Are ball joints ugly?

Sep 30, 2008

    1. I like the fact the dolls are made of resin (and than, the visible joints)...
Some joints ARE very ugly...but some are really pretty! u_u~
Sometimes, I'm broasing for doll's bodiens and I found some joints even charming XPP~~

    2. I like how the joints look.. like neo-human. Perfectly round joints are especially beautiful to me.
These dolls may freak some people out, like the superb 3D animation today freaks me out. But they have joints to be different from real people, and that is nice.

Err well dollfie dream bodies have perfectly round joints, however they are not joined as smoothly from limbs to limbs. Think crazy expensive artistian dolls. bjds are a variation of that, Your friend doesn't like them? Tell him to create better dolls.

    3. I have to say that since I posted that...my views have changed...Really, I've not just gotten used to the really round joints...and I no longer simply find them 'cute'. I truly love them now. I find them beautiful now. I don't like looking at dolls without joints now, actually. At least, not as much as the ball jointed ones now. I love all dolls, but BJDs have a beauty and grace all their own that I now find is accentuated by their joints, regardless of the shapes of those joints.

    4. My mother also doesn't like the exposed ball joints on the doll but she appretiates the engineering. I love the visible joints - its sort of classical.

    5. I think they're endearing. Some aren't as pretty as others though.

I think some of the prettiest are from Dollstown. They're so pretty. I like them.

    6. Face and overall body sculpt/lines are the main things for me, then followed by flexibility. Beyond this, everything else is incidental. I don't really "like" like ball joints but they don't bother me either. If there was a pretty doll that was very posable and decently durable yet somehow didn't have ball joints, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

I actually do dislike standard elbow ball joints, but they bother me on a practical basis rather than an aesthetic one--the doll can't touch her face. I far prefer more complex and "ugly" (not-so-smooth lines) double joints here for that reason alone.

    7. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the ball joints. Really love them. It adds to their Dollyness. I don't want a perfect little human. I think the joints are what makes the doll so special and interesting.

      They are beautiful.

    8. I've always been intrigued with ball-jointed dolls since I laid eyes on them. I'm not sure why, but it just clicked as something appealing to me. Now, since I've become more immersed in the world of BJDs, I find dolls, like Barbies, without ball-joints rather dull and unappealing. :/ Oh, and the anime series, Rozen Maiden, definitely has gotten me even more into BJDs. :)

It's all a matter of preference.

    9. I actually prefer the dolls to have joints. I really don't like pictures where the joints have been photoshopped out, even when it's done perfectly. The engineering and flexibility is part of the appeal of BJD's to me. My favorite sculpt is the Minifee A-line body, I think they've got a great balance of poseability and aesthetics. I do prefer to cover the more squared-off double joints of the non-Minifee dolls usually, but appreciate their flexibility enough to still like them and prefer them to single joints in most cases.

Wiring the arms totally eliminates this issue - all my wired single-jointed dolls can touch their faces and hold their arms there, often more steadily than the double-jointed ones can. You have a more open area with the elastic and wire showing at the elbow, but that can be covered the same as a less-attractive doubled joint can.

    10. I really like the joints. I think I always have prefered ball joints on dolls rather than them not having them. I remember when I was little and had a barbie that had ball type joints and I always liked that one better than the others, so it's not really a surprise that I still love ball joints. Having ball joints make the dolls appeal to me more.

    11. i think they are cute

    12. I think it depends on the sculpting to be honest, some of my dolls have very elagently done joints wheras a couple look somewhat odd- or rather, my E.I.D's armour plated butt looks odd!

I like my CP type3 body's arm joints the best though, something about them just makes them nice to swivle and pose.

    13. I like the joints. Sure, I find some joints better than others in the aesthetic department, but generally I think they're darned neat, and I view them as a key feature to these dolls. They ARE ball-jointed dolls after all! :)

    14. I really like the round joints my Dollfie Dream has in her arms, they make her look very 'dolly-like' and that appeals to me. I don't particularly mind the elongated double joints because I like the poseability they offer.

    15. I love the joints. It... suspends the reality, I suppose. When my Chrom arrived, my dad said I should put him in long pants to cover his backward joints, but that just seemed silly to me. I find joints to be a beautiful flaw in our otherwise flawless dolls. I also love seeing the elastic just barely visible within the ball.

...I guess this is why my favorite scene in Rozen Maiden is when Jun is staring at Shinku's ball joints.

    16. I'm definitely in the minority here but yes, I do think they're ugly. My boy's knees look decidedly awful when they're bent. But at the end of the day they make him poseable and I love them for how well they work. I'd much rather these dolls have ugly joints than no/severely limited joints.

And the more I look at the dolls as a whole, the less noticeable the joints get. :)

    17. When I look at the pictures of joints I tend to not like the butt and elbow joint. I would like to see more joints though. I'm not used to seeing them, but I'm sure I'll get over it when I get mine.

    18. They kind of are, but they don't bother me that much, otherwise I wouldn't spend hundreds of dollars on a doll.

    19. When my daughter first showed me BJDs I thought the joints were really unattractive. Now that I've seen a bunch and have ordered my first one, I'm finding I don't even notice the joints anymore!

    20. I like the joints. It actually reminds me a lot of sketching I used to do. I'd draw the joints in as circles and make joints in the torso, hips, etc... long before I ever got into the hobby. So I like them. ^_^
