Anyone not into anime, but into BJDs?

Aug 19, 2009

    1. Me neither. I don't really care for it. What really ticks me off is that I'm Korean so other anime lover's automatically assume I like it too. I don't, and I really, really hate it when they see me draw and ask me to draw some anime character I've never heard of. It pisses me off. I don't draw anime, I don't like anime and I will never like anime. Period.

    2. I'm new here, so don't be shy in letting me know if a question like this already exists. To make things clear, I don't dislike all anime, but I'm also not a fan. I do however have a few select that I love. These are: "Speed Racer," "Sonic the Hedgehog" (in which I'm a hardcore fan of), "Bobo-bo-bobo-bo," (Forgive me if the title's wrong), and last, but not least, "Fullmetal Alchemist." I currently own two BJDS, the first, an HZ "Wangye" and the second, an Angel of Dream, "Jiasha."

    3. I don't care for anime and I have a BJD, but just a little Pukipuki. The bigger dolls I think are lovely but the I only see myself ever having tinies so maybe I'm just weird.

    4. I don't dislike anime, but I'm not a hardcore fan of it. Like any other medium, there's some titles I like for the same reasons I tend to like anything -- fun/interesting stories, maybe interesting visuals. I'm not fond of the assumption some people make that I MUST be a hardcore anime fan because I collect dolls for the same reason I get annoyed that people assume I MUST want children because I'm female, but people tend to grasp the reality of the situation if they talk to me more than briefly in passing -- and if it's just in passing, well, I can't be bothered to worry about it too much.

    5. I like studio Ghibli, Escaflowne and some short anime-movies I've seen, but overall I'm not a fan. To me, these dolls have nothing to do with manga or anime, they're simply beautiful pieces of resin.

    6. I love a lot of anime and manga. I love good stories and interesting characters, animated or not doesn't matter to me. I hate it when people lump all anime together. Anime is not a genre, it is a different medium to present stories.
But honestly... that has nothing to do with me collecting dolls.

    7. Quite a few people here discovered BJD's through Anime or Anime Conventions (myeslf included) so there are quite a few hard-core anime/manga fans who collect BJDs. But there are just as many people who love the dolls and have zero interest in anime.

    8. Regenlief - Off topic, but BEST ICON EVER.

On topic: I'm not really an anime fan anymore. I have a few series' that I watch, but most of the anime I enjoyed died with the nineties. -sadface- I think I like my dolls as a creative outlet. I tend to steer away from the more anime-ized dolls and companies, because they're not really my thing. About the most 'anime' I get are the Fairyland Feeple. (Speaking of, if they ever did Chloe in a tan skin... -fans self-)

The thing to remember is that people collect dolls for all different reasons. There's not one interest that leads to them, nor is there one way to collect them. The best thing about this hobby is that it is so individualised. There's very few ways to 'do it wrong'. (Even then, the person spent the money, so it's their right to 'do it wrong' if they wish.)

No one I knew assumed (aside from my father, and only then because he'd seen people in Japan with Dollfie Dreams and asked me if my dolls were similar) that my hobby was to do with anime. They all thought it was me being my usual, eccentric self.

    9. I love anime, and I love bjd dolls, but the two are not correlated, in my opinion. I didn't fall into dolls because of anime, nor vise versa. Not all bjds are anime-related or resemble anime characters or stereotypes, after all.

    10. I love my dolls, but I don't care for anime. I don't have anything against it, I just have no interest in it at all. My sister is into it, I've tried to watch with her, but all I see are flashing pictures and plotlines I can't seem to follow.

I don't think the dolls are really anime related at all, but maybe I see that because I go for the more realistic ones and don't care much at all for the anime style ones. I can appreciate a well done anime doll, but I have no desire to own one.

    11. I like some animes and some mangas, but I like books and real-films too, and horses and much more things. And I have BJDs. But I dont think that they have much to do with my liking for anime and manga.
Yeah I discovered these Dolls on some Anime/Manga-Fansites, but I think BJDs are much much more then "Anime-Fan-Dolls" and I dont think that everyone who likes bjd's have to like anime/manga too. But I dont think too, that everyone who likes anime/manga likes ALL animes/mangas...

