1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

A more interesting name than BJDs?

Dec 4, 2012

    1. I perfer "Little Resin People"

    2. Depending on who I'm talking to, I either "collect resin dolls" or "customize cast-resin figures". "Figures" tends to get more oohs and aahs, but I think that's a side-effect of the otaku audience.

    3. For some reason I always seem to refer to my BJDs as "figures" when talking to my friends or coworkers. *_*
I don't really know why I do it but I'm always too embarrassed when people ask if it's a doll and I have to fess up.

Anyone else like this? or anyone else have different ways of referring to their dolls in public?

    4. I call mine dolls, as short for BJDs or balljointed dolls, which requires a lot more explanation.

Sometimes I tell people they're like giant sized action figures, though. LOL! Guys can relate to that a bit more.

    5. Nope, no problem. I usually describe them as "art dolls," though, to distinguish them from reborns, porcelain dolls, and playline dolls. But they are dolls, so that's what I'll call them. "Figures," to me, are decidedly different (and I do have a small collection of those, as well).

    6. I prefer to call them "resin girl/boy" but normally I just say "doll" and most of people I know because of same hobby, understand what doll we mean to. :D

    7. I don't think anyone I know is familiar with the term BJD. I usually just say "doll" when that is the case.

    8. Wow, this has to be the funniest post I've read on DoA! I have tears in my eyes from laughing! I agree with your point as well :)

I call them ball-jointed dolls when people ask about my hobbies, and if someone asks more, I'll say they are made of resin and completely customizable. The ball joints allow them to hold many of the same poses that humans do, so they are great photography subjects and leave it at that unless they ask more questions. My fiancé will refer to them as customizable art dolls if his coworkers or family ask about me. I agree with the majority that calling them by what they are is easier and more straightforward. I don't think most people really care if an adult collects dolls.

    9. When speaking to most people, I just say I enjoy sewing for dolls and leave it at that. :) Since I've never had more than 3 dolls at one time before, I really don't consider myself much of a collector and tend to often avoid statements like "I collect dolls". I'm more of a doll clothes sewing hobbyist, and that tends to get a lot more understanding from the people around here. Sometimes I use the term Dollfie/Super Dollfie when speaking about my dolls, since mine are the actual Volks Super Dollfies. I don't use that term often, though, as it tends to confuse people and they think I'm saying something like "D-elfies" and they sit there like "O_o? What about elves?".

So yeah, I don't use the terms BJDs or ball-jointed dolls. I tend to just say dolls. ;)

    10. I call them articulated figures.

    11. I caught myself callling them "oversized action figures". After all, people dress and undress action figures, alter their hair, paint their faces. Therefore what we do. And hey, mine are more than double the size of these smaller models. Ergo: Oversized.

    12. Standard "dolls" or 'bjd" are fine for me. Actually I prefer "dolls" because bjd sounds similar to "life safety" on my native language.
