A Small Collection or a Big One?

Jun 11, 2012

    1. I never planned to have a big collection. For me up to 5 is more than enough. I guess more than 10 is quite a big collection already.

    2. I think my collection is large and I would like to keep it under 35 dolls so I won't get overwhelmed by them and still have a wide range of doll styles.

A small collection to me would be around 5-10 dolls.

Though I think it would be more comfortable if I can get my collection down to around 20 dolls.

    3. Small is a pretty relative term when it comes to me and dolls. I have been known to have a small collection of one kind of doll vs another but small for me is usually like 25 dolls, lol. I have a few hundred dolls. I've been collecting them for years, all kinds. Mostly used, mostly old kid's Barbies, but still literally I have hundreds. I know it sounds like a lot but my average doll purchase is like $1-15. $100 plus dolls are major splurges for me and I'm talking nearly 20 years I've been collecting too. Resin is a new thing for me, dolls are not.

I can count on one hand the types of dolls that I only have a truly small collection of and even then I have a few meaning at least 3-12, not just one or two. BJD's, I honestly meant it to be less. I meant to keep it to like 9 dolls max but I've actually bought 11 and as much as I keep telling myself that's it, I'm not sure it will be. I keep looking at cheaper BJD dolls and thinking "Well, you know I like that one and that one..."

I still have a yen to dye a doll dark purple and RS green is definitely calling to me and I have yet to figure out "who" but I think I want at least one doll in their green before I finish. If all I could buy was expensive dolls like from Soom or Iplehouse I'd have probably never begun collecting but sub $150 dolls? They're much more affordable and dolls of all kinds are like crack to me. I can't ever see myself not collecting something doll-wise and I don't particularly want to join a 12 step group when it comes to dolls, BJD or otherwise.

So probably I will have a larger collection of BJD's before I am done. Not in the 100's and not $800 plus dolls either. I used to buy like 2-3 Tonner's a year, usually used, but 2-3. Lately? Buying Tonner dolls costs as much if not more as buying resin dolls. At this point? I'd rather have the resin dolls. I'd rather have a $125 RS doll than another 16" fashion doll. I'm bored with fashion dolls a bit and I like the resin and how easy it is to customize it. I can't say I want to get into the 20's with my BJD dolls, but if I get to the point where it's 13 or 15 instead of 11 that will be okay. That's not too bad. Not when you're talking about $125 dolls vs $800 ones...

    4. I keep saying small. But right now I have 5 dolls and plans for 4 more.

    5. Im have a small collection. Currently 2 dolls. I might get a third one, but Im not only super picky but I have such a hard time finding clothes and such for the dolls i already have that adding to the collection would just be even more insane for me to try and decide on :p

    6. I'd say to me, a small collection is anywhere from 1 to 6/7 dolls, a medium-sized collection would be 8-20, and a large one would be anything above that.

I only have one doll (BJD) so far, and I'm planning on getting at least another one. If collecting My Little Pony has taught me anything, it's that I literally cannot predict my collections. Though one thing is certain: not everything catches my eye, which means even if I end up with a larger number of items than I originally planned, they won't be that numerous. So I'd say if I actually am able to keep buying more dolls, my collection will probably cap at around 7. Pretty small, but I don't mind. :)

    7. I think it's quite interesting to go back and see where I was a few years ago and compare it with now. My collection has been pared down, actually, to 5 dolls and 1 head. I have 2-58cm, 2-43cm, 1-26cm, and 1 SD head, with a body for it on the way. I still do have some dolls on my wishlist, but at this point, I think I can comfortably say that my resin BJD collection will never be more than 15 (perhaps it might never exceed 10). I do have 11 other dolls that are off topic for this forum, though.

    8. The collection has taken on a life of its own! When I first started out with a couple tinies, I never would have believed I'd eventually get to this point (spoken like a true addict)...but I don't regret a single one of them! It is nice to have a solid variety of sizes.

