Am I the only one who think company produced is enough?

Aug 29, 2013

    1. I have fallen in love with some fullsets like Fairyland Chloe and DollZone Hid, but when ever I think about getting that fullset, my mind yells out: "Somebody else probably has this same fullset. Why would you want the same exact kind of doll, when you can fully customize it?"
Fullsets are amazing and you really can see the amount of work the artists and sewers have put up on them, but for me: BJD's as a hobby is getting a doll, which many other people already have and making it to completely unique and different :)

But I can understand the ones that want the complete fullset with no changes at all. If somebody has used time to create something that beautiful/handsome, then why not use time and money to admire the work of art someone has made.

    2. I'm pleased with some company's default face-up but not all of them.
Sometimes I really want to have them customized. To be exactly out of my dream.

    3. Yes! My grail doll is a reasonably priced Bluefairy Olive fullset. For those who don't know, these fullsets are not limited, nor is the sculpt or skin colour. I love the default school uniform that all their dolls wear, I love the default shoes, I love the default wig and eyes and I especially love the default face-up. So that's it! I own Bluefairy limited dolls, I could have ordered her any time but I haven't yet. She'd my grail, she is perfect as she is.

    4. I cannot fathom never changing a doll's outfit - it's hard enough for me to not change wigs every week LOL although w/several of my dolls they have a definite preference for one wig ~ha~ So although I like full-sets when they seem a reasonable price for what you get, that hardly means the doll will only ever be seen like that. I've got 5 full-set dolls (believe that's right) - I change out their outfits, clothes, wigs ALL the time but I like having their original stuff. I even went & BOUGHT the full-set stuff for my Mo after getting him in the MP - of course he did not have a face-up so I did send him off for a custom job).
I don't DO face-ups, so I usually buy dolls already done, either the company or if 2nd-hand then whatever they have. I do have 4 dolls (2 of them heads) that need face-ups & of them 2 will have their original one changed. Wish I could do it myself.
I CAN sew - am a costumer & tailor - so if I buy doll clothes, full-sets or otherwise, they have to be something I myself can't make (or from hard-to-find material), or cheaper than I could do myself. Or sometimes I might get something out of pure laziness....LOL

    5. hm, it depends. my first doll i picked straight from the company with the default face-up and i chose a wig almost exactely like the picture for him.
but then i started to see something 'different' in the dolls then the companies did with them. i liked the molds but i fell in love with the blank faces.
at the same time i bought another head with the fu and another one with a self made face-up from the other owner.
i realized i wanted to give them an unique appearence, an appearance which i created.
since then i only buy blank dolls which i can paint, customize, get clothes for.
i really like the yellow latidolls fullsets, especially the tiny clothes. i also like fairyland's ital lord of the ice fullset. i just think thefullsets are so overpriced, which is sad. i really don't want to spend 300 bucks for an outfit which i will change for sure. I'd love to get the extra scar head and the arm part but oh well. let's see what happens.
so long story short, no i don't really think what the company produced is enough for me. ^^

    6. My grail doll (Pharaohs curse ver. Sophie [Bastet] latidoll) would make me feel like that. If I could get her exactly as she was in her picture with grey skin. Boom. That'd be it. I wouldn't change a thing. I love that whole sculpt, outfit, look. I can't believe I missed her by not being in the bjd hobby yet only by a few months! I have a feeling I would never see her on the market place and if she had all her stuff then she'd probably be outrageously priced. lol

    7. I feel the same way! I love BF Olive. I have always adored her, her fullset face-up, wig... everything about it is perfect in my eyes. I tend to think this way about Bluefairy in general. I love the style of their dolls, so much that I think I'd be perfectly content having them just the way the company produces them - with the exception of eyes (I would certainly purchase a more vibrant eye color or better eye in the same color).

