A Small Collection or a Big One?

Jun 11, 2012

    1. When I got into this hobby, I wanted one doll to spoil rotten.

Now I have a number of dolls that starts to reach the uncanny.

    2. I plan to keep a real few, around five or less. Not that I don't want a bigger collection, it's just difficult for me financially.

    3. I actually want a small collection.. but it grows...
It is hard to keep the collection the same size I think, I keep wanting more dolls when I found a very beautiful one

    4. I definitely prefer a smaller collection! I even somewhat regret that i can't have just one doll. I feel like i can provide the doll best care and love if there's just one doll. Otherwise i will have to choose between buying things to one of them of to second one, who will i hold in my hands this time. I worry that they can't recieve exactly the same amount of attention. So i wish i could have just one doll, but i just can't, i have four. I love them all, but feel guilty for not loving them equally...

    5. I expect to have a fairly big collection, between 20 and 30. I did not enter this hobby with a top number in mind, partly because I came from being a highly posable fashion doll collector (Tonner). I did however start with a very firm rule- NO SDs. I started out thinking of my planned group of tinies as "the tribe". I am pretty fussy about scale which limits what will fit in my collection.

    6. I've got 24 dolls presently, and sometimes I feel like my collection is too big. Even if I'd prefer to just have a select, special few, I'm drawn to the diversity of all the different sizes and types of dolls that are out there now. I've yet to feel like my collection is completed, even if it's becoming more difficult for them to all have their own clothes, shoes, etc. I'll probably end up with over thirty at this point, and I'm okay with that, as long as I have room to put them somewhere!

    7. Small, because:
      Travel
      Spoiling :3
      Money
      Keeping track of less dolls
Not being stretched out for giving each doll the limelight in photographs etc
Because I just like to have a few with lots of things to share. Or even just one with lots of stuff :)

    8. I would like mix and match although I think I will avoid more than 70 cm size and smaller than 15-20cm size, no reason though, it just don't appeal me enough.
If I have a lot of mix scale, I know which can I bring for travel, for hugging, for just a small walk, etc. I would like limiting my doll like 5 the maximum, but I'm sure it is just a hope cause I'm already love a lot of sculpt and just can't choose which one to buy*_*

    9. Fairly small, I think. My partner collects dolls as well and we live in a small apartment, so I don't have room for dozens of dolls. I think 5 might be a good number for me to stop at, not including minis.

    10. Small collection ... and spoil them rotten with lots of clothes. I tend to be a neat freak, so with too many, I feel like they become clutter and I start boxing them up and storing them (made this mistake with fashion dolls). That's no fun. So, I'm limiting bjds to a few that I really love and will play with photograph often.

    11. its sort of a struggle because i love so many sculpts, and i'd like to have an impressive collection, but sometimes when i think about how much money goes into one doll alone, i get a little scared. I'll probably have an ever growing collection but i feel guilty about only being able to spoil a few of them at a time.

    12. I might have answered this in the past, but I'm not sure!

To me, a small collection is single digits, so under ten. Medium is 10-20. Large is 20+. But it can vary... Ten microtinies feel very different than 10 SDs! How you display them can make a difference, too. If you cluster them all together, it can seem like a lot, but if you display them around the house, it seems like less.

Bottom line is, I'm not very concerned about numbers. To me, it's about having the collection "under control." I'm only happy if everyone has just the right wig/faceup/eyes, and if they have a few great options to pick from for clothes and shoes. If I can't afford to get everyone suited up properly in a reasonable amount of time, then someone has to hit the road to fund accessories for the others. Lately, I've been selling a lot of dolls because of this!

Ideally, I'd like to keep the collection under ten, but if I ever focus in enough to get the ones I have 100% accessorized, I'll end up with more, I'm sure :sweat I just want to start making sure everyone is spoiled and complete and as they should be before I add more!

    13. I would like to keep my collection on the small side. I currently have 3 with a fourth about to be put on layaway. As of now, I don't want to go over 7 total, mainly because of space and money. I consider 1 - 5 small, 6 - 10 medium, 11 plus big. But that's just me of course. I think it's great if someone only wants one, or a ton of them!

    14. Whether a collection is big or small is incredibly subjective, but I don't want to go over 10 dolls given how much my hubs and I move for our jobs. I also can't leave them out thanks to cats and storage issues. The last two countries I have lived in don't seem to believe in closets or STORAGE. ARGH. I bought my first BJD about 5 years ago, and I only have 8 right now. I always want more, but I have realized that I am largely content looking at other people's owner pics. If I get close to the magic number, I have to consider selling dolls if I want a new one. I don't want to collect dolls like I collect books.

    15. Right now I think I have a medium-size collection. I have seven dolls and I'm waiting for three. And I have plans for at least five more but I think about 20 dolls is my limit. More than that and it would be too much.

    16. At first I just wanted a small collection, but now that I find more and more dolls I love, and come up with more and more personalities etc for potential dolls, I just can't stop xD so I think my collection will grow... But I don't want it TOO big... Not like, 100 dolls xD

    17. How do you define small and how do you define large? XD I'd like to think my collection is small. But I am over five dolls now. (I think I have seven...) I have a list of characters I want and beyond that, have no plans. I'd like to think my collection will end up in the medium range. I'd like to be able to keep all my dolls on a shelf or book case. I found the most perfect cabinet that would work at Office Max, but I'll see where it goes. I would define small as 1-10 dolls, a medium collection 11-25 dolls, and a large collections 26+. I am sure each person would consider different numbers. It depends of tinies and animals count too. XD And the 1/6 size.

    18. Small collection for me as well. I currently have 3: 2 sd and 1 msd. And they don't have much room to lounge in technically. I hope to someday have a small room for my dolls and then I may consider having a larger collection? But I already have plans on getting 3 more dolls, but they're long term projects which I will only begin working on next year. That way I think I will feel less guilty on overspending, and attempt to complete 100% of my current dolls' looks before beginning on the next plans.

    19. I think I will only have a small collection. I already have one doll, I ordered two heads and I plan on ordering a new doll next week. I mainly want SDs and because of how large they are, I won't have that much space to put them in. I don't plan on having any more than ten dolls. I would feel bad to keep my dolls in a box because of space issues. I also think I would be overwhelmed by having more than ten dolls.

    20. I plan of getting just a small collection, a small family but who knows what the future give me. :)
