Are ball joints ugly?

Sep 30, 2008

    1. They’re a part of why I love these dolls in particular. I think if they had some sort of weird skin to cover up the joints I wouldn’t find them as appealing. They’re dolls, I want them to look like dolls.

    2. What are the nicest bjd bodies? or ones with nicer looking joints? knee, hand and elbow/arm joints are usually the ones i might not like and it really depends on who makes them that determines if i like them or not.

    3. I personally love the look of ball joints, but imo fairyland and dollzone have very smooth, flush jointing that look nice bent as well! Some companies' double-jointed bodies have very square elbows/knees when bent which I'm definitely not a fan of.

    4. Thanks for trying to help, but doll zone actually has bodies I'm not a fan of. Especially with the way they do their knees, I just don't like how they look when they are bent.

    5. BJDs are interesting because they come really close to entering the Uncanny Valley...but the joints themselves prevent it. Period. It's inherent. They are what they are, and no company makes them in a way that truly mimics a human's. If you don't like the joints, you will probably never fully love these dolls.

    6. While I can understand the point of view that some people would like their dolls to be as realistic as possible, with as little joint visibility as possible, I love ball joints! That "19th century" look is exactly what draws me to BJD over more realistic looking dolls. They just add to that whole.. feel, yanno?

    7. I actually like these dolls because of the visible joints! It bugs me when some makers try to hide them with weird constructions that don't work.

    8. Well, I also love the ball joints and enjoy the antique look it gives to my dolls. There are some people who edit their photos to smoothen out the look of the joints and while I see where they're coming from, it makes the dolls look less appealing to me. I like my bjds because they look like dolls so their joints are very important for the aesthetic.

    9. I don't mind the joints showing, in general, but there are some types of joints that I just don't like. The Doll Chateau dolls that have extra joints in their wrists, ankles, and necks just look creepy to me. That's more something that would prevent me from getting a doll from that company than something that affects whether I try to disguise the joints with clothing or photo manipulation though.

    10. Oddly enough, I actually like doll chateaus bodies, but not doll zones and other certain sellers. It's not just the looks of doll chateaus joints either, their looks body-wise go really well with horror or gothic themes which are themes I'm interested in doing. So i guess I'm looking for companies that have bodies/joints similar to doll chateaus.

    11. I love bjd for tgeir joints too <3 Still, I prefer single jointed dolls. Peanuts are not ball joints for me :D I also love non-jointed torsos as long as the doll poses well overall. The add this vintage feel to it ;)

    12. I am only not a fan of visible slits on thighs (the reason I own an Iple even though her elbows are a nightmare to pose), or the thigh slits that reveals another joint when the leg is bent upwards (sorry don't know the word) but otherwise I don't mind any joints. Although I do admit the Iple hand ring system is cool. However I do not have any actual ball joints in my doll family, they all have theirs in peanut shapes. But that is more due to realism, peanut shaped joints give a more seamless figure in my opinion. To me poseability matters the most, and my dolls wear clothes most of the time anyway. Joints are a part of them being BJDs.

    13. I don't usually mind the look of joints at all, but there have been exceptions. I've had dolls whose knees were so angular that they obviously looked like something was wrong even through pants. And double joint "peanuts" that are so long they make the limb look weirdly stretched when bent don't appeal to me either. Thigh-slits and mobility-joints have never bothered me, but then my characters aren't the sort to sit around in their underwear, so...

    14. I'm very picky on how joints look when picking out a BJD body. I love the concept of dolls that can pose well, especially if they can bend their knees, but I dislike the cost of how the joints look that comes with that functionality. For example, dolls that can completely bend their knees tend to have that peanut, pill-shaped knee joint that is very visible when fully folded, and I very much dislike that look. I have seen some BJD designs getting around this by adding some form of a kneecap cover, which I do like. I think there are always going to be compromises that have to be made, hopefully there'll be even more creative executions of this in the future!

    15. Honestly, the joints are part of the charm for me. It's one of the things that drew me to these kinds of dolls. I think they look neat and specifically concealing the joints never even occurred to me.

    16. The more I like realism, the more photoshop in my photos. ;) Mostly because of the weird leg's angles and elbows.

    17. I absolutely love the ball joints - especially in the hip. I think it's so beautiful, I think what draws me to BJD so much is the ball-joints. Especially since being exposed to BJD when I was a kid through watching Rozen Maiden, where they have all the joints and it's just so enchanting and pretty.

    18. It’s a matter of personal preference, which is reflected in the companies to some extent - DC is very joint-forward, with aesthetics that accentuate their appearance and fullsets that often leave some of them visible; Fairyland’s joints are certainly visible (that’s part of being a BJD), but much less so, and they tend to have fullsets that cover them. A lot of companies are in between.

Personally, I love the look of ball joints, but I’m not big on super pill-ish double joints. I’d prefer something a bit more natural when bent, even if it’s more visible unbent.

    19. I agree, also theyr proportions are never really exact, even th one of more realistic dolls.
I think that instead of hide them is better "exploit" them, aesteticise them (exactly like Mori thinks about prosthetic arms/legs and I agree with him)

    20. I just looove the joints!! I find them attractive. Especially the knee joints. Someone say that my boy is almost naked, but I don't mind it. I like to see the joints... And he is pretty, ok? It's totally normal that he like to be almost naked, and show his joints.:D
