A Small Collection or a Big One?

Jun 11, 2012

    1. I don't quite know what counts for small, but the most I've ever had had at one time was nine. I'm back down to seven with one floating head after getting rid of ones that were from an ex boyfriend. That gives me room for two more dolls, right? Hah! I'm actually trying to slow down on the collecting and working on my current collection. As a total number I think I'll say 'no more' at.. maybe twelve. I've always sort of held that number as the cut off so I get dolls I really know I want rather than just moment buys.

    2. Mirrin: IMO small is up to 10 and then it's starting to get big. But when I started the BJD hobby I thought 10 was soooo many. :sweat Do you think that you have a big or small collection?

    3. I prefer a small collection because I can keep better focus on the needs of every doll. So I always wanted, from the very beginning, to keep my numbers very low. That being said, I got carried away creatively over the years (coming up with new, fun characters and wanting to implement them) and finally wound up with 14. But when that happened, it's like it all caved in on itself and I realized I wasn't happy (for reasons I initially stated.) Sure enough, a great sell-off ensued and now I'm back down to 4 (and back to being happy with my collection.):)

    4. When I started this hobby I was just so enchanted with my first two dolls, whom I bought fairly close together. Getting my Impromptu (Soulkid Katie A.) was like magic! At that time I never thought my collection would explode into what it is today. I haven't counted my dolls but I'm pretty sure I have over 50 of them now. I have what I consider a large collection, and I don't think I'll be stopping any time soon, though I have slowed down. I don't think I can peg a number as 'too many', though I sometimes think I need to narrow my collection down a bit. I have started buying just heads recently to save space...It's really time for me to start head swapping!

As for a small collection, I'd say anything under 10 dolls is a small collection. That's a nice size--enough to fill up some space and give lots of options, but not so many it's hard to keep them in clothes/eyes/etc. Sometimes I wish I had a smaller collection but most of my dolls I can't imagine giving up!

    5. I don't have a lot of physical space for doll unfortunately so I doubt I will ever have a large collection but I think I would rather spend money/time on things for my existing dolls rather than rushing out to buy another one.

    6. I can see myself having quite a large collection some day... Of course, at first, I was all, "I only need one," but now I have one and he's just so lonely... Since I have a collector's personality (I've always loved collecting things), I'll probably end up with somewhere between 10 and 20. Any more than that would probably be too much for me to handle, but that's far in the future, so we'll just have to see.

I would consider anything beyond 20 dolls to be a very big collection... Less than 10 would probably be a small collection, to me.

    7. Ideally I'd keep a small to medium collection of dolls. I have 1 right now and she's perfect, but I'm wanting a few MSDs and another littlefee and maybe a pukifee for her to hang out with. I've well learned that too many dolls overwhelms me because I feel like I don't have time to play with them all or enough room in my heart to love them. Not to mention that my dolls are mainly for photography practice so having a huge collection isn't exactly... ideal for me. My wish list at the moment has 5-6 dolls on it and if I were to get them all and not add any, I would have 6-7 dolls and that is perfect for me. Pushing my limits would probably be 10-11 dolls.

    8. Well honestly I'd like my BJD collection to be smaller but knowing how it's always gone with me and my dolls and how I tend to overdo it on that score I doubt that a decade from now I'm going to be sitting here looking at a reasonable collection of a mere dozen dolls. :P I did not think that I could collect resin dolls for a long time because I did not know that some could be had for a similar sum as a discounted Tonner. $125 BJD's? If someone had told me that was possible I'd have been collecting them a long, long time ago. But I didn't know. I had only read about things like the Volks dolls and I assumed that even having one BJD was totally out of my price range for several years.

I learned otherwise on DS and came here and found out about RS and Miro and several other companies that were doing dolls in the sub $200 range even new and I was off and running finally collecting resin dolls. A scant few months later I now have two MSD Miro dolls, 2 min RS dolls, an SD Miro doll and an SD boy head that I'm going to need a body for sooner or later, and okay 3 of those dolls were gifts basically, and I traded for 2 1/2 but in a very short time I've still gotten a half a dozen dolls and not broken the bank doing it. Other than getting Kelly a body I am going to slow down a lot now. Probably I won't get another doll till Christmas at least.

The only dolls that I'm pretty set on having besides these, for now, are a RS Dai and a Feng and of the two the Dai is the only one I really want this year if at all possible. Feng could wait till next year and I would not sweat it. Once I have those two I might even call it a day for a long while. I never really planned on having this many and I do like to stop, take a breath and actually enjoy the dolls I have for a while sometimes. I have 3 dolls I haven't even faced up and a doll needing a body. I really need to get on that before I proceed to the Dai/Feng dolls. Right now I'm okay with what I have. The Dai and Feng are in the future maybe but they're not a must have now thing...