    12. I liked anime once... in high school. But the novelty wears off when it's all you ever hear about. Not only that, but I hate it when people do the whole "You have *got* to watch this!" ....After a while, anime no longer really appealed to me.

I am however, greatly interested in BJDs. While I don't have one yet, I am getting my first doll (head) very soon.

Honestly, I fail to see much link between the two. Sure, the dolls are a bit stylized (however others lean more towards realism), and yeah Volks has the dollfie dream that *does* conform to the anime style... but it seems to me that its the shallow connection that Asian=Anime, which I find absurd.

So to answer the question: No, I am not what constitutes as "into anime"--though I have a series or two that I liked--but I am very much "into" this hobby.

    13. <<Stands nervously in corner>> My name is Mariano and I am NOT a fan of Anime or BJDs that look like they steped right out of a Japanese comic strip with the giant eyes and akwardly styled wigs in weird colors. <<Sits back down and beathes a sigh of relief>>

Ok all jokes aside, I am glad someone brought up this topic because I thought for a long time that I was the only one who just doesn't care for those types of dolls. I know this type of doll originated from Asia but I think there is an unusual preponderance of dolls that fit that mold flooding the market. There are companies whose entire doll catalogue seem to look like the Manga type Anime characters.

It was hard enough trying to find a doll that looks even remotely like me (Black) far less for features that are not all that Asian Anime looking. Iplehouse is really one of the only companies that I have come across who makes molds that, with the right coloring, could actually be made into believable dolls of ethnicities other than Asian Anime. However there is the extra challenge of the fact that any doll which is darker cost so much more than the basic sculpt on its' own.

I have seen some other companies like Dollzone who are moving closer to sculpts that I think are slightly more ethnically nuetral and can be customized through face up and skin tones, into any type of doll character that you could want.

I hope in fucture that the doll companies will look to produce more sculpts in more colors that will energize the market place and give collectors even more options at customization. until then I guess i am stuck with buying Iplehouse dolls only. Then again, there are far worst things in life lol

    14. I'm a fan of anime, but my dolls have nothing to do with it. I don't like anime-styled dolls very much, for me the two things are separately enjoyed. =P I like my dolls to have cute round little noses and pouty lips.

    15. I used to be a giant anime fan in early high school, but I sort of moved away from it. I much prefer watching real people now, because there are so many subtle little expressions in body language and faces that get lost in anime. Don't get me wrong, I'll go to conventions to spend time with my friends and watch the occasional series (about one or two a year, mostly), but I simply enjoy it as I would any other story-telling medium. (IMO, there's been a dramatic decrease in anime that's actually entertaining, unique, and exists primarily to tell a story, and not to sell as many body pillows as possible)

My interest in BJD's actually picked up as my interest in anime waned, since I had money to spend on my own characters, which are now represented by my BJD's. I was actually introduced to BJD's at an anime convention, but just brushed them off as weird giant dolls; after I lost interest in the anime fandom, I came back to take a closer look at the big weird customizable dollies that some anime fans like to own.

    16. Into BJD's, not into anime. I have to keep checking how to spell anime in fact. Haaa

I'm not against it. Mildly curious, but no time to explore it right now.

For good or bad in your opinion, my guess is that the connection is only barely understood by a growing number of people who discover bjd from other avenues. They will pick up on it after a little time. It would be interesting to know what percentage of collectors now still have anime character relationships of some sort through their dolls.

    17. Add me to that list. I'm not into anime/manga or anything like that. I came into the BJD world through fashion dolls and seeing BJDS in FDQ and Haute Doll. Although I do like some of the big eyed anime type sculpts, it's just because I think they are cute.

    18. I've seen maybe 6 anime series in my lifetime so, no, I'm not really a fan. I was starting to feel like I was part of a very isolated minority in that dolls and anime/manga seem so deeply intertwined, so it's nice to see I'm not the only one. Sometimes, it's hard to get involved in certain discussion threads for dolls because there are so many anime references being thrown around and I'm left scratching my head in confusion.

I'm thinking "surely I can't be the only one who doesn't get this," so horray for finding others! :)

Like a couple of folks have mentioned, my tastes also gravitate towards the more lifelike sculpts, and the big-eyed cartoony ones are not my style.

    19. just like me, I just like bjd thats all...
