A Male Dominated Dollfie World?

Jul 6, 2010

    1. ...Maybe I'm not looking correctly, but I tend to see it as an even match of Gay dolls and straight dolls... now I know what is lacking is some nice lesbian dolls.

Now I am one of those who will look more at the male dolls because of the fact that... most female sculpts I see are waaaay too girly, and I don't really like that.

    2. Heheh, I'll fourth it. My dolls are the straight oddballs out of a huge majority of my collector friends.

It seems like more resin companies cater to male dolls, and more vinyl companies cater to female dolls. Wonder why that is? There are more Volks and Obitsu vinyl girls aren't there? That's just based on my limited observations though.

I collect both. 6 girls,10 boys. Those aren't terrible odds. Male dominated but at least the girls aren't completely overrun. ha

    3. More lesbian dolls would be nice :D

    4. Nobody fan girls over the lesbian dolls. ;.; though I've got my share of them. XD

    5. I mostly go for girl dolls, myself, but I remember being told how odd it was that I, as a lesbian, owned 'straight' dolls. It's not like I've got control of what dolls my friends owned, and which ones looked and posed the best with my girls!

That said, I would love to see more lesbian doll couples.

To the OP, a million pages ago, though, I've noticed some companies really do favor putting out boys over girls. I always assumed it was because they had less darts to sew to accomodate breasts (which was why my first doll was an immature-body Bobobie!), but catering to a fanbase that buys more male dolls than female dolls makes more sense on a business front.

    6. I noticed that!! which makes me very sad :( because I would love to have a DD boy but so far, NONE has been produced. I like Azone dolls too but they are hard to get and only the female ones are everywhere...I managed to get 2 azone boys and my azone collection will stay like that until they release more boys. ;//

I'm waiting for my first big girl doll...let's see how it goes after collecting mostly boys for 7 years^^ I'm actually pretty excited!

    7. Totally agree. :thumbup

    8. I dunno, these days I feel like the number of males and females is starting to get pretty even.
When I first got into the hobby I wanted all boys. Because I love the look of these dolls and there are so many female fashion dolls. It was nice to finally be able to create my characters and have them look like I always pictured, way before I even discovered BJDs.

But after having a few boys, I realized that I just love having girls!
I feel more inspired when shopping for clothing for them. It could be because I have so many ideas for how I would love to dress up, and I get to live that through them.

    9. I'm more a male doll person than a female doll person. I feel more comfortable with guys, and I guess it carried over to the dolls. Girls do have cute clothes though...Besides, most of my characters are males...and I'm female!

    10. I have 6 boy dolls and only 1 girl. I think it's because you grow up as a child only seeing girl dolls, and the common fashions for female bjds are mostly variations of lolita which look like little girl clothes other dolls wear. I was kind of like "yeah seen it a million times my whole life, no thanks" but the boy dolls were something new. Now that companies are making more mature female dolls though I'm starting to want them! I want a tall voluptuous woman doll...or 5 :D

    11. I know, Obitsu has a male 55cm and I suppose you could put male chest-plates on a purchased girl doll, but I think that's loads different than buying something sculpted from the feet up to be male.

Cool, congrats on your girl. <3

    12. I don't see any real difference in numbers of female or male dolls produced. It's fairly common for many companies to exchange heads for male/female bodies nowadays, too. So only the promo pics are telling about the gender the company had in mind.
I only often like the clothes (especially shoes) of male dolls but would want them for a female doll and vice versa. But I guess that's everyone's problem. ^^

    13. Out of the seven dolls I have home, I have two boys. I'm much pickier with boys than with girls, because, in my opinion, way too many male dolls already look like females. I want mine to look male. That being said though, there are now more companies making more realistic dolls in general, so I can finally get my feet wet with more boys that are all hunky and manly. :D

    14. I havent really noticed the hobby as a whole sway to either male or female dolls. Most companies offer a pretty good selection of both genders that ive noticed. I think collectors themselves do typically have a prefrence in genders but there is an even-ish ratio of both. If we were on the topic of vinyl though I think there is definitely a stronger prefrence to females (dolls not collectors) but those are a different target audience in my mind

    15. The65cm male is available as well, I believe. :3

    16. I see a gender divide by sizes, too. I have an MSD boy, and if I cruise the MP for clothes, I'll have to sift through ten listings full of girls' clothes before I'll find any boy stuff. It's a bit better for company sites, though. Girl MSDs, particularly MNF seem to be super-popular, so you'll see a lot of them/stuff for them.

I also see most heads as easily androgynous. I love when a male head or female head is put on the opposite body with great results. Though there are some (HZ comes to mind) that definitely wouldn't work, and they're mostly very masculine heads.

But SDs seem to have a definite male bent. If you know your Dollfie history, it was the male doll that Volks made that really took off with heavy demand. Female dolls can be found in every doll category, from fashion, to statues, to Tonner, to porcelain, and on and on and on, while if they do cover male dolls, it's sometimes as an afterthought. Male dolls, and the heavy demand for them is an aspect that makes this hobby different than most other doll hobbies.

I'm not telling the people that prefer female dolls to gtfo and find another hobby. What I am saying is that I'm not surprised. Also, so much of this hobby is purely subjective. One person will find a sculpt and faceup very feminine and lovely, and another will look at the same one and see it differently.

    17. With resin BJD's, I think there's a pretty good mix of male and female dolls. I see plenty of straight dolls and also gay male dolls, but lesbians are pretty uncommon. It is the vinyl dolls that are mostly female, and more likely to include lesbians.

Females generally seem to like both male and female dolls (averaged out, that is), and also seem more likely to like gay male dolls. Just think about it for a minute, how many females do you see "fangirling" over female/female pairs compared to male/male pairs? And since there tend to be more females in the hobby than males, we get a decent mix of boy and girl dolls and a lot of pretty/handsome boys.

Males, on the other hand, seem more likely to only like female dolls, and are more likely to like lesbian dolls. Many times I've seen guys comment that lesbians are "hot". You want to see some dollie photo shoots with lesbian undertones? Go take a look at the popular Dollfie Dream sites. ^^ DD's are clearly designed with males as the primary target, and they are all female and can be super sexy.

Disclaimer: the above are my observations only and are meant to be broad, of course there are exceptions and this is only my opinion. ;)

    18. You'd be surprised how many dollfie dream owners are female~! I know locally we have at least four or five girls who own them.
Though the lesbian thing does seem to pop up more there due to appreciative audience. XD

    19. I think as far as companies are concerned, the female doll to male doll ratio tends to be consistent. Although once you start going towards larger sizes (70cm+), there tend to be more male dolls.

Personally I like girl dolls more than I like boy dolls, ESPECIALLY with the trend of uber muscley, veiny boy dolls lately. But I also prefer to look at the female form than a male form. I also find it easier to dress my girls than I ever did my boys, even my girlyboy I had at one time. >.<

I do think that once you start getting into people's collections, there might be more boy dolls owned than girl dolls. I don't think this is a bad thing. It's just a reflection of the collector's preference.

What does confuse me, is that girl dolls with more mature features that are different from the usual doe eyed small nose, petite and demure figure are described as looking better as boys. But boy dolls with with very feminine features are absolutely perfect the way they are.

      Thoughts?
