A Small Collection or a Big One?

Jun 11, 2012

    1. Do you plan to keep your BJD collection small or big?
At the beginning I only wanted 3.
now I have 17 and 4 heads, so sometime 21. I would like to have 3 more at the moment (wishlist -.- I buy at the moment none of them)
I think there are too many. now they are with me and I would not sell... i love my boys :aheartbea
the plan did not work ^^

How many dolls would you determine as little or a lot?
I think 1-5 is little, 6-10 is lot. and over 10 is too many. I have definitely too many :sweat

    2. no matter how many you have, treat them as your friends. i prefer small collection. and prepare tons of clothes for them, change for seasons.

    3. I think I'd keep my collection small. So that I do care about each of them, yet still have a variety of dolls.
I don't want to get bankrupt/ wasteful for dolls to the point that I can't devote time to each of them.

    4. A small one, because I lack place, and I think you don't really appreciate a doll as much when you also have tons of other doll to care about.
      3 dolls max. I promise.
I only have one at the moment.

    5. I would like a larger one, but a small one is fine. I don't have the space for tons of dolls. I think I may cap out at five or six and try to stay around that number or even a little under, depending on the size I'm with at the time. I feel like any more than ten would just take too much effort and I couldn't do with them all what I wanted.

    6. Do you plan to keep your BJD collection small or big?
I limit my doll collection at max. 15 dolls (all size). Originally I plan to have only 9 from MSD-SSD size dolls and a little space left for smaller dolls which I may get, if I find a suitable and interesting one. So I can say my collection is in between small to average size.

How many dolls would you determine as little or a lot?
Less than 10 as small collection, 11-20 as average, 20-30 as large and more than 30+ very large collection :)

    7. I keep trying to downsize, but it's so hard :...( Ideally I want 16 dolls max. but don't seem to get lower than about 20 - I've been quite ruthless this week but still can't bear to part with too many of them....do you think maybe tiny dolls don't really count? :sweat I do find it stressful having more than about 15 dolls as I can't dress them all as nicely as I'd like to - that's the main limiter for me I think.

    8. I'm planning on only having 4 dolls max, as any more and I probably wouldn't be able to divide my attention (or funds) to all of them equally, and because I can already see the total costs adding up if I were to buy more than 4...

I consider a big collection consisting of around 10+ dolls and a small collection being less than 6 dolls, so at the very least I want to stay in small collection territory if I can't keep to 4.

    9. I love a big family, even though it isn't for everyone. Especially with my little Lati tinies, I think the more the better and each has her own distinct personality. :) I currently have 12 dolls in my dolly family with 2 more pre-ordered. I'm sure I'll purchase more from the secondary market along the way without hesitation.

There's the issue of purchasing clothing, eyes, wigs, etc for each doll but honestly I've been collecting those things since I joined the hobby so I have more than enough to go around. I don't just buy when I see something that would work for a specific doll but I buy when I see anything that truly tugs at my heartstrings or seems beautiful to me, I purchase and it always works out later. Perhaps this is why I don't mind a big family? Shrug. I just love having a Lati Yellow baby gang. T_T

    10. I'm hoping to keep it a small collection. My other doll collections (Blythe and momoko) got too big and I didn't enjoy them as much, but I couldn't part with any of them either!

On the one hand it'll be quite easy with bjds because they are so expensive, but there's also a really amazing variety of dolls that makes me want more! There's about 6 that I'd really love but I think that would make my collection too big. I think the bigger the dolls the fewer it takes before it feels like there's too many!

    11. I think 10 would be max for me, more and I get confused Oo xD
Plus I agree, that when you have less dolls, you apreciate them more ^^

    12. I always thought I'd prefer a smaller collection, but have ended up with a larger one along the way... however, it's made up of smaller "families," which I think keeps the whole thing manageable. I don't think of the whole set in terms of "I have 20+ dolls now," but rather as "I've got a handful of families, some of them pretty small, some a little bigger."

