Are ball joints ugly?

Sep 30, 2008

    1. I feel as if it really depends on the doll. Some joints are ugly, some are cute. I usually think they're pretty cute and very "doll-like", but on some dolls they can look a little weird. I like knee joints more than elbow joints, I think.

    2. i personally like the look of ball joints, i find it an appealing part of the doll, and always try to find doll bodies that have nice joints for poses. its what make these dolls unique - i know how human joints work, but ball joints are a whole new adventure, and work differently from doll to doll. its part of their character!

    3. I used to hide my dolls' joints as much as possible, trying to make the characters look as realistic as possible - but I stopped doing that eventually. The thing is, I like dolls as dolls. These dolls have joints. It's great. For me, the joints are fully part of the BJD aesthetic, and I love them.

    4. Noooo, I would be so sad to not have the cute little joints! I don't want miniature humans, I'm not interested in perfect realism, I just like the dolls because they are cute and seem to gain personalities by themselves, and part of that is their joints! : ) Without the joints... I don't think I would want the dolls as much.... A lot of the time they are covered in clothing, but to me, with them being much more realistic then other dolls, the joints make them that much more a "doll", and I love that!

I like the joints so much I even have a character that is a BJD, because I love the look so much, makes it fun to paint/draw!

    5. The ball joints is the main appeal for me with bjds. I find them pretty in a "tim Berton" way. I had having my girl flash too much skin, but I love showing off the joints. I am currently making a doll with as many joints as possible (and She will have full movement) but, my girl is normally used for modeling purposes, so they did get in the way sometime. I never thought any bjd hobbiest would dislike them. Well I learnt something.

    6. When I very first saw ball jointed dolls online I must admit I disliked the appearance of the joints :/ Boy has that changed! I love ball joints now, they are some how very aesthetically pleasing to me :)

    7. Well... thats the most important feature I'm taking into consideration when I chose the doll im about to buy
There are companies that make joints of their dolls less visible like Volks Dollfie Dream ones

    8. I honestly don't think they're ugly (if I did, then I wouldn't really be in this hobby in the first place), nor have I encountered anyone who thinks of it as such. If anything, I'd think bendable silicone limbs are more unappealing than ball joints since their proportion tend to look um. Skewed? If that's the right word.

    9. I really admire the combination of engineering and aesthetics that goes into making both a practical and naturally-posing joint, so in that way, I actually like joints.

My favorites are double joints with floating elbows/knees, thigh joints which allow curling into a ball, and underbust joints (as opposed to those below the ribcage).

Aesthetically, I hate hidden peanut joints, but I can be persuaded if they are done very well (Limhwa and Supiadoll impressed me in this regard).

    11. I think they're kind of cute. I personally have never see any ball joints and thought to myself "eww" lol that just seems silly. What an odd thing for people to notice anyhow though. I would be more focused on the dolls face, and makeup, and clothing, and hair, I wouldn't even think to look at their knees and judge them haha. I guess its just never something that even crossed my mind as being unpleasant. :)

    12. personally i love the ball joints specially the round ones i feel like without the joints they may look a bit too realistic in my opinion

    13. I'm more concerned with how a doll poses than how its joints look. But I generally like the joints themselves. I like machines and robots, and maybe ball joints kind of remind me of those.

    14. Before I got my first bjd I really disliked the joints. But I fell in love with my first doll's face and decided I'd try to overlook them. But now I actually really like the joints and don't find them ugly at all.

    15. I never found the idea of ball joints a turn off because to me they are kind of what define BJDs. They are what BJDs are and I love them for it! Granted, the joints sometimes are a bit too glaringly obvious or stand out too much in certain poses (like when they bend their knees/arms) especially if they have aesthetically unappealing joints; a few of the designs just look plain weird to me to be honest. However, I have seen some with joints really beautifully done that they almost look "natural" especially in standing poses, which is the pose my dolls mostly pose in anyway LOL.

    16. If bjds have seamless joints, I think people might start to think they're recasts or totally off-topic! :dance

I guess if outsiders mind it too much, just stick with barbie dolls then? oh wait, not everybody is as thin as barbie, yeah? how realistic is that? :wiggle

    17. I actually like the joints. I like dolls and I would like my dolls to look like dolls instead of realistic miniature humans.

    18. Some of the joints can be, well, ugly--brick knees on double jointed dolls for example. Why not round out the middle peanut part for heaven's sake! I will never get that. And the jointed hands remind me of crabs legs. But--joints don't bother me that much. I love the poseablity of bjd's and that's how it happens.

    19. I love the joints, even boxy double joints. I like showing joints in my photos; it's just so interesting to me how they work, and seeing that in photos is really cool to me. I guess they can be kind of annoying under clothing, like how my DZ boy's thigh joints like spinning around when he's wearing pants, but that doesn't really have anything to do with aesthetics.

I suppose to an outsider that doesn't like joints, my KDF boy Aelic would be more aesthetically pleasing than Ilya, my DZ boy. Ilya has double jointed knees, and though they're not the boxiest I've ever seen by far, they're not exactly natural looking. (Plus he's just kind of gangly looking anyway.) Aelic had single jointed knees that just look a little more realistic, but I have a bit of a grudge against them because of the limited poseability. The more joints the better! The mechanics are just so cool. They look cool. So...yeah. Basically, I love ball joints.

    20. Not really ugly but I think some styles of joints look much better than others. I have my fair share of single-piece torso and single jointed dolls for their beauty but after a while, my eyes just mostly ignore the joints because I also love posing double jointed dolls. I didn't realize how much I just expect to see the joints until I was looking at a photo where the doll owner photoshopped out the joints and seams and it made me go :nowords:, then laugh at myself.
