Alternatives to doll carriers?

May 28, 2008

    1. Definitely wrap your doll in a pillow/bubblewrap/blanket/etc. If a heavy book falls hard against them, fingers, ears or fantasy parts could snap off. Also, a backpack can stain, if it's a dark color. I once put a doll in a black messenger bag and she had stains all over her face when I pulled her out.

I do often put my tinies or MSD girls in my tote bag when I go out, but I'm very careful. I think as long as you take proper precautions to keep your doll safe, it should be fine.

    2. My MSD fits snugly in a backpack as long as I'm very careful with it. I never really try to wrap her, though... That would probably help with the wig troubles some.

    3. I was reading some of the replies and I thought the yoga mat bag was a very good idea, while looking into it I found out there is some kind of event on yoga material going on in Amazon this month, with some sales and a lot of cute choices. I just thought I'd let you all know as well :3nodding: I'm definitely getting one for my upcoming SD boy!

    4. I was walking through Walmart one day, and saw a nice gothy rifle case, black with roses, flames, and a skull. Works great, plenty big enough for a 70cm doll.

    5. I use a older Camera Case ^-^ its a hard leather bag that has a flap that latches in two places over the front and i can fit one of my MSD's and pry 1 or 2 tinies in it all at once ^-^
as for my tinnie's i have a camera lens case. It is again made of leather and the inside is lined with soft fabric its basically a tube where one end opens up but attaches to itself using leather straps and a button.
I also have a head phone case that has wonderful padding on the inside.
but anywho what i've found works the best so far are Camera cases video cameras to be precise since they are designed to cary something large and heavy that needs a good amount of padding and to not be jarred about.

    6. I have actually carried around an msd sized doll around in a small purse. They are however, the only thing I carried in the purse and basically sat with their knees bent and their arms balancing them. It was an interesting experience. Normally though I just have Avian on my lap well I travel. Carina goes into her sleeping bag with something to protect her face and then into my suitcase.

    7. Sometimes I use a tote that I got as a free gift for purchasing perfume. The tote is padded really well and can easily fit 4 to 5 dolls depending on their size.
For larger BJDs, I use an oversized long burlap tote that I made(I put pillows on the bottom and foam on the inside for cushy protection).

    8. I have re-purposed an old violin case and turned it into a case for my dolls.

    9. The yoga bag is an awesome idea!! Ive been looking around at gym bags to carry an SD. I converted a tiny picnic basket into a case for my tiny delf![IMG]

He would have a face plate on when actually travelling of course :)

    10. For traveling, I have a big school type backpack that has a large slim padded pocket for a laptop or tablet on one side of the main compartment and another slim pocket on the opposite side. Plus, it has another large compartment on the outside, and several smaller pockets and compartments. Between that, and my hard sided carry on, I can easily get everything I need to take with me on a trip that can't be trusted to my checked luggage, with Lue sitting nicely in the main compartment with his little stuffed sheep. He usually has the whole main compartment to himself, as my stuff that I may need to access while traveling, easily fits in the padded pocket, or in the smaller outer compartment and pockets. With all the layers of pockets, plus my stuff like my checkbook, wallet, etc. he has plenty of cushioning. Sometimes, if I take a lightweight jacket or sweater, I'll put it to the main compartment with Lue, where it acts as extra cushioning.

His actual basic doll carrier, usually his coffin carrier, gets packed full with his fancy clothes, or shoes and props, etc., and gets packed in my checked luggage.

    11. My friend does this as well but with her art models and action figures and she says it works wonders.

    12. I know some folks who are planning to use those boxes what are for holding wine bottles for msds, I’ve had the idea to use a tripod bag with extra padding and I’ve used my collapsible soft box bag before for my friend to carry her SD mermaid to a meetup before. Right now I’m trying to modify a cute bag with a window so I have something functional and cute!

    13. Ive seen few places that would sell specific doll carriers. They seem really expensive ans I was searching dor alternatives.

And I came across tripod cases!
They are perfect for larger dolls and if you feel bougie, telescope carrier did wonders for my LS 73cm doll! Big enough to fit two!

What are some other ideas yall?

    14. I used to use a rolling scrapbooking case, but my larger dolls had to be folded up quite a bit to fit. These days I have a hard shell rolling suitcase. 24"-my largest ones have to bend over, but it fits most of them. I also use it for traveling. I pad them with towels.

    15. I have an SD bag and an MSD bag, but also a laptop backpack that fits 3 DDs in it. My Ying Long (old LS dragon) has to be transported in a massive hiking backpack with a pillow in it to support his tail and wings.

    16. My dolls cost a small fortune but more so very sentimentally important to me. I just laid out the cash for proper cases. I get people not wanting to or not being able to do that but I think it's important and something worth saving for.

Other solutions work fine for like carrying them around places for pictures or in your car, sure. But if you actually travel a lot and fly with them, it's risky to use something "good enough". In that scenario I'd say just bite the bullet and get a good case. It's your very precious baby you're transporting and you'd be completely devastated if it got crushed.

    17. I got a couple circuit/silhouette cases from Amazon for mine. They work well for bjds once you add padding like a pillow. They’re a good inexpensive option though I’d go for something more protective if you were traveling with one.

    18. We use locking aluminum equipment cases to transport dolls for shows, as they can fit in an airplane overhead locker but protect their contents.

For my own YoSD, I use a wine bottle case.
I have a padded wooden box that was sold as a decorative case but fits one or two MSDs perfectly.

My puki puki Tiny doll rides in a steel eyeglasses case, padded with fleece.

    19. I have a SD doll carrier that my friend got me second hand (i think it was made by Resin Soul or Bobobie and it came with their dolls way back when but I could be wrong) and a padded knitting bag to carry my MSDs and smaller crew members.

    20. I have a huge willow basket from hobby lobby that fits my 21in girl very comfortably. I have smaller basket for smaller dolls too.
