A Small Collection or a Big One?

Jun 11, 2012

    1. I plan to have a small collection of ten dolls but there is a trouble. I did have four in home, one incoming, two heads waiting for bodies and about six “essential” in the wish list. That’s why I will probably end buying more than ten. :doh

The collection is exaggerated big when the owner does not want his dolls anymore or totally forgot the existence of items. If the things are perishing without attention and/or any praise it is an exaggeration.

I still believe that the collector can be satisfied buying only one doll when the chosen is the “best” in his personal opinion. It is true because my first was my favorite ever. Quality is more important than numbers and the best way to know about quality is listen to your heart. Nobody is obligated to buy any three cheap dolls while dreaming with another one more expensive, neither to buy an expensive doll because of its social status if really want the cheapest unlimited edition.
Anything is worst or better because of prices or limited editions. Fame is irrelevant. Everything is really good when make you happy. Buy exactly what you really want in the reasonable quantity you can easy store and manage in home.

    2. Well...it was supposed to be one ... but 7 later and I'm thinking of adding an 8th! I'm determined to one day add a girl to the troupe.

    3. I've only had one doll at a time since I started (in 2008! What.) I do eventually have plans for four dolls, but I'm very...completist, I suppose? I don't want her going without the perfect eyes, wig, etc. Now that my first girl is almost finished (and she has a huge wardrobe), I can start saving for the next girl or one of the SID boys. Once I have my four core characters done, I might expand a little or get a tiny or something. :p

    4. I have 16 dolls now and feel, for now anyway, that my doll family is complete. I feel is is quite a good size collection, any more and I wouldn't have enough time to make things for them.

    5. What size do you plan to keep your doll collection and why?
I had planned to stick with one. However, I now have ordered one, a head and am about to order another. Which soon will put me at 4. I plan to keep the collection small and though I do have my eye on a couple more will probably top out at 7. I want to be able to expand wardrobe etc. It's a hobby that ebbs and flows with me so I can see going back into ignore stage and the back into interested stage. It's never going to be the focal point of my time so a large collection would be out of the question.

I'd also like to know what you'd consider a big collection and/or small collection.
Well, a collection to my mind would need to be more than three objects so a small collection would probably be in the 3-7 range. A large collection to me would be probably over 15. At that point I think one would be having o devote a significant portion of their time and income to maintain a group that size. There's also the question of collecting versus interacting. Some people here collect and have very many sitting in boxes. I would like to maintain a smaller collection so that's not me. Mainly, because as I said before, I want it to be a size I can interact with. I have a huge record/CD/book collection and know what the "collecting" bug can be like and am starting to downsize that so that I have a more manageable size of possessions. So I'm trying to be careful here.

    6. Well I’m completely new to this and I can see what you mean about keeping your collection small to keep you comfortable (I take it as you mean so you don’t have so many dolls to put away or have out).

I personally want to keep my collection small. I have only one right now and another on her way when layaway is over. I really want a RealPuki and then one from Limë and maybe Dust of dolls. But for sure I don’t want big dolls, like the one I have and the other whose coming they’re both 14 cm. I love that size because they’re easy to take around and put away.

But any who I feel like being new also makes me a lot more shy with my dolls than other people.

What I’d consider a big collection would be large 40+ cm dolls or 10+. I have seen people on here who have a LOT (like 20+) and I consider that a lot but at the same time I may end up being that person one day lol!
I see a small collection being 10 - but also shorter BJD. I guess it’s more of a size thing for me

One more thing too: I got my first BJD mostly because she was limit addition. I don’t have a story line for her or even a character based off her. I’ve become more use to referring to her as a she and making her seem more real but I do feel like it depends on how you see them. If you have an entire story planned out I guess 15 dolls can seem like a small amount but if you’re just getting them because they’re pretty I do feel like 15 is a big number lol

    7. What size do you plan to keep your doll collection and why?
Right now I am approaching the 20 doll mark. I feel pretty satisfied with my collection, but there are still a few more that I'm for sure planning to get, and I know there will be more in the future that will get added to the list...so I am setting the bar at 35. I think anything larger than that would be very difficult for me to handle, and very difficult to find room for in my current living condition.

I'd also like to know what you'd consider a big collection and/or small collection.
To me, a small collection would be 1-5; medium 6-15; large 16+. I think with the multitude of companies now that are making more affordable dolls, the bar has been raised for what is considered a "big collection." I am seeing a lot of answers saying 15 or 20 is medium or average, but to me that's still a lot!

    8. I'm also approaching 20 (blast. It's been a while since I've counted) and that doesn't include the heads, who are expecting bodies. Lately though, I've not been actively managing my dolls, and I've been feeling decidedly less ruffled about new releases and things, so it's quite possible that I'm reaching collection nirvana. I've got a pretty big wish-list still, but I don't know yet if I'm really going to get everything on it.

