1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

A more interesting name than BJDs?

Dec 4, 2012

    1. I use the abbreviation (ABJD, BJD) only in writing (on the Internet). I use 'dolls' in conversations w/non-collectors (then explain). I prefer the whole 'keep it simple' approach :D

So far my fav comment on this thread LOL -
JennyNemesis said: "..that contemptuous eyeroll they use on World-Music Goddess Ladies who refer to their Sacred Yoni by its own secret name."

    2. adhara-- The OP of the thread or my first post to the thread? o: I can't speak for the OP, but my first post was stating what I personally prefer for myself, not what I expect everyone else to adhere to ^^;;;; I apologize if it came off wrongly.
      Around family, I call them whatever my parents call them. If they call them dolls or toys, I don't change the term mid-conversation-- I just go with whatever term my parents are using at the moment. It's more for anyone else who doesn't know me personally/the hobby. I'm not ashamed of my hobbies, I just don't talk about them when it's not appropriate because I know people wouldn't approve or understand-- I just want to avoid people getting the wrong impression of me based on my hobbies if I can help it. I've been judged for lesser so... XD;
If it helps, I don't bring up either my dolls or my cosplays to anyone who's not in the hobby aside from immediate family. ^^; My family might pick on me for my hobbies but they accept me as I am anyway, so there's that at least. Other people may not accept so readily unfortunately ):

    3. As a linguist, your post makes me cry tears of happiness.

Language is constantly evolving, but if it's to be an effective method of communication sense and meaning have to be along for the ride. You can't just choose words that look or sound pretty if the meaning you're ascribing to the word is not the meaning that other people understand.

Whatever you personally call them at home...everyone on this forum is interested in dolls with ball-joints... so the common term, the most understandable term, is naturally BJDs. ;)

    4. no. in my opinion, toys dont cost more than $100. if it costs more than that its obviously not meant for a kid. consoles are NOT toys. i dont really care about iDevices but they still arent toys. and dont give me that cr*p about Barbie having a $200 dream house because obviously no one in their right minds would buy that for a child

    5. I wasn't going to post in this thread, but this comment bothers me so I wanted to address it. Consoles are toys. Toys most certainly can be over $100. The price of an item does not change or constitute what the item is.

Also, if a family is particularly wealthy, it's pretty reasonable to assume the kids in that family would have expensive toys. I work at a retail store and one of the guidelines we use is "don't sell out of your own pocket". Just because something is expensive to you does not mean it is expensive to someone else.

    6. Excuse me, what?

So...you're telling me that if I save up to purchase said dream house (we'll use this as an example; please feel free to substitute any expensive toy of your choice here) because my daughter really wants one, then I'm not in my right mind?? I advise you reconsider your language usage in the future, because I find that to be terribly insulting and offensive. Accusing someone of insanity because they make pricier toy purchases is not a small potatoes game. I'm certainly not wealthy, but if my daughter's heart is set on something of some monetary value, then I'll do my best to get it for her. Incidentally, my daughter has her heart set on a BJD. I plan on saving up to get her one, because she wants one that badly. Is it over $100? Yup. Do I consider it a toy? Yup. Am I 'out of my right mind' for giving a ten-year-old an item that she badly wants and will treat with care? I should say not.

Having your own opinions is fine. Insulting a whole group of people because you don't agree with something is utterly uncool.

    7. Agreed. If I recall correctly, this forum was originally for Super Dollfies and similar dolls. In trying to decide what makes a doll similar to a Super Dollfie, I thought ball joints were not distinctive enough. Exactly as you point out, many dolls have ball joints. They all can properly be called BJDs, but are not what this forum has in mind. I thought that any way of specifying these dolls ought to include their customizability as well as their joints, hence ACE dolls. (Also, it's easier to pronounce!)

I'm very glad you like the term!:aheartbea It's too bad we'll never get anyone to use it.

    8. Oh no, you'll find many people (myself included) are the same way, but as I said, other people deny it even to themselves, or try to dictate what they should be called in order to feel better about themselves.

Apart from the fact that this is not fact, not true and ridiculous, how does that work then? Is it $100 in one sitting, or $100 per child at any given time, or $100 per item?

Because the new Wii Mi is $99. So that's a toy. Games are under $50, so they're toys. And you can get a BBB tiny for $90, so
that means BJDs are toys. Gameboys and their sucessor Gameboy colours cost less than $100 when they first hit Europe and America. Apart from the new 3DSXL, most of the DSs are now under $100. They're toys. My mum was completely fine with buying an 'expensive' console for me and my brother to share. That's like, under $100 per child. Even now, all of our grown up toys are under the strict condition that we share, :lol

If someone is 'stupid' enough to spend that much money on a kid, well, that's their deal, their money, but it doesn't therefore mean that the item purchased at toysRus is anything but a toy. Course language to prove a point is what children think grownups do, which is also incorrect.

    9. Not to mention most ABJDs don't have true ball joints...jointing systems based on true ball joints as used for traditional ball jointed dolls and some traditional jointed puppets, but the jointing systems are not usually ball shaped in ABJDs. Hence, although there was always the Volks branding issue (much as was previously mentioned with the example of Hoovers being used in reference to vaccum cleaners) why I was never really adverse to the term Dollfies being used in place of BJDs. Asian Jointed Dolls or Customisable Asian Jointed Dolls holds a lot more truth than BJDs.

    10. I write BJDs but if talking about them I often refer to them as resin dolls, just dolls or refer to mine by name.

    11. That's absurd - of course toys can cost more than $100! Aside from doll houses, it's not at all unusual for larger plush toys, ride-on toys for toddlers, radio-controlled cars/boats/planes and all kinds of large scale playthings fall into that price range. And playthings are toys - that's one of the defining features, after all!

And as for "no one in their right minds", keep in mind that depending on a person's financial situation, spending $100 may be less of an extreme than $10 is for someone else. $100 is such an arbitrary line to draw!

    12. I'm okay with BJD. but i often call them dollfies or ball-jointed dolls tho :)

    13. I just say ball-joint dolls. I'm sorta with you; I don't like abbreviations much, and for those who don't know what bjd stands for (which is a lot of people), it just answers it right off the bat.

    14. Hah, I only refer to them out loud as BJDs when I'm talking to another person who knows what they are, otherwise I just call them dolls, I don't really feel like another name would really be needed for them eh?

    15. In GBP, $100 is about £64. As a child, I definitely had toys worth that much. I had an electric motorbike, sylvanian family houses that cost a fair bit, large soft toys, etc. and in the UK most things don't get lowered in price, a $40 video game should, by all means, be £25-ish in the UK, but it's not, it's £40. Same goes for other things.

And feel free to say my parents are not in their "right minds", but at least they didn't shove me in front of a TV, iPad or iPhone like a large number of parents did these days. I'd rather spend £100 on a toy for my child, than £50 on them mindlessly tapping a screen.

    16. I just call them dolls. 'BJD' sounds strange on my tongue, too.

    17. I don't mind BJD, though I prefer the term Dollfie. It sounds cuter. Though, I've conditioned myself into saying BJD rather than Dollfie because I know Dollfie is usually regarded as the term solely for Volks.

    18. I call mine soul keepers. Just to freak people out.

    19. I call them my dolls mostly. I did for years think msd stood for mid sized doll and Sd was standard sized doll if that counts.

    20. Usually I'll call them bjds. That's especially with those who aren't in the hobby.
