A Male Dominated Dollfie World?

Jul 6, 2010

    1. ^ this: Spot on!!!!

    2. I never really thought about that but its definitely true.

    3. YES! I like both girl and boy dolls and do get annoyed that some companies release almost all boys (like crobi)

I agree with you, soom and volks is usually pretty even with male and female doll releases. I'd love to see more luts girls too!

I'm someone that likes my boy dolls to have girl doll partners so it's kinda hard at times to find 'mates' :(

edit: I see a lot of people not liking the voluptuous girl dolls. I'm a straight girl (engaged to a man) and I LOVE the DD style curvy body, the dollmore model doll with the large breasts and more shapely body also iplehouse EID. But then everyone has their 'types'. I just find curvy women beautiful. :)

    4. I don't think there is a bias, if you want companies that concentrate on female dolls try Peakswoods or Dollstown where the male moulds are in the minority... I guess a company concentrates on whatever their sculptors strengths are, and as there are so many companies these days, it's not a problem. I only have 1 male doll and it will always remain that way, I have loads of girls though and have never felt there was any bias against my preference. I think you are just looking in the wrong places ;)

    5. Since I don't really like female dolls - I like to look at them but I don't really want to have them - it doesn't really bother me. What bothers me much, much more is this: There you have this yummy, properly adult-looking body. And the head looks like that of a little boy. Like putting a ten-year-old's head on a 25-year-old's body. Ack. To be honest, I find that slightly gross because it just doesn't fit.

    6. I don't really see any one gender dominating the other...
I actually think they are about even in the dollie world. It really depends on what companies you frequent/prefer, because as said before, some companies are more oriented towards a gender than another.

Personally, I really find male dolls more attractive. I have trouble liking females for some reason @o@
The male body is really attractive, and so are female bodies. But I still like male bodies better? Call me corrupted, but I basically grew up with the anime bishounen. I just cannot find a boy IRL that is as attractive to me as those 2D characters, and I find the more feminine boys better. Always. (Though I do like my guy with some muscles.) Yaoi is also a huge influence -laugh-.
I wanted my first doll to be a feminine male so that he can pass as both female, and male (cheaper, and he can wear girly clothes xD). He is my exact dream doll, since I have a soft spot for males, but and even softer spot for female clothing. My next planned doll will be male, since I'm basing him off of a male character. The third doll I buy I hope to be a centaur or faun, so MALE PLEASE. Lastly, I really really really want a little girl. I really like MSD girls c:
I'm picky about my male sculpts, but I'm even pickier about female sculpts. Plus, I just cannot imagine a female without their soft, squishy breasts and jelly legs -cough-resin-cough-> .> Cleavage is another point of frustration when shopping for females. But their clothes are so cute ^^ You know, I think that girls have a large selection of clothes because you can come up with so many styles. For some reason, I think I think that boys have less styles that they can wear... just compare the male/female parts of almost any store. Much less selection on the males part.
Girl dolls can be cute/pretty/whatever, but the fact is that they will be pushed further down my priority list when theres a male sculpt~

    7. I agree, but most bjd collectors I've met (usually women) collect primarily or all guys! I have a feminine majority in my house although I do have a lovely spiritdoll proud male and male floating heads.... it's hard to find a girl or even any collector that is majority female or all female collecting.

I also notice that having mostly females that a well defined female body (high detail, posability etc) is MUCH harder than finding a high detailed male body. (I'm a stickler on the bodies I get, only double jointed and must be well detailed, if it's 60cm and up i want moveable thigh joints)..

I think the companies are just going by what is bought the most often, if males are the most popular it's only the proper economical choice to release cool/new males.....

    8. ALSO another one might keep in mind that our community has A LOT of influence from yaoi and anime (where fan girls are common) and for some reason I can't understand , fan girls like watching two dudes do it.

    9. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

I was always tired of seeing only girl dolls(been having them since I was a babe, maybe it was something different grabbed my attention since I'm always attracted by the least popular or different/ weird things), and I have 7 boys and only 1 girl........I like girls but could never found the one that appeals to me, the girl I have was a "mistake" and I only bought her so I could have the boy but in the end I ended up falling in love with her and I give her more attention than the boy (but I love my little boy to pieces).........but my point is, there's a huge variety out there, many companies, some do only females or only males, mixed etc. maybe you haven't found the girl doll of your dreams? keep looking in places that make female dolls, by going to companies like Luts that has more male dolls won't help you (even though they have many girl dolls too)

@IpLemons, I'm a fan of yaoi and yet, this is not the reason why I have dolls. None of my dolls are gay (they're mostly kids and the SD is straight) I've always collected dolls since I was a kid, BJD is just another kind of doll. Everyone is a fan girl/boy at some point, that's just showing how excited/happy you are with something you like.