A big collection- to me- is one that involves lots of dolls/clothes/accessories/time etc. I suppose I wouldn't really give it a number, because I've seen people with 5 dolls and so much clothing, shoes, wigs, furniture, and other related things that it feels like a massive collection. On the other hand, my 18 don't feel like so many as there's hardly any shoes, only a few wigs (that aren't on heads), and maybe a handful of clothes that aren't on bodies. I don't have any furniture, and I don't consider my fabric collection and sewing machines part of the doll thing necessarily (although that's what they're primarily used for at the moment). It's tough to explain- for me though, the number of dolls is only one part of the hobby. I also don't worry about not remembering how many I've got, or all the 'birthdays' or not seeing some for ages (I haven't seen the vast majority of my collection in nearly a year, and the ones I do see most days have been pretty much left on the shelf this year as I've been busy). I don't feel like I need to do all that to be a collector/lover of dolls.

    9. My two floating heads are having a body now and with 7 dolls, I've come to the conclusion that I really don't want anymore. Maybe I'm even going to downsize a bit, because I think it's too crowded in my cabinet.

    10. I have a fairly small collection at 7 dolls(6 sd's plus a puki), and I do like it that way. Perhaps one day I'd like to expand my collection more, I do really love looking at very large collections! But I have so many ideas for ridiculously time consuming outfits for my dolls, I think I'd have to quit my job and spend all my time making outfits for my own dolls if I were to be completely happy with a huge collection! XD But never say never, I think with these threads, sometimes you look back a few years later and you think '...did I say that?' as you look around your house overrun with dolls XD

    11. I wish I had kept mine smaller...I have damn near 90!

    12. Haha, why would you wish it smaller :) I have 168 & waiting for 17 more. I never wished it was smaller (i do wish i have more room) But then again, i am addicted and obsessive. The more the merrier.

    13. When I first started out I only wanted 4 dolls tops, but the more I kept looking around at more companies it has reached to having about 8? I don't think I would have more than 10, I think, I hope. Although I will love each and every one of my dolls!

    14. I may have answered before but I've probably changed my answer XD i plan on having no more than 16 dolls total. I have about 10 now, but need a few last ones for my "families".
I have a larger collection than intended at first, when i first started i only really wanted two SDs, but now i have (with my boyfriend) 5 SDs, 1 mini, and 3 tinies XD i also have two other minis visiting lol

I think more than 25bjds would be too many, im already running out of space lol. Tho i guess a shelf unit may fix that

    15. I have no idea what size I plan to keep my collection. Ideally, it would be a manageable size, whatever that may be? Right now I have 7, I'm working on paying for another, and there's at least 5 more on my wishlist at the moment. My collection is mostly MSDs, and I don't really see that changing either.

I figure when they start taking over an entire room, there might be a problem! XD

    16. As it happens that there is a little story thought out in my head, I'm currently planning to have not less than 8 ones, but it's not clear enough fow it will be going in future, so it's only a wish.

    17. I plan to have a big collection (over 10 dolls) and I haven't thought of a limit to how many dolls I'm going to collect over the years. It will take a long time, though, since at the moment I'm just a poor student. :sweat Well, it's not like I'm in a rush. I'm currently waiting for my first two dolls to arrive, and I'm sure once they arrive I'll be able to focus entirely on them instead of planning a third doll too soon.

I've wanted to get a big collection from the beginning. I never had the "only one doll, okay, no more than three..." thing. There are many dolls I want, many characters I want to turn into dolls, and many stories I want to tell. Good thing I'm not an impulse buyer, haha. I think long and hard before actually buying a doll.

    18. A lot depends on doll size for me I think - If I had 12 SD sized dolls I would have nowhere to display them, and I like to look at my dolls, so that would be difficult - But I do have 12 tinies of various size/scale, and they barely take up any room - plus tinies are a lot more sociable with each other and don't mind sitting close together, unlike adult dolls who may hate each other! I wouldn't want more than 12 tinies - if I get another, I'll sell one probably too.

Although tinies don't take up much room though, they do need time - I am thinking of introducing a rota as usually I only dress and think about 3 or 4 of them at present - the others are pretty much ignored which is sad I think. I have 2 SD sized girls as well, and they're overlooked as I'm always styling the tinies - mainly because they are easier to handle and dress than my huge, kicking, rotating girls!

I do however want more big dolls - I feel like 2 isn't enough. I have 5 more planned, and think that will be enough - I have no room for more anyway and it will be a squeeze to fit them in my bedroom in the first place! I have a couple of 1/4 dolls on order and want a 3rd, but I have no experience of that size bjd - I may want more once I have them though!

When I bought my first doll though, I didn't plan on having more than a couple - too expensive LOL

    19. My plan is to cap out at 13 dolls total. I have 9 complete dolls now and 1 floating head still in need of a body. At first 13 seems like such a peculiar number for me to have since I don't tend to like odd numbers, but 14 dolls feels strange to me. Though I admit, I am teetering on the temptation of 14 dolls simply because I can't decide if I want a sleepy eyed version or an open eyed version of a particular doll, and since I truly adore this doll I'm contemplating simply getting both.

    20. I want to have a small collection. Less than 10 would be ideal. I have 5 dolls right now (3 Pullips, 2 BJDs). I'd like 1 or 2 more BJDs, 3 max, and I don't need anymore Pullips. I won't count any project dolls my BF tries to get me to do haha.

I want to keep it small so it can be a little more personal. I like having a doll hanging around me at my computer, on the couch, etc. Having this many already makes it hard to decide who and having more than one just makes it feel kind of impersonal somehow.