    9. well I said I'll just stick with one doll, then two, now I'm on five. I want to add 4 more to my group this year hopefully. I don't think it'll stop there. I never imagined I'd have a large group but it seems I'm going to have one.

    10. I currently have three, but I have this weird thing with wanting everything to be in multiples of five.
So, I am now ordering my fourth, and I know the fifth one I'll order.
That'll also mean I have one of each size.
I know there are a ton more that I want, so I might end up having two of each size.
I'll just stick with multiples of five.
      Haha
I have no idea what that means for the size of my collection though.

    11. I actually joined the hobby with the idea of having a big collection, but now I've realized it's just not for me and I have decided to lower my collection to only 2 dolls. maybe I will give in to Fairyland's tan and get a third one but that would be it.
It's just pointless to have a lot of dolls for what I do with them (basically, I get them out once in every full moon to change their clothes and stare at how pretty they are xD) and it just ends up being a waste of space and money. :/

    12. I consider a small collection to be around 5 and 10 at most. Since my house doesn't have much space, I'll have to keep it small. I would love to have a big collection some day but at the same time, I'm a bit worried about how I'd handle it. :sweat I do know for sure I'd like at least a couple per size I own.

    13. I wouldn't say my collection is all that small, but it isn't large by any means and I think I'd like to keep it that way. I want to only keep my favorites, and maybe expand but I don't want more than 10-15 dolls I would say...

      I currently have 2 MSD sized non BJDs, 2 MiniFee's, 1 LittleFee, 1 Lati Yellow, and 2 PukiPuki's

    14. I honestly don't know anymore. At one time I really didn't have any particular limit in mind, and in fact, thought it would get quite large. Now I'm not sure that I want quite so many. However, I'm not entirely sure if my feeling of being overwhelmed by dolls was because of the number, or because I had too many that were only partly finished. If I have too many half finished dolls (floating heads, complete dolls who don't have the right clothes, etc) it starts to get to me really fast. I'm in the process of rebuilding and making big changes to a story line, and I have instituted the policy that I will not get the next doll until the one before it is complete -- final head/body combo, 1 full outfit that I'm happy with, correct wig and eyes, etc. There's a lot of dolls from that story that I know I won't reshell, though I don't know what the final number will be. That will be one of the deciding factors as to how big my doll family is likely to get. I currently have a total of 15 dolls (only two are from that story).

It's hard to say exactly what a big collection is, since size is somewhat relative. I feel like the group I have now is medium going on largish.

    15. I wish I had a smaller collection. I never really wanted over seven... but now I certainly have over seven. Now I've refused to set limits for myself--but I'd like to not go over 40. I already don't have enough room for the dolls I have--with two on layaway and one soon to be shipped, I don't know where to put them or any future, yet to be bought, ones.

    16. I only have 4,and I'm still debating about getting another doll or not. Sometimes I wish I had just one doll to dote on because I got overwhelmed recently with all the maintenance and repairs I've had to do.

    17. At this answer, I really would like to end up minimum of 5 and maximum of seven and they are all women with a male tinies or msds of course~

    18. I have collected full size baby dolls for several years & about a year ago I must have had about 50 or so......I lost count & it got out of hand & it was very overwhelming......so this past year I have sold all but my favourites & have my collection at a more manageable amount & I'm now content & enjoying the ones I do have. I have just bought my first MSD & maybe one day I will sell the rest of my baby dolls...apart from a handful of absolute favourites & just collect the BJD's ;-)

    19. Do you plan to keep your BJD collection small or big?

Some people has 40+ dolls in their collection and I really think it's nice. But, for me, it's a bit too much. Despite living in a very small place where there's barely room for me and my college stuff, I'm in the hobby more for my characters then for the BJDs themselves. There is about 10 characters of mine I want to turn into dolls, and I can think of some characters from TV shows or books I would turn into resin too, but I dont't think it goes to more then 15 dolls. Of course I can create new OCs or watch other stuff through the years, but I still think 15 dolls as a good number for my collection. It's small, but for me is far more than enough.

How many dolls would you determine as little or a lot?
Well, I think 30 dolls is a good number for an average collection.

    20. Do you plan to keep your BJD collection small or big?

I want to keep my collection as small as possible. Honestly, though, I'm prone to excess. If I can afford it, I'll buy as many as I can. No more than 10 should suit me just fine for now.

How many dolls would you determine as little or a lot?

I think a small collection is 15 and under. Over that and I start thinking WOW and get all in awe.