    10. I think the genders are pretty evenly divided in the end. Some companies do more males, some do more females. Personally I find much more interesting sculpts on the girly side, and wish companies made some men that don't have ruler-straight noses and narrow faces or big eyes and small mouths. I find the male doll world much more limited than the female one. But honestly, it's probably just because I'm biased in some way. Everyone is.

    11. I have 2.25 dolls, all females, and I RP Yaoi every night. Every couple in that game is homosexual except for one. It takes all kinds, my doll world is definitely not male dominated :D

    12. I'm one male doll and only collector :D!
      I have about 25 boys at home ^^;
      Simply because that
      1)I am into BL
2)The first doll that I had my eyes on was a boy :D!
3)They are VERSATILE!Simply, cross dress or pluck the head and fix it on a female body!
      4)They have nicer clothes :D!

Most companies tend to cater towards the female audience,
it's because, woman spends money more often than a man.
I rarely see a guy collecting dolls?

    13. I don't really like female dolls unless they are curvy (Volks, Iplehouse, Soom, Limhwa.) So my issue is that there are to many skinny straight up and down female figures.

As for male dolls, it's hard to find one that is manly looking. So far Soom and Iplehouse seems to be the only one's, that I know of, that are producing manly dolls. And it's like pulling teeth find nice cost-effective clothing for the boys.

    14. I haven't really noticed it, to be honest. A lot of the companies I like have a nice selection of female dolls- I admit to also being disappointed by Crobidoll because I would really love to see how they would do a female doll since their boys are so beautiful.

I can't say I'll have a majority or minority of boys or girls just yet. However, most of the dolls on my wishlist are female despite me being into BL. I love to spoil my girls and dress them up (my girls have more clothes and wigs than my boys- one of my girls isn't even home yet and she already has 3 outfits compared to the 1 my boy had waiting on him XD). I like to have boys to balance out the girls and vice-versa.

Some companies I think do well splitting guy/girl releases are Iple, Soom, Volks, and DOD. At least, in my opinion. Although, I'm a firm believer in being able to take a head off one doll and put it on another's body if you don't care for its given gender.

    15. I don't think it's male dominated at all. :? More often than not I come across companies that only have female dolls, or their boys are so pretty that they're practically girls. Most of my dolls happen to be boys, but that's because I like boys! I'd have to say that as far as gender(in the pants, not the face), it's about %50-50.

    16. Perhaps my reply is not really helpful, I am sorry.
I don't really feel BJD are made dominated.
Most of my dolls are Dollfie dream and I would like so much Volks would release a DD boy!
But owners of DD in Japan are "male dominated " so there is no chance ;)

    17. Well, I do get slightly miffed when I find out that a girl doll head is really a boy(I've fallen in love with one of those, and I'm planning to get it and a new body for it), but that's about it. I'm actually really happy that there are many male dolls, but I do get a little annoyed at times.

Ah well. Most of the time, it's as simple as "Get a new body for the pretty head", and all is fine. If it's a kid doll, it has no gender despite whatever genitalia it might have, so it doens't really matter that much.

    18. I have to say that I'm less frustrated with a lack of female sculpts in general than I am with mature female sculpts. I've also come across a sculpt now and then where I look at it and think 'why didn't you just make that a girl?' Something I would love to see companies do is make some of the more androgynous head sculpts available on either a male or female body. Probably wishful thinking, though.

    19. Hmm Ive noticed that half the males are feminine, and most girls are boyish.
      Maybe it's just me :/

    20. I don't think the sale world is dominated by any one gender in particular though I do think the community is if that makes any sense. Maybe because so many people purchase male dolls it gives the illusion that only male dolls are being created? All though it is nice to see that there are other collectors that like only female dolls.:D The companies I frequent usually have enough females to suit my tastes. And while I'm not big into Le's it used to seem that Soom would try and release equal amounts of both. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

The pretty cool thing is that some of the male head sculpts are androgynous so if there isn't a female version you could always make it yourself. I mean sure you have to deal with resin matching and the link but the end results are all the sweeter.

Also maybe it's a "grass is greener" scenario. I find myself getting mad sometimes because I see all these beautiful outfits for SD but I only collect Minis. It could be the same with male vs female. In regards to the outrageous anatomy on some dolls. If there were taken from a particular reference they are going to reflect that reference. As with the DD bodies as far as I can tell are anime influenced. Have you seen some of the anatomy in anime, antigravity boobs and the like.
