Alternatives to doll carriers?

May 28, 2008

    1. I recently inherited a hard-case golf club carrier that I think is meant for taking on planes and stuff. Right now it just has some padding shoved in there, and works moderately well for carrying dolls (I was able to get an SD, two MSD, and two tinies in there with no problem and plenty of room to spare). I'm hoping to cut some foam to fit and actually make it more custom to our dolls, that way they don't get jostled around, as it stands on one end and rolls. XD I'm looking forward to it.

    2. Though all of these ideas are fabulous, I'm partial to hardcover carriers, then I know its safe. I'm going to be traveling with my bjd a lot on airplanes, so I have to have a hardcover. I'm also very weary of having camera and laptop bags, because they're really easy targets for "zomg, I'll steal that obviously valuable and sellable item."

I'm looking for something like a wine carrier, you know, one of those hard cylinder wine gift boxes? But I can't find one that would be big enough for my msd. For shame, I had a friend that used a wine carrier for her 27cm. Jealous. I feel like violin cases are too big sometimes, even if you get a small one. I'm looking for the most compact carrier possible (thus the wine carrier). I wish I could fit my bjd into a flute case, but its not long enough.

I have a metal laptop briefcase (with a handcuff, 'cuz I'm hardcore) that I curl up my bjd and put her in it with padding. She can't lie flat in it, but its really protected. I want to make a coffin case, but I couldn't travel with it. It'll just be a side project for now.

For tinies, some will even fit in eye glasses cases! Very convenient.

    3. I generally just put a face-protector on them, put them in a pillow or a towel (my Soom tiny came in his own little sleeping bag pillow, which is really convenient), and then put them in my giant DKNY purse. I can easily fit a tiny or two in there, or one MSD. The bag is really high-quality and sturdy, but it is still a purse, so anything bigger gets sat down into my laptop bag with pillows. I could also use the old flute carrying case I had (it went over the hard flute case, so it's rather big), but I never really needed to since I generally don't like to take things that don't fit in my purse.

I'm planning on getting a Mega Gem soon, so... I need to figure out a way to transport that big hunk of resin. I don't think he'll even fit into my laptop bag. Maybe I'll try borrowing one of those small carry-on cases my family takes for short trips.

    4. I know i've seen bits and peices about this some where but ive looked all over and cant find it...
(feel free to re direct/move this to a better place)

Today I was walking throught target, for no real reason, And saw something that would be perfect for a dolly travel bag!
They were canvas yoga mat bags! they had artsy little designs on them and zipped up AND were SD sized! I figured that with a travel pillow any other sized dolls would fit, too. It was affordable, too only 20.00 usd or so. They dont have a bunch of pockets, but to me that's no big deal, I always have a huge purse with me anyway.

I started looking into this online and found a bunch of diffrent designs/patterns.

I figured that would be an upgrade from a computer bag, though that bag works perfect for holding all her crap ~

Have you ever stumbled upon something that would be perfect for transporting your lovlies? What do you currentlly keep or carry them in??

    5. I have this carpet bag from Avon, no less, that's perfect for MSDs & smaller - put pillows in & there's plenty of room for 3-4 tinies/MSDs & all their stuff!

    6. Currently I'm using a music stand bag that perfectly fits my 70cm guy. It's slim, zips up along the side just like a company's doll bag would, and it's got long straps and everything. xD I got it for $3 at a used book store.

    7. i'm still looking for cool and cute carrier bag as well :D

though i'm planning to buy the guitar case from dollmore , its hard to look for SD17 carrier bag :(
if anyone could give me a link to 70cm or 85cm (max) carrier bag that will be helpful :'3

    8. Well, before I got Dollmore's rolling case (which is a godsend, seriously), I was using a bag I'd gotten from Build-a-Bear Workshop during a promotion... haha ^^; I stuffed it with pillows and fabric and it ended up working out pretty well. I also, randomly, discovered that my purse actually fits the average MSD!

    9. Nice suggestion!

If I could find something similar in a more simple style I would probably purchase it. I need a proper case.

    10. I actually can carry my 60cm dolls and my 45cm doll in a simple messenger bag, but it may not be the safest way since it's not padded. I hear a flute carrying case (a soft bag-like case that carries the hard case) can work for smaller dolls (:

    11. I bought a picnic basket from a friend that moved away, right now my Johnny (SD) is sitting on it. If I go somewhere with both my dolls, maybe I'll carry one in that and the other in my kantele-bag (a Finnish instrument, I've got two, the smaller one is about as big as a SD).

    12. Those sewing machine or scrapbooking rolling cases can fit dolls. Sometimes Hobby Lobby puts them on sale, and when it's on sale, it's like half off, so $50 bucks.

    13. Also, hard sided suitcases work well too!

    14. I've had good luck with antique store and garage sale finds. Its a bit luck dependent, but if you go often something is sure to turn up! One of my favorites so far is a leather suitcase from 1919 if the lable inside is correct. Its just the right length for an SD to fit after I lined the sides in foam. For MSD's I have an old briefcase and a sofa-in-a-box-box carrier I made out of book board. My YSD that is arriving any day now will go in the case of one of those makeup sets they sell for cheap around the holidays. To modify it I took out all of the makeup trays and lined it with black velvet pillows.

    15. I think some of those ridiculously large purses would hold a doll well. I bought a giant beach bag which I have used to carry dolls in. However, my favourite things to carry my dolls in are old time-y looking luggage. I have an old suitcase basket that was the container of a pick nick set that I use to carry one SD, and just yesterday, I bought a large, hard, cardboard box shaped like a suitcase that I can put an SD in.

    16. I have a rolling sports back with a hard plastic bottom that I use for major travel. If the dolls are just going for a quick trip I have a big wicker basket with handles that the car seat belt will go through. I stole the basket idea from NayNayAnimeMom after seeing her just set down her basket at a meet after I spent fifteen minutes unpacking and unwrapping everybody.

    17. Seriously? Do they still sell carpet bags (that don't cost a fortune)? I haven't seen one in years..

      LM

    18. I usually use a bag for the photo tripod, it's quite convenient for carrying large dolls. I only add a face protection mask. As for smaller dolls - I prefer to carry them in big shoulder bags which I'm fond of:cheer

    19. I use a sports bag (which probably have a name in English), and it can hold several tinies plus their clothes. Works wonderful. :)

    20. Well, a friend of mine use a tennis bag. Others use a violin and guitar case.

At first, I use a big carton bag with blankets and pillows to carry my doll. That bag is the only big bag in which Rion fits >.< Later I buy a small suitcase, until I finally buy the real carrier from Soom :D