The largest single family right now has reached about 10 or so, but realistically is actually meant to be in three parts, so even that one doesn't seem overwhelming. Plus, I really enjoy all the different options I have for clothing and aesthetics, the different combinations for posing and groupings, and all that. The bigger collection turned out to be surprisingly fun for me!

    13. I'm definitely in the 'intended as small, grew before I knew it' camp, lol. My first real exposure to bjds was a friend who had 4 dolls - each one of them had a defined character and role to play in her storyline. They all had fantastic clothes & faceups and I looked at them thinking 'Wow, if I could have four dolls one day, that would be amazing!' So when I entered the hobby myself, I had that sorta magic number 4 in the back of my brain as my cutoff.

Ha. Hahahahahahahaha. Once I got more comfortable with the dolls themselves '4' got left somewhere back in the dust. I never intended it, but my dolly increase grew organically out of wanting a wide range diversity in my collection once I saw what the bjd world had to offer with all the molds/body options/sizes.

(...ok and my inability to say no to a cute face)

    14. 4 will be my max. Any more, and I wouldn't be able to give them the attention I should. Not to mention I wouldn't have the space for more, either.

    15. Do you plan to keep your BJD collection small or big?
I'm hoping to keep it pretty small but I keep finding dolls I like and I just don't think I have it in me to let any of mine go if I ever find myself in the bigger collection range.

How many dolls would you determine as a little or a lot?
Right now I consider 5 or less to be small and maybe 10 or more to be on the bigger side.

    16. Do you plan to keep your BJD collection small or big?
Small. I'm determined to make all of their clothes myself, partially because I can't afford ready-made clothing for them, partially because I feel very happy and proud of myself every time I manage a detailed, realistic doll-sized item. If I had a lot of dolls, I could never find the time to make them clothes - I want everyone to have several outfits, including clothes for both in- and outdoors and different seasons. And I don't think I could love them all as individuals if I had, say, 50+ dolls. I would hardly remember their names... I believe my collection will stay under ten; I have five at home, one paid and a centaur bottom (:D) waiting to be paid. The centaur needs his human parts and I'm considering adding one more girl because she fits the story, but that's probably it. At least for a couple of years. :D

How many dolls would you determine as a little or a lot?

I think over ten is quite a lot, over twenty probably too much. I'd feel bad using so much money...

    17. I am not sure what I plan on having. I just get the dolls that I like so I don't want to put a limit on myself.

    18. It's interesting to read how everyone defines their collections size-wise. I agree with those who have said that as long as you're enjoying your dolls your collection is the right size for you. Some have also mentioned the size of the doll sin question affecting their perception of collection size--I also agree with this. A collection of five large dolls may appear to be a much "bigger" collection than a grouping of twice as many tinies.

I think in general that perception is everything. The size of the room where the dolls are displayed can affect how a collection is viewed as a unit--a lot or very few. The size of the dolls can affect how one views the size of the collection and "how many is too many." As long as someone is not endangering themselves or their families (through space or monetary limits), I think the most important perception of the size of someone's collection is their own view of it and how they feel about it.

Personally, I think that anything over ten BJDs would be a very large collection for me, but that's because I'm moving away from storing my OT dolls--I want to see all of my dolls displayed. I consider each type of doll to be its own collection so while I have a large doll collection, I want to keep smaller collections of each doll type so that the size of the entire doll collection remains manageable.

    19. Medium! :-)
I think 8-10 is the happy medium!
I just don't want to have a doll(s) that stays in a box. What's the point?
I also like the variety. I like the idea of having a "family".

    20. My collection is medium-sized - I have 9. I might get two more, since I have a quirk where I like to have even numbers and right now I have 5 boys and 3 girls (plus one tiny but he's fine by himself - he doesn't want a friend. ;)).

I never thought I'd have this many but my brood are more for display, and I like it that way.
