A Male Dominated Dollfie World?

Jul 6, 2010

    1. To me the amount of male and female dolls seems to be pretty 50/50 and I like males more than females. I think most of the time its the faceup, body, and accessories that make a doll one gender or the other. A lot of heads when seen blank look pretty androgynous. There are at least 3 female heads I can name I would like to get and make into male characters :)

    2. I've noticed that doll leaves has more female dolls then male...at least MSD sized anyway. dunno if that helps. I think you're right to say it's mostly because the majority of people want male dolls. I have two boys... but I AM a boy, so I guess it doesn't bother me so much. one of my friends has a pretty big problem with it. mostly because everyone from our group has boy dolls. one of our friends has a girl doll but that's it. so she's vowed to only get girl dolls as well. though I think it's mostly because she makes clothes for them, and doesn't have any girl dolls to make clothes for.

    3. As far as I have seen, the male doll to female ratio is pretty even, however I noticed that the male dolls are much nicer. Now don't get me wrong, the female dolls are beautiful and have nice quality too, but I think the boys have more attractive faces and well crafted bodies, that, in my opinion, would suit a female better. It's easy to spot a really handsome boy doll, but the same can't be said for pretty girl dolls, and I have all girls, though in the future, I want a male or two. I do think the market does that based on customer demand.

    4. No azone and Volks are really producing MORE FEMALE's than MALE's and i really would love to get an Volks 60cm Male for my Female's here, but definitely they will never procude men :(

    5. I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but from my pov ALOT of the male dolls out there are incredibly fem. The two heads I'm using on my females dolls are male sculpts but given their face ups no one would ever guess that, true there are probably more dolls with male bodies released than females but as far as manly men vs the more fem I'd say it kinda evens the playing field when you look at it that way

    6. I think that companies know that a vast majority of their market are female, and thus (assume) that they would prefer boy dolls over girls.

though I do agree there is a lack of girl sculpts. I am not very familiar with doll sculpts but I do notice there are always more boys than girls

    7. I definitely agree with you and I am often saddened when I see a certain part (like a pair of hands in a cute position) that is only for male dolls and the company does not sell the female counterpart. I'm sure the company is trying to sell to a certain audience, but I'm not sure who that audience is.

    8. I just read the OP's post and I don't think there are more male BJDs, I have seen plenty of female BJDs, you just have to look in the right places.

I'm actually GLAD that male BJDs are even produced!! the dolls world has been dominated by females since always. Thank you Asian people who care to make male dolls!!! and I think females still dominate this dolly world, just look at all the figurines and DDs, they are all female, well, most of them. It's about time to give a little bit of credit to the female consumers, I want mah boys!

fox_the_Gamer, most of the BJDs are created with the teen or child image, guys have delicate faces at that age, when done right a male doll will look like a male doll, the mold has nothing to do with how a girl looks like since not all girls have thin faces and long noses and the same goes with guys, not all of them are the 'macho-men' type.

chipmunkchen, ack!! I love azone dolls, I have 2 of them and only because they are boys. I've been searching but out of the... let's say: 80 azone girls, there's only 5 boys. >_>

    9. I have 4 dolls and one on the way which are all male. My next purchase will almost certainly be a girl. There are many female sculpts I like, but I've just had more opportunity to buy boys until this point. It disturbs me that there is such a high emphasis on 'sexy' dolls over unique and unusual shapes and faces more than it disturbs me that there are slightly more males or females on any one site. I suspect that for every person who only buys male dolls, there is someone who only buys female dolls. The only two people I know moderately who also collect dolls both only have females.

    10. I prefer female dolls, and I have noticed when I look around a majority of the ones being sold are male. It is upsetting to me, because I don't have as big of a selection, but if that is what the market is for, then I guess you cannot really blame the company. I plan on buying only one male doll in the future, and he is going to be a cross dresser, so yeah I guess I even want a female doll even in a non female hahaha.

    11. Haha, this idea seems strange to me because I only collect girl dolls and on flickr I follow about 100 collectors, 95% of whom also only collect girls so I live quite happily in a girly-dolly world without paying much attention to the boys. I also mainly collect Volks and they're very generous with the girl sculpts.

I think part of the impression might be due to a swing from girls to boys after more 'grown up' looking male dolls started to become available a few years ago. Before that there wasn't as much to choose from, and it probably drew new collectors to the hobby who previously saw only girl dolls.

I feel the same way about tinies, they seem to be everywhere at the moment! However I think it might just be that there are more, easy to purchase tinies around now and it draws more people to the hobby who maybe don't want to spend $1K on an SD sized doll.

    12. I think it really depends on the company. I've seen some that release predominately male dolls, and others that mostly release female dolls.

    13. Well, if there are more boys than girls right now, that'd be a good thing for me. I am far more picky about what male sculpts I like than I am with female sculpts. :)

    14. I've never been to picky with my dolls....My first was a boy but i plan to get a girl eventually for him...I don't find myself to picky

    15. Maybe it is just me but I think I see a balance with the releases of male/female dolls. I really don't have much of a prefence, just buying what I like. I have two boys out of the 17 or so dolls....a DikaDoll Finn SD sized swordsman and a MSD Angelheim luka Wolf boy. I recently acquired an AWESOME minimee Brad Pitt on a large SD male body who is wonderfully done as the character Louis from The Interview With the Vampire. But all the rest are female. And almost every one of the girls is a cat or an elf with only one acception. When searching for a new doll I am almost always drawn to the exotic and cat like. Male or female is not important currently.

I have found I mightily dislike the baby faceed boys so many tinies or YO sizes have. They just don't do it for me. I wish there were some tiny sized dolls with adult faces and bodies.

    16. It's not a male dominated hobby so much as a yaoi fangirl dominated hobby.

    17. I've totally noticed. But the doll hobby is dominated by females and it's a marketing strategy to make males for females. bEcause, I pretty much drool over every hot doll there is (not in that way though :o ). While I would like to see some more females, whenever I look at someone's doll collection, usuallally it seems to be a 2:3 ratio of girls to guys, if not 2:4. :/

    18. I have definately noticed this! One particularly surprising instance I observed was amoung Crobidoll's Japanese fanbase, I didn't read/see/hear of anybody who purchased one of Crobidoll's new girls :o

    19. THIS

the male dolls get more attention, and the gay ones even more! a shitty photoshoot of two guys together will get much more comments than an OK photoshoot of a girl doll :/

    20. I third this. Out of every 10 hobbyists on this forum I see, about 7 or them are yaoi fangirls. And that's being generous with the numbers.
