Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. An Alice In Wonderland Theme Brewing in Companies

Jan 3, 2015

1. Well I personally don't nind the Alice in Wonderland theme. Although I would probably appreciate some more unique ones a little more, I still like that they have the option of Alice. I don't know if that will be the theme of 2015 per se, but I wouldn't doubt that a lot of compaines will keep it going.

2. Actually, Nympheas Doll did make a caterpillar, and he is adorable! Unfortunately, he is sold out.

As for the Alice theme.....I loved the book, and I loved the original Disney movie, but I'm burnt out now, since everything from dolls to clothes to jewelry to accessories has exploded in Alice themes in the last 10 or so years. Probably didn't help that I managed Spencer Gifts when the Tim Burton film and the goth Alice fads hit so hard. Before all of that, before it was so overdone, I would have LOVED to have owned an Alice BJD character, though how cool would it be to have some of the random little weirdo flowers or birds or oysters as tiny event dolls?? :D

3. I actually just got my Red Alice. :) I wanted an Alice outfit - in red - for Franziska, my first and so far only big girl because of a story I'm writing right now. One part of it is basically a "variation" of "Through the Looking Glass", featuring "Little Alice" and the Red Queen. Red Alice also has her "partner", Jack of Spades (still working on him - next step is to get him a proper face-up). Maybe not very original, that Alice theme, but I don't care since I have some pretty personal reasons for wanting my Red Alice. :)

4. CloakedSchemer - That is a cute little caterpillar! Okay, it would bee neat to see more!

I suppose I completely missed out on all the AiW stuff, chalk it up to having no internet at the time or being busy with a kid and ill parents. The dolls are all new to me, since I only became an owner last summer. So, there are probably plenty of people like me who are just fascinated with so many themes and trends with bjds, joining the party late and all. At first I was like, wow, there sure are a lot of dolls with tattoos, and boots. lol

So, what I am saying is, I could think it was a new trend just joining the hobby. I think it's easier to notice something that appeals to your taste. :kitty1

5. I never really understood the hype about Alice in Wonderland. I mean, yeah I enjoyed the Tim Burton movie. I could just never get behind the Alice-themed BJDs that came out during that time (I was honestly kind of frightened of Pipos Cheshire cats--and I still am ><; ).

6. I am a huge fan of AIW but when anything is overdone you have to realistically give it a rest @.@ For the customers sake and I would think your own sanity, move on to something else. There are so many other things they could either expand upon or initiate that there's really no need to rehash the same theme over and over again. And as much as I love Alice, I know it's had its time.

7. I LOVE Alice in Wonderland, and I honestly hope that BJD companies never stop making the Alice-themed dolls! The more the better!

8. Me too! I am still new to bjds so all AiW themes are new to me!

9. I love Alice in Wonderland! I wrote a couple papers on it in my literature classes in university! :D

But most of the theme dolls are very disney-storybook in style. I'd like to see a company take a more anarchist style to reflect the undertones in the original story. Alice's fantastical dream-journey was a scathing criticism of the Victorian school system (... and religion... and the gender divide...)

(The Mad Hatter was the patriarchy and that's why he and Alice hate each other so much)

10. The characters in Alice in Wonderland are endearing because it is open to interpretation. I love Alice in Wonderland and am always happy to see other studios/dollmaker/artist come out with their own versions. I discovered BJD when I was looking for Alice themed dolls and came across the outfits at Dollhearts. The rest is history. I've been collecting a list of the doll companies and clothes makers that have dabbled in the Alice theme.
For those who actually like Alice in Wonderland...

EDIT: the one link I provided may or may not be the extent of the Alice offerings. Doll companies usually release 3~6 characters while the clothes makers are the same. But Pipos, Rosen Lied and DollHeart have really gone over board with their Alice theme, releasing up to about 15~30 items.

11. yuan_mdx - Thanks for that list! That is awesome you organized that to share. :thumbup I kinda wish now there was a spot somewhere for doll themes and links like an elf theme, centaur, insect, winged dolls, vampires, ect...... good job!

12. Thank you for all the links yuan_mdx. It is the 150th Anniversary this year and many places are celebrating, not just BJD companies. I shall have to look at the links when I have more time. Wonderful!

13. I just think the Alice theme is a good one that inspires lots of companies and artists... AND it's popular with buyers, so the companies and artists are happy that way, too.

It is just very recognizable, too. And fun... with Alice and the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit and a TON of other cool characters that can be interpreted in so many ways.

There aren't so many themes that are so flexible and recognizable and as popular as the Alice themes...

And although I'm not a HUGE Alice fan, I'm not tired of the companies doing it. I like seeing how they interpret it. They all seem to have fun doing the Alice themes.

Plus, there are always tons of different themes. I think the companies look hard for new themes. but not all appeal to them or to their buyers... I know some individuals would like to see certain things, but the companies can't just think about one or two people... they need to do things that appeal to a lot of their buyers and ALSO appeal to their artists so that they can do a good job with it.

14. The Alice theme is never ending >w< At least there is a lot of variety in those interpretations! Though I could do with more grown up looking Cheshire's, most of them are kid sculpts sigh

15. It would be cool is a company like Soom would do a big, mature doll with Cheshire cat parts. That, I would love to see.

16. I'm mostly ambivalent towards the theme. My problem is that, rather than getting sick of the theme, I just kind of skim past it when I'm going through a company's line up. It's like, "Oh here's more Alice in Wonderland stuff. There's probably nothing worth my time here," and I move on. Part of it too is that I have really strong memories of certain retellings, both good and bad (although noticeably not of the Disney versions) and so it's weird putting them together with unrelated dolls. I think the other part is that I just liked Alice Through the Looking Glass more than Alice in Wonderland! I like it when songs and whatnot use some ideas as themes, though I'm a bit eh on the idea of getting more new versions.

On that note, I was also kind of pleasantly surprised to see that Luts' summer theme was Alexander Dumas' The Three Musketeers. Since there's a lot of culturally important public domain stories in both the East and the West, I think it's good that they're expanding on the theme! But even still I might have to punch something if they ever made a Les Miserables set.
