, since I prefer male dolls to female ones. I guess it must be a little harder for someone who only buys female dolls. But really, some males look so feminine you could buy a female body with a male head and you couldn't tell the difference. I guess that is a plus. :)

    16. I mostly collect male dolls (I only have 3 females out of around 20 something dolls) but a lot of that is actually due to the fact that I don't find the overly feminine faces of female dolls that attractive. I'm not really attracted to tiny mouths or huge lips or huge eyes. 2 of my 3 females use male heads.

I like that some companies will release females with facial structure, but oftentimes this will result in an outcry of 'she looks like a man'. I think most sculpts can go either way and would actually be happier if it was more accepted for female sculpts to appear as if they had bones. I'm a huge fan of facial structure and feel that not many female dolls have any or it's softened too much.

I know I'm in the minority with that viewpoint, since a lot of people seem to be convinced any girl with facial structure looks manly (Soom's Mecha Angel females and the Super Gems Dia and Olivine come to mind). I just think it would help if more of the doll community would allow for more variation in female sculpts.

    17. i was under the assumption since i've known about BJDs that most people want male dolls. Most people i've seen with multiple dolls have more males than females. So it never struck me as odd to see companies catering to male dolls. It's what's in demand i suppose. I personally like female dolls more. I have more fun dressing them and picking out wigs for them :)

    18. While I personally happen to prefer male dolls I do not think doll companies on a whole prefer or produce more male dolls. Certain companies may produce more male dolls, however there are companies that focus primarily on female dolls as well. I purchase primarily from Luts and Luts does seem to lean more heavily towards male dolls which may be why I favor them. However I have found searching for sculpts outside of Luts frustrating as I encounter many companies for whom the male line seem to be an afterthought if they exist at all. Clothes are also far easier to come by in a wider range of styles for the girl doll (or I suppose the male cross dresser). I own only one female doll and she is a tiny, my hubby who also collects only collects male dolls as well. For me I think it has to do with not being a typical girly girl. I am not in the least interested in dresses, lace and frills. I am also attracted to the male body. I did not play with dolls as a child. If it was simply a matter of playing with dolls now I would not be a collector. I use these dolls to further interact with characters from the stories I write. I find it hard to write and connect with female characters and so the majority of my characters are male. I have to have a strong attachment to a particular character to wish to develop the character in doll form and so far all of those characters save Amaryllis have been male. That is just me though, I don't think it has anything to do with the larger community as a whole. It certainly has nothing to do with even my husbands reasons for collecting male vs female BJD's. He enjoys yaoi to an extent but also enjoys the aesthetic of male BJD's. He has just never seen a female BJD he was attracted to. Our oldest son has a BJD rabbit who he insists is a girl and whom he dresses in the frilliest dresses he can find to fit her. To each their own. It certainly makes him happy.

    19. Actually it depends on the size, which I find funny most people don't notice this. If the doll is 1/4 size or lower, the sculpts the company puts out tend to be female. It's the larger size dolls that end up being male. Good example, the first EID sculpts released were male *but* the first JID sculpts were female. If Volks releases an SDC or MSD the chances of it being female is greater than being male. Dollzone has far more mini girl sculpts that are put in the female range, than males. However, when it comes to larger dolls they do tend to be more male. Aria dolls mini size is all female, where they're 16 years and up is all male. However, this doesn't always ring true. Peakswoods makes absolutely no male SD dolls. NotDoll tends to favor Females. Anyway, for the most part it is a size issue. As for Soom, since it was mentioned, Soom does put a lot of male sculpts or male looking sculpts out, but the entire Rosette school of dolls line is female. Again size matters =/

    20. I've noticed that MSD sized dolls tend to be more female. When I go looking for MSD sized male clothing, I find way more female stuff. SD sized dolls tend towards males but the clothing is also mostly female! At least at Dollmore...

I like males better than females. That's why 10-15 of my 51 dolls are females. The rest are boys.
