Are ball joints ugly?

Sep 30, 2008

    1. It personally took me quite a while to get used to the joints. But soon after I've realized that they're easily hidden by outfits, or at least made much much more subtle by them, I've come to terms with the joints. :D

    2. I find ball joints very attractive.
I'd rather have lots of joints than a barbie body that cannot pose at all.

    3. I think traditional single ball joints look good, it's the double joints that I dislike.

    4. In my opinion i love the ball joints.. I don't like barbie and they are definitely not appealing. Buuuutttt ball jointed dolls are beautiful and have so many more characteristics than any other doll ive seen... You can change the hair and eyes and faceup and I absolutely love that!

    5. I think ball joints have their charm~ but, I gotta admit, in some poses, they can look kind of awkward. I don't think ball joint are ugly.
I find it funny when people photoshop their pics to hide the ball joints lolol.

    6. I feel exactly the same. I like how useful double joints are, but I don't like them aesthetically and want to cover them up with clothing. Traditional spherical ball joints are really pretty to me, though, especially with blushing.

    7. I have never even thought of the joints at all. I have always just accepted them and actually thought they are beautiful.

    8. Sometimes I dont like the joints, but, to say frankly, it's not the matter of the very fact that joints do exist. It's a matter of type. I absolutely dislike some kinds of knee/elbow joints and pay much attention to the hips area. I can either dislike or simply adore those joints - the same is with the body itself, i can love the sculpt or totally dislike it.
As for wrists and feeet, i think that those joints are really lovely and natural in almost all their versions

but jointed fingers is what i really don't like. they kill the elegance which is more important for me than changing finger poses. i'd rather have more additional posing hands.

    9. The ball joints can be weird, but after you get used to them you find them cute! Don't worry about other people opinion, just focus on your own own interest :)

    10. It depends on the joint design for me. I find some ball joints really appealing, so much so that I like to leave those dolls in short sleeves and shorter bottoms to show off their joints, haha. But others I REALLY dislike. I can't stand the elbow joints of Soom Mini Gems! Dx I really like Soom for the most part, but I find those joints so unappealing for some reason. Also a lot of LUTS' thigh joints bother me, especially the Kid Delf original and multi bodies. I just hate those lol.
Now for joints I LOVE... single-jointed dolls with large ball joints, like Dollmore Alexia. I also really like the design of Volks double joints, on bodies like the SDM and SDGr.
Sooo it really depends for me, but on the whole I like the aesthetic of ball joints, and I don't know if I'd want silicone dolls because they wouldn't really have that doll-y feel for me!

    11. I find some joints more attractive than others... and I mean, sometimes you sacrifice a little one way or the other when you're looking at aesthetics vs. poseability... Like, I do prefer a sculpted single-piece hand to a jointed hand, but I also dress one of my dolls in shorts most of the time and I think his knees (and elbows) are cute even though they certainly don't look like... well, human joints with skin. It's just part of him and part of his charm, and when I draw him I always draw his joints in, down to the little places where I can see his elastic.

I don't see any point in being rude when someone else's opinions differ from my own, though-- beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all. Sorry you had to go through that with a friend.

    12. When I first started looking at pics of bjd, I found the joints weird. Not bad weird, just new, wow I've never seen this before, weird. Like the joint they put in the middle of the thigh or when the hands have say three joints per finger. Now though I like the joints, I think they have their own charm :) It's definitely not something I'd argue about with someone if they didn't like them.

    13. I thought they looked weird at first, too, but I didn't pay much mind to it because I thought, "Well, they're dolls!" The dolls wouldn't look good with locked, stiff arms and legs and they would look even weirder with cloth bodies, or cloth over the resin to hide the joints. The ball-joints are fine to me. :3nodding:

(Hahah, I just found that you do have an option of a skin suit to hide the joints! I still think there might be some rolls that would look weird though.)

    14. I like this question. I find the joints to be so interesting, it's seeing the mechanics of the doll and I love it. It's part of having a BJD in the first place, that's what it literally is and I just love the look of it.

    15. I love ball joints, I think they help to shape the aesthetic of the doll. It's what makes em unique!

    16. When I first saw ball jointed dolls I wondered how it was supposed to work, could you only dress them in clothes that covered all the joints? They seemed weird and distracting. Now they're one of the visual aspects of them that I really love. I mostly prefer joints that look smooth and rounded even if it makes them more obvious.

    17. I actually really love them. It's what makes them look doll-like! I'm not sure about the jointed fingers, like many people have said here already, but all the rest are fine.

    18. Well, they wouldn't be called "ball-jointed dolls" if they didn't have ball joints. ;)

I personally adore the joints on almost any dolls. There are some very pronounced or "sharp" looking joints that seem a little odd to me and look weird under clothing, but I personally love the different designs and posing that the joints make. I feel that if BJDs weren't actually BJDs and had different joints, I wouldn't like them nearly as much. I've always been fascinated with the oldschool look of ball joints and even dressed up as a marionette one year for Halloween to show off the jointed designs and seams, as they're beautiful to me.

    19. I like the look of the joints, makes them unique and make them look like the dolls they are with is really cool and unique about them!
I wouldnt say they are beautiful, as some of the joints make photos look awkward at times but its easily covered with clothes hehe :D

    20. I think they add to the appeals to the doll in my opinion, I love their little joins, not to mention they aid in functionality