Just waiting for her to be made in Misty Rose... O_O

    8. I think if I could get my hands on a full set Beauty and Beast from Soom I would leave them alone! I mean they would get some extra clothes and accessories of course but the face ups and wigs and eyes are just so gorgeous IMO. Sigh. I can't confirm this though as I can't even find owner pictures. But it really makes me wish I knew about BJDs last January :)

    9. I don't like the idea of keeping the doll the same as the company's, in most cases. (As was stated by someone else, I'd keep Alberta's full-set as-is.) I do imagine though the one who put all of it together would be very happy about those who keep the doll as they envisioned it. That would be a nice complement, and sometimes I do find company work to be very impressive, but I like to create too, and don't want to stick to something someone else already made. So I guess I can see both, I personally don't (usually) find company produced as you say it to be 'enough', though. I think, as others have said, it depends on the person and the doll.

    10. I would prefer to buy dolls who come with a faceup I am happy with already as I'm kind of lazy, lol. Also I would have problems removing a already good faceup. I would have to get a blank doll to paint then ^^. But I haven't seen many dolls I like as a fullset, I would want to change eyes, wig and clothes :).

    11. I love seeing fullsets, but I often feels like it does not suit me. Call that attitude snobby, I don't know, but I feel I like my dolls to be truly unique and suited to my tastes. Maybe I'm not so much mainstream-tasted so most of the fullset are not so appealling to me, but I do know they are beautifully made.
I think that's partly a reason why company are offering blank dolls and blank heads, for us to create a character out of the blue. While on the other hand they offer fullset for people who like a character for itself, as depicted, and starts creating something with their imagination rather than their hands?

    12. I think it really depends. I have fallen in love with some company fullsets and with others i want them to look entirely different

    13. I actually felt this way about my Soom Nephlin. She has been in her default eyes, wig and outfit since I got her. She needs shoes still since I don't have her dragon paws on, but to me she is perfection. She is the only one of my dolls that I haven't wanted to change a thing. All of my other dolls have changed wigs, eyes and outfits quite often. Especially my Kdelf girls. I seem to change them up the most.

    14. SDG Carol was that way for me.. but I thought she was too big me at the time.. I could so kick myself for letting her go.. but she made someone else super happy. :|

My other MSD sized dolls are all FCS so I was able to pick the look of their face up to the idea I had in my head.

The dolls that are SOLD OUT :...(, are usually fullsets or even just the doll themselves & enough to make one drool !!

    15. My dolls are based off of characters that I already created, and then I have found sculpts that match the character the best. I think it's fun to take on the challenge of creating the perfect character off of a basic sculpt. On the other hand, there are dolls that I have found that inspired me to make a character from, just so I can buy the doll. With those sculpts, I wouldn't change a thing, but then again, it takes something away from ownership, in my opinion.

It does depend on the person though. When you aren't like me, and characters come after the doll is purchased, or you just buy the dolls for the doll. Then they are best the way they are.

    16. I really admire some fullsets and I certainly don't think you have to personalize BJDs for them to look good.

    17. Totally agree, plus BJDs are not exactly two a penny, so you are unlikely to run into another full-set unlike human clothing from a chain store. I have a mixture of blank, company face-ups, and two full sets. One of which has had everything changed, one is just having the default eyes changed and I have just ordered another full-set.

    18. I've never bought a completely fullset doll (except when running splits), so I guess my answer would have to be 'no' :sweat

For me, the issue is that my doll's characters have very specific clothing styles, so no fullset doll has even come close to being 'right' for them.

I do almost always get company face-ups, though. The default face-up usually defines how I think of the sculpt. I have tweaked a couple, though - my Alex has freckles added on top of her default face-up, and my bronze Heliot has some brown eyeshadow to cover up the default blue (which didn't suit his character). I'm thinking of tweaking my bronze Topaz's face-up as well - she has so much blush she looks sunburnt!

    19. i love to customize my dolls...thats why i never think to buy a fullset. but if i have a lot of money, maybe i will buy my favorite dolls fullset and buy the same doll nude to customize....that will be super fun!! :D

    20. Personally I have only seem one single full-set that I considered to be a perfect fit for one of my characters. It's hard for me to think "this is enough" or "that's all I need" when looking at full-sets. There would always be something I would like to change. A lot of things, most of the time.