    9. Right now I feel I have a small collection. Four, with number five and six possibly coming in the next month. It still feels small to me, but I am a collector of things and I love variety so I won't get bored. I'd say a large one in my opinion is probably thirty or more...and I'd love to have one! One day my small collection WILL be a big one because I am an awful pack rat and never part with anything. XD I buy planned dolls and dolls of opportunity if money is available. Ebay is dangerous.

My collection will only grow in variety simply because creating characters and working on the dolls is relaxing to me. A true hobby.

    10. My collection is small as I currently only own two dolls, with plans to order a third pretty soon.

To me, a small collection is somewhere around five and under and medium would be around ten or so. I'd like to keep my collection fairly small. I don't think I'll ever have more that ten dolls because, from previous experiences with collecting things, my personal opinion is that the individual items in my collection feel less 'special' the bigger the collection gets. Of course this isn't true for everyone, just the way I feel. :)

    11. Oh, I do not know... At first I thought there will be but 10 of them. But there are 29 of them and yet 4-5 to come.
And i'm ok with that quantity. But more than 50 I think it's too much though...

    12. Small family of favorite dolls/characters.
Big collections is collections and it's feel different for me from just a hobby.

    13. Do you plan to keep your BJD collection small or big?
I would like to keep it small. I'm planning on keeping it around 10 or fewer because of space. I have other collections so I don't want to wipe out the space for that.

How many dolls would you determine as little or a lot?
I would say a small collection would be 15 or less. A large collection would be 20+ dolls.

    14. Well, I don't have much space so the choice has been made for me ! . . . I have ten currently - I wouldn't mind having more, because I think variation is important (and makes things that much more fun!) . . . but I am not out to have a large collection for the sake of having the collection, if that makes sense.

I'd like to say over 15 is a large collection, but compared to some people . . that's nothing.

    15. I've been collecting BJDs for over 5 years now and I have always been a small collection kind of girl. :) I would never want more than 4 dolls, and generally keep my collection at 2 or 3. Even with all the years I have been collecting, I have actually never hit my 4 doll limit. xD I guess that is how much I like a small collection, haha! I'm someone who actually feels like I must keep a small collection, because I don't like giving more attention to one doll than the others. If I had a bigger collection, I know that would happen.

In the way of terms, I consider 1-5 a small collection. 5-12 as a medium sized collection. 12-18 as a big collection, and 18+ as a huge collection.

    16. I've been around BJDs for about 6-7 years now, and I still have just two dolls (planning a third one) at the moment. I consider a small collection to be 5 dolls or fewer, and a large collection to be 10 dolls or more. I don't see myself owning a large collection because I prefer to change the hair/eyes/face/outfit of a doll if I want a "different" doll. When I have too many BJDs at one time, I can see them becoming too impersonal for me, which is something I would absolutely want to avoid.

    17. I have a very small collection of two, and could be surprised if I ever even got to five. To me (poor college student with a lot of travels and other hobbies to fund), anything over 10 or so is a very big collection.

    18. I have four dolls right now and I could see myself getting to 10-15 over the span of the next decade or so, I'm in no hurry. I tend to like smaller collections of things that I have because when I start getting a whole lot then it stops being about individual items and more about "the collection" and I hate that.

I would say less then 10 is a small collection, 10-20 is a medium and 20+ is large.

    19. I only have three dolls right now, I know probably get more in the future, but how many I have no idea. I'd like to keep my collection small so I can interact with all of my dolls, probably between 5 or 10 would be a good spot to be for me.

    20. I really want to keep my collection small. Most of them are tinies so I don't mind them but the big ones (SDs and MSDs) no more than what I have.

I have 3 MSDs (soon will be 4)

      I have 3 SDs.

I have 7 tinies of every size, I might add one or two tinies more.

My goal is no more than 15 so I have room for one MSD or one SD more, or 2 tinies.
