Anyone not into anime, but into BJDs?

Aug 19, 2009

    1. Funny thing...I love collecting Asian antiques. I have for YEARS. BUT, later I became a DOLL collector ~ mostly German dolls. And then, I discovered BJD ~ vicariously through my DOLL WORLD. The Asian/Japanese thing wasn't a factor at all, but I am SO pleased that my hobbies HAVE merged.
That said, I am NOT a fan of anime.

    2. Yep, me too, not at all a fan of anime....

    3. i fell out of the anime craze after they cancelled sailor moon but i still love my BJD :P You are not alone!

    4. I'm not interested in anime at all but I'm still obsessed with BJDs xD

    5. No, you aren't alone. I never got into Japanime/manga when it become so popular back when I was in high school, oh 15+ years ago. The only one I ever knew the name of was Sailor Moon >.< However, I've loved dolls all my life and got back into collecting certain face molds of Barbie, I have a few porcelain dolls, and eventually found my way to Asian made dolls through an MLP forum. I do have an interest in the Japanese culture but that had absolutely nothing to do my dolls; it was there long before they even came into the picture.

    6. Never owned a doll and never been a fan of anime..
but BJDs literally took my life! :D

    7. I am super late on this thread, but I just joined DoA, so I'm catching up, forgive me.

I have never really been into anime. I used to watch it a bit in grade school but it's never really been my "thing".

Dolls, however, I have ALWAYS loved. First Barbie, then American Girl/Bitty Babies, then porcelain dolls, then Tonners/fashion dolls. I also loved collecting Breyer horses and Beanie Babies. So I'm no stranger to collecting :P

Once I saw BJDs (ironically at an anime convention with my husband, who IS an anime fan), I was done. I love them! And really, unless it's a DD or other really obviously "anime" sculpt, they usually don't remind me of anime at all.

    8. I'm not sure where I stand on this subject because I'm nor into or not into anime/manga. Occasionaly I will watch an anime series, or read a manga series...but I'm usually not really into it. It's just another thing to watch or read.

    9. Aside from watching Sailor Moon sometimes when I was younger and I remember watching a few anime movies some years ago.. I'm not really "into" it. I don't keep up or follow the trends.

But I do love BJDs :) All types are beautiful but I do have my preferences on which type I'd personally collect.

    10. Aside from Chobits, I'm really not in to anime at all. I like manga a little more, but again, not that in to it. Surprisingly, though, I have a very manga-esque style of drawing, and have actually receieved paid commissions for my art. I'm part-Japanese and have been speaking the language (albeit not very fluently) for quite a while now, so maybe my cultural background influenced my taste in dolls...? I doubt it, though. I have amassed a collection of antique dolls, and have always liked them, but BJDs are just... really special to me. And while I've noticed their manga-like features, they blend manga with realism in a unique way to me.

    11. Apart from *one* character, I'm not into anime, as in, I don't even like he series he comes from. I used to be into anime when I was younger, but I grew out of it in high school. Even this character breaks the fourth wall and speaks against things like anime and escapism.

I'm also not really a doll collector either, and don't even have a collector mindset. (And I hate having too many possessions.) Especially the ABJDs, I don't really like how anime they look which made it really hard for me to find a doll that I liked. At the moment, I am waiting on only one doll, my only one, because not only am I not interested in collecting dolls, one of the biggest motivation for getting it in the first place was to pay tribute to my favorite character. And as with many people here, the dolls seem to be a source of comfort for them and to me, being reminded of the character makes me really get down and think through problems to get things done. (And helps to avoid obsessions that one could easily escape into, such as video games or anime.) It makes everything better.
      :)

    12. Right here!
I used to be into anime, but I got out of it 2 years before I got my first bjd :3 I actually found out about bjds when I was into Sims xD
I do like asian culture alot though. It is unrelated though,as I prefer old style french and victorian clothing for my dollies.

    13. I was into a lot of anime and manga titles back when I got involved with the hobby (was exposed to the hobby via anime conventions and friends who liked anime and BJDs), but not so much nowadays. There hasn't been any titles in the past few years that's really interested me, but I still love manga art in general.

    14. I've watched some animes and my kids like a few anime movies but otherwise I'm not really into it either.

    15. im neutral with anime - there was only one comic book that i kind of liked a long time ago,... but other than that I'm not into that kind of stuff at all.

I am more of a classic doll person - i like antique looking dresses and sets and such

    16. I enjoy some anime...but I wouldn't really way I was really into it. I got into this hobby for completely different reason, and I tend to prefer doll sculpts that don't really match up with the anime style.

    17. I'm not into anime or manga. I used to draw manga eventrough I didint read it at all. When I was more into asian stuff, I tried to read lots manga but I didint like them.

    18. I actually love anime, but I find I don't really like the partially anime-stylized BJD sculpts as much. Unless they are 100% anime-styled.

    19. I'm not into anime and anything asian as such. apart from the fact that they're beautiful people to look at and their babies so amazingly cute.

I didn't get into BJDs until I found out there were some that had more human facial features than manga and unearthly creatures. I love bjds that look human. the more lifelike the better.

    20. I despise anything remotely "weebo/otaku"... I used to watch an anime or two (Death Note, Pokemon if that counts?) but I hate the relation between rabid otaku and bjd.
