1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Am I the only one that thinks 1 BJD is enough?

May 30, 2013

    1.
    2. no, you're not the only one
      I do have a wishlist of dolls that I plan to buy someday (someday far in the future) but I am happy with just one doll, at least for now
      sometimes I feel like she gets lonely when I can't play with her so I really want to hurry up and get a second doll to keep her company but other times I feel like I wouldn't give her as much attention with another doll around and that she'd get sad

    3. Not for me.... as soon as I first laid eyes on a picture of a BJD (Volks SD13 Shiro, and his BFF, SD13 Tsukasa), I know I wanted a whole army of them. :love I had never been a doll-person for my first 35 years. So I said to myself, "Where have these guys been all my life??" At first I wanted just the 4 Tokyo Boys in the series, but I knew I wanted all four. Eight years later I have 37 dolls in here & I adore them all.

    4. You mentioned that when you get something new, you might care less for the old one. I was worried about that too. I put a Dollmore Ipsae on an AOD body on layaway, but while she was on layaway I got a Chocolate bobobie Pandora. ( she was only 120 on the marketplace!!)). I received the Pandora first and fell in love with her after some modifications. I was worried though that when I got the Ipsae, i would love her less. Ipsae was one of the first dolls i fell in love with.

      When Ipsae came, I fell in love with her too, but i didn't love the Pandora any less. I have several floating heads now and a body that needs to be assembled for a Loongsoul LingJing and I love each head for their own quirks and personality. :D

    5. I used to want literally dozens of dolls, but these days, I'm happy with just my one AoD MSD. I have others, but I'm trying to sell them (gotta wait for Marketplace access).

      I do want to make my own dolls, though. I've seen some amazing OOAK models, and while I know I may not be able to post about them here, I'm very interested in the creation process.

      Honestly, part of it is money; I seriously can't afford $300 for a new doll, but I have most of the supplies for making one-offs. I'll do what I can. ^^;

    6. For the past two years I've only ever had one doll at a time in the house, and one of those years the same doll period. While I known that I want more, if someone walked up to me right now and said "This is it. Just this one." I'd be perfectly content. I suppose that's why I've dragged my feet on actually purchasing the other dolls on my wishlist.

      I have to admit though, just having a single doll hasnt made the hobby any cheaper for me. While a lot of people pour the majority of their doll funds into getting more dolls, mine goes towards dealer clothes/etc. I could probably honestly claim I've spent about the same amount of money on my single doll as my friend who owns five.

    7. I was all "Oh, I'll get only that one - ever" when I bought my Luken, back in 2008.

      Within the first year, I bought three dolls altogether and now, I got 14, with the 15th on its way. It's not that I'm actively trying to get as many dolls as I can cram into my tiny flat. It's just - well, when a friend of yours decides to sell THAT doll, the one you've secretly been calling "Nat" since you first saw her cos she's really, REALLY channeling Black Widow so hard ... You might not really be into female dolls but you just don't let anyone else buy that doll cos you never know whom she may end up with and she's just too cool to let her move out of reach, you know? ;)

    8. I love having a fairly large number of dolls. I've been in the hobby four years and since starting, I've bought dolls at a rate of about three a year. That's the right amount for me - it's enough time to make a doll into its character, then start planning for the next one. But now I'm unemployed I've had to slow down and just work on the dolls I have. That's OK by me though as there's plenty of stuff to be getting on with - I have a to-do list that goes on forever!

    9. When I first took the plunge into the BJD hobby in early 2010, I felt that I would just have one doll...I had other OT dolls, after all, and I only wanted one BJD to see what it was like. She remained my lone BJD for a good 6 months. Then I decided I needed another--after all, she was probably lonely. And then...somehow...I have seven total and looking out for one more. They are all tinies, so they don't take up an excessive amount of room, but I never would have thought when I first started that I would have this many. Yet...I wouldn't be able to give any of them up.

    10. I knew right from the beginning that one wouldn't be enough, that the first one would want a friend(s). My very first doll order was two full dolls together. Why fight the inevitable?

      They have been coming home on a 1 doll a year basis since then. Until this year. I dunno what happened. I actually tried to downsize my collection and somehow ended up ordering 4 dolls instead. Almost half my collection in one year, and it's only the beginning of June!

      That said, if I really had to... I dunno if 1 would be enough. Absolute minimum I could do I think would be 1 SD and 1 MSD. I love the two sizes for very different reasons and don't think I could pick one over the other.

    11. One doll? Sure if it makes you happy and you feel content, then best of luck to you!
      I personally couldn't do it. I have so many ideas to do and characters to make; and you can do so much and have more fun when you've got two or three or more. I'm the kinda person who does a doll up to fit a theme or certain image in my head, and that doll gets a set style. Having only one doll, I would find it frustratingly limited in my options. I could only buy pretty dresses, or casual clothes, or boyish things, or fantasy-forest or Victorian-time traveller, or magical school girl, and so on.
      Honestly, I don't know if I'll ever stop buying dolls, so long as the companies keep making them and I can find characters!

    12. I don't live in the UK but I agree with you. I'm actually in the process of downsizing. I start feeling really overwhelmed when I have a certain amount of dolls. After I sell all the ones I have up for sale I will have three. I hope to stay with that for awhile! I don't want a real collection. Just a few that I'm really doing a lot with. Then I can focus more. Build their characters, wardrobes, take more pics of each of them etc. I really think having a lot of dolls takes the fun right out of the hobby. And I don't want that!!!!!! But I would really LOVE if I could just have one. But I don't see that happening :)

    13. I am loving this topic! While I too try to downsize from time to time, it's more to rotate the dolls I merely like to add dolls I really love. Sometimes those promo photos don't do the doll justice, or what I had in mind for a character. I've done the same with my outfits as well.

      i really admire hobbyists who can keep their collections under ten-- but my tendencies are to let my collector take over, lol! :)

    14. Hey whatever works for you : )
      I only wanted one doll for the same reasons you had. But when my husband got a raise, I was then able to consider another one -- and I think if you have many premade characters it's easier to justify getting more dolls because you're making those characters real/tangible.
      If something happened though and I had to sell them, I'd be okay keeping just one which would be the one I love the most. : )

    15. Sometimes I wish I could be happy with one, but it turns out there are different things I like about the looks and size of each of my dolls so I find it hard to limit myself.

    16. I told myself 1 BJD was enough when I first started...xD Now I have 6 of them and two more on the way....oi..... @_________@;;

    17. ^^THIS! Amir was my first, and supposed to be my only, and he was, until Loki arrived 5 months later. Amir is still my favorite (well, he and Loki battle it out!) after 5 years. It didn't lessen the bond to older ones for me, it was more like expanding their circle of friends and family.

    18. I had one for a while, which was really handy- only thinking of one doll re. clothes, props etc. But I get bored easily -_- so found I had more fun having two that I could alternate between, depending upon my mood. But as they were both girls- I needed a boy! So had three- and so it goes. I now have 5 very different dolls (male, female, SD, tiny, DD) which I find helps maintain my interest. But of course, if one doll is enough for you, go for it! It's sounding quite good to me too at the moment, but I don't think I could re-home any of my current crew, I <3 them too much lol

    19. I knew I wanted more than one from the start, but I can see the appeal of only owning one special doll. You'd save on space and could spoil the heck out of it with a lavish wardrobe and tons of wigs & eyes! Everyone collects differently and at their own pace. I think when you first join the hobby it's easy to get a bit overwhelmed & swept away by all the choices out there. Sometimes collectors impulse buy. I've done it and it didn't work out; I sold the dolls I bought on impulse. Being happy with a single doll is not strange at all. You just know what you like and have specific tastes! Nothing wrong with that :)

    20. I did feel the same at first. As I live in the UK too (England). When I got my first ever doll, I didn't realise how long i'd have to wait and how much custom charges I would have. It kind of put me off buying another one. But BJD's are kind of like tattoos to me. You can't have just 1. They are addictive. I was going to have just 2-3 but now I am onto planning my 5th!
